Oberhausen guide
Oberhausen: Gasometer, CentrO and three boroughs
Neighbourhoods, work, everyday life
Oberhausen lies in the west of the Ruhr area between Duisburg, Mülheim, Essen and Bottrop and combines city life with green spaces such as the Kaisergarten and the Rhine-Herne Canal. The city is divided into the boroughs of Alt-Oberhausen, Sterkrade and Osterfeld with a total of 26 districts. We plan your move to Oberhausen with an eye on the no-parking zone, parking situation and access in each district. We are based in Berlin, which is around 541 km away via the A2.
Whether you are moving in from the surrounding area or moving within the city – we adapt our private move services to your needs. For a long-distance move to Oberhausen, too, we are ready with furniture packers. We quote the fixed price after the survey, and your belongings are covered by liability under the HGB; on request we take care of dismantling and assembling the furniture. The route from Berlin is described on our page Long-distance move Berlin – Oberhausen.

No-parking zone, access, date
Oberhausen has three town centres: Alt-Oberhausen with the town hall and Marktstraße, Sterkrade and Osterfeld. Depending on the address, we clarify access, the carrying route and the no-parking zone in advance – for example near the CentrO, where there is a lot of traffic at weekends. Frequently asked questions about living in Oberhausen
Districts of Oberhausen at a glance
Oberhausen is divided into the three boroughs of Alt-Oberhausen, Sterkrade and Osterfeld, with a total of 26 districts. Alt-Oberhausen includes the city centre, the Marienviertel with the Kaisergarten and Schloss Oberhausen, and the Neue Mitte with the Gasometer and the CentrO shopping centre. If you value short distances, you will find shops, restaurants and culture here.
Sterkrade in the north has its own centre and rather quiet residential areas in Schmachtendorf and Königshardt; the borough is well connected via the A2 and A3. Osterfeld in the east has plenty of greenery with the Revierpark Vonderort. Depending on your lifestyle – close to the centre or quieter – there is a district to suit you.
Housing market, employers and quality of life
We deliberately do not give reliable current rent figures here; compare offers on the usual portals. Oberhausen is well connected to the Ruhr area via the A2, A3, A42 and A516 motorways. Major employers include Everllence (formerly MAN, in Sterkrade), OQ Chemicals in Holten, the Katholisches Klinikum Oberhausen, the Horsthemke bakery and the STOAG transport company, plus retail and restaurants around the CentrO.
Oberhausen has no university or university of applied sciences of its own; students commute, for example, to the University of Duisburg-Essen or to the Hochschule Ruhr West in Mülheim and Bottrop. The Fraunhofer Institute UMSICHT carries out research in the city. For leisure there is the Kaisergarten, the Rhine-Herne Canal, the Revierpark Vonderort, the Gasometer with its viewing platform and, at the CentrO, SEA LIFE and the LEGOLAND Discovery Centre.
Moving prices by flat size
Small or large – we have the right offer for every moving requirement. A 1-room flat costs from €339, a 2-room flat from €594. For 3 rooms we charge from €909, for 4 rooms from €1,324. We calculate larger moves to houses or villas individually in order to offer you fair terms. For long-distance moves, a price from €3.80 per kilometre applies. It is best to arrange a free survey straight away.
What the price in Oberhausen depends on
Whether a small move or a large villa – what always matters is the volume, distance (from €3.80/km), floor and lift. A parking restriction zone may also be needed. We are also happy to advise you on furniture assembly and a part load.

Moving to Oberhausen: no-parking zone, parking and the three boroughs
Oberhausen has had its current boundaries since the municipal reorganisation of 1929. According to the city, Sterkrade lies in the north, Osterfeld in the east and Alt-Oberhausen in the south. For your move, the boroughs are more than statistics, because each borough has its own citizens' service office. The city gives figures for all three boroughs (as of the end of 2017):
- Alt-Oberhausen: 22.85 km², around 92,700 inhabitants, including Oberhausen-Mitte (Marienviertel, Brücktorviertel), Styrum, Dümpten, Lirich and Alstaden.
- Sterkrade: 42.14 km² of the city's area of around 77 km², 81,794 inhabitants, with Sterkrade-Mitte, Holten, Königshardt, Schmachtendorf and other localities.
- Osterfeld: around 12.13 km², 38,172 inhabitants, with Osterfeld-Mitte, Eisenheim, Klosterhardt and Vondern.
The borough your new address belongs to also shows you which citizens' service office is near you. During the survey appointment, also ask about access and parking spaces for the removal van.
On parking, the city refers to its parking management scheme with residents' and visitors' parking permits. Under § 45 StVO, a no-parking zone for moving day is ordered by the road traffic authority; we could not verify the lead time and fee on the city's pages and therefore do not state them. How we support the application can be found under Parking restriction zone. More about moves to the city: Moves to Oberhausen.
Re-registering in Oberhausen: citizens' service offices, deadlines and appointments
The city of Oberhausen runs three citizens' service offices (Bürgerservicestellen), one for each borough:
- Alt-Oberhausen: Rathaus Oberhausen, Schwartzstraße 72, 46045 Oberhausen
- Sterkrade: Technisches Rathaus, Bahnhofstraße 66, 46145 Oberhausen
- Osterfeld: Rathaus Osterfeld, Bottroper Straße 183, 46117 Oberhausen
According to the city, opening hours are Monday to Wednesday from 8 am to 4 pm, Thursday from 8 am to 6 pm and Friday from 8 am to 12 noon. Personal visits are only possible by appointment. You book appointments online via the city's service portal; without internet access, you can reach the service line on 0208 825-0.
According to the city, the deadline for registration and changes of address is two weeks after moving in, which corresponds to § 17 (1) BMG. If you move abroad, deregistration is due within two weeks of moving out. Your landlord must confirm the move within 14 days on the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung). So request the document before the move so that you do not have to postpone your appointment.
It is best to schedule your registration appointment in the first week after the move and have your ID and the confirmation ready. How a private move with us works is explained on the services page.
