MOVING FROM BERLIN-MOABIT

New in Gelsenkirchen

Gelsenkirchen: Between the Emscher, the Rhine–Herne Canal and Schalke

– Guide for newcomers

Unsere Firma comes from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and handles the move to Gelsenkirchen; this guide helps you settle in.

Gelsenkirchen lies in the central Ruhr area on the slopes of the Emscher valley, crossed by the Rhine–Herne Canal. In 2022 around 260,000 people lived here. The city is known as the home of FC Schalke 04 and for coal mining, which continued until the turn of the millennium. Today spoil heaps, colliery housing estates and the Nordsternpark on the site of the Nordstern colliery recall that era. Around a tenth of the city area is park and leisure land, and a quarter forest and farmland. If you are new here, you register at one of the four BÜRGERcenters (citizens' centres).

Most of the housing stock was built before 1970, and according to a city survey around 6.4 per cent of flats were vacant in 2024. According to Wikipedia, advertised rents in 2026 were about 7.10 to 7.23 euros per square metre, lower than in Bochum (8.76 euros); the local comparative rent is shown in the rent index (Mietspiegel), valid since January 2026. Work is provided by, among others, the Ruhr Oel refinery, Gelsenwasser and the Knappschaft Kliniken in Buer. We handle the transport from Berlin – around 519 km via the A2 and A42; the route is described on the page Moving Berlin – Gelsenkirchen.

FROM BERLIN

What we take on – and what is up to you

Transport, assembly, access

We have no branch in Gelsenkirchen: the lorry sets off from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and drives around 519 km via the A2 and A42. Beforehand we ask about the floor, lift and access – whether in Buer, Ückendorf or Erle. On request we apply in good time to the responsible authority for the parking restriction zone (Halteverbotszone) outside the new address. We give you the fixed price after the survey; liability is under § 451e HGB (€620 per m³). You register at one of the four BÜRGERcenters yourself – within two weeks, free of charge and by appointment. What comes after registration is shown in our article Change of address: who to inform?.

Packing Service

We pack crockery, books and electronics safely and label every box by destination room – so in Gelsenkirchen you find bedding and the kettle on the first evening.

Furniture assembly

We dismantle beds, wardrobes and shelves in Berlin and reassemble them in Gelsenkirchen; the screws travel with them, labelled, so the first night in your own bed works out.

Storage

If the new flat in Gelsenkirchen is not yet free, we store your furniture in the meantime and deliver on the handover date – handy for a temporary interim solution.

Parking restriction

On request we apply in good time for the parking restriction zone outside your new address in Gelsenkirchen, so that on moving day the lorry can stop right outside the front door.

Arriving
in Gelsenkirchen

Offices, flat, everyday life

Anyone moving to Gelsenkirchen has quite a bit to do in the first few weeks: the appointment at one of the four BÜRGERcenters for registration, the resident parking permit if needed and the bulky waste collection by GELSENDIENSTE. Then there is choosing a borough between Buer in the north and Ückendorf in the south, nursery and school places and the commute by tram, U11 or via the A2, A42 and A52. This guide sums up the most important steps.

Paperwork and deadlines

Registration at one of the four BÜRGERcenters has a deadline: two weeks after moving in. Keep your ID and the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung) to hand and book an appointment early. Your bank, insurers and employer also need your new address in Gelsenkirchen.

Flat and neighbourhood

Take a look at your future neighbourhood – whether Buer, Ückendorf or Erle – once at rush hour, and clarify the floor, lift and access. We also need these details for the fixed price of your move to Gelsenkirchen.

Organising everyday life

Trams, the U11 and around 50 bus lines run on the VRR tariff. GELSENDIENSTE collects bulky waste free of charge, and you apply for the resident parking permit online. Ask the City of Gelsenkirchen early about nursery and school places.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Living in Gelsenkirchen

Registration, neighbourhoods, transport links and moving to Gelsenkirchen – answered briefly.
That depends on your daily life: Buer in the north has its own centre with Schloss Berge nearby, while Erle and Resse in the east are greener. If you want short distances to the main station, look in the Altstadt or Schalke. Ask the city early about nursery and school places; more about the process under home removal. If you commute to Essen every day, look for proximity to the U11 or the main station.

Five Boroughs: How Gelsenkirchen Is Organised

Gelsenkirchen consists of five boroughs. Mitte comprises Altstadt, Bismarck, Bulmke-Hüllen, Feldmark, Heßler, Schalke and Schalke-Nord; Nord includes Buer, Hassel and Scholven, and Ost Erle, Resse and Resser Mark. Süd is made up of Neustadt, Rotthausen and Ückendorf, and West of Beckhausen and Horst. The three boroughs north of the Emscher largely correspond to the former town of Buer, which was merged with Gelsenkirchen in 1928.

South of the Rhine–Herne Canal, the mining past with its colliery housing estates is still clearly visible, while in the north and east there is more greenery and farmland. Schloss Berge lies in Buer, and the Schalke 04 arena in Erle. The local rent is shown in the city's rent index, valid since January 2026.

Work, Study and Leisure in Everyday Gelsenkirchen

The large employers include Ruhr Oel's Gelsenkirchen refinery, with two sites and around 1,800 employees in 2026. Added to these are the water supplier Gelsenwasser, based on Willy-Brandt-Allee, the energy supplier ELE, the Knappschaft Kliniken in Buer and the housing company GGW. In the Rheinelbe Science Park in Ückendorf, research is carried out into solar technology, among other things.

The Westfälische Hochschule, founded in 1992 as a university of applied sciences, offers business, computer science, engineering and journalism; the University of Applied Sciences for Public Administration NRW is also based here. For leisure there are the ZOOM Erlebniswelt zoo, the Nordsternpark, the Musiktheater im Revier and cycle paths along the canal. By car you reach the neighbouring cities via the A2, A42 and A52.

Moving prices by flat size

Whether a small flat or a large house – our prices are fairly calculated. For 1 room we start from €349, for 2 rooms from €605, for 3 rooms from €909 and for 4 rooms from €1,279. For houses and villas you always receive an individual quote, as many factors play a role here. If you are moving further afield, long-distance moves start from €4.20/km. Use our free survey for a personal quote.

What the price depends on

First we determine the volume of your belongings, then the distance, which we charge from €4.20/km. The floor and lift are also included in the calculation, as is a required parking restriction zone. We are happy to add furniture assembly or a shared load to your move.

Services for Your Move to Gelsenkirchen

We offer you a complete all-round service for every type of move.

From Berlin to Gelsenkirchen – and Back

We come from Berlin-Moabit; Gelsenkirchen is around 519 km away via the A2 and A42, and the lorry takes about 7.5 hours including a break. The route is described on the page Moving Berlin – Gelsenkirchen, other destinations in the locations overview. The return trip to Berlin is also possible.

Registration in Gelsenkirchen: BÜRGERcenters, Documents and Deadline

Under § 17 of the Federal Registration Act (Bundesmeldegesetz), you must register within two weeks of moving in. In Gelsenkirchen, according to the city, this is handled by the four BÜRGERcenters: Cranger Straße 262, Hans-Sachs-Haus, Rathaus Buer and Vorburg Schloss Horst. The service is by appointment only, which you book on 0209 169-2100 or online. The city points out that appointments may be later because of staff shortages; in that case no fine is imposed for the missed deadline. Registration is free of charge, and according to the city, moves within Germany can also be registered online.

You must bring the completed landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung) signed by the landlord, listing all persons to be registered, as well as an ID card or passport for each person. A form is available to download on the city's website. Under § 19 of the Federal Registration Act, the confirmation states the name and address of the landlord, the moving-in date, the address of the flat and the names of the persons required to register.

If only one parent registers the children, a declaration of consent from the other parent may be required. EU citizens moving here from another EU country must, according to the city, use the EUROPAcenter instead and book a separate appointment for it. If you are represented, you need a power of attorney, the representative's ID and the set of forms. For moving day you can plan a parking restriction zone.

Gelsenkirchen: Resident Parking Permit and Bulky Waste Collection

For resident parking, the City of Gelsenkirchen issues resident parking permits. According to the city, the requirements are that you live in the resident parking area, that the vehicle is registered in your name and that you have no garage or private parking space within a radius of 200 m. A permit is valid for one number plate. It costs 30 euros for one year (10.20 euros with an electric vehicle plate) and 60 euros for two years; a change or duplicate costs 6 euros. You apply online and need your ID card, vehicle registration certificate and, if applicable, a keeper's confirmation.

For bulky waste, GELSENDIENSTE offers a collection service for bulky waste and large electrical appliances. It works only by appointment: via the online form, by phone on 0209 954-4777 or by e-mail to [email protected], Monday to Friday from 8 am to 6 pm. According to the city, it is free of charge for private households. Bulky waste and large electrical appliances are collected separately, and each type needs its own appointment.

Put the items out no earlier than 12 noon the day before and no later than 6 am on the collection day, close to the kerb, without blocking the pavement or road. Collection from private property such as front gardens and courtyards is not possible. For the recycling centres, the city shows a map of the locations on its waste page.
