Saarbrücken is the state capital and the largest and only major city in the Saarland – and the only German state capital directly on the border, here with the French département of Moselle. A move from Berlin to Saarbrücken often has to do with a job at the state government, authorities or companies, with studies at Saarland University, founded in 1948, or with the closeness to France. The route to Saarbrücken: 722 km to the city motorway
If you are thinking of Nuremberg and Mannheim, you are wrong: from the Berlin ring road the lorry takes the A9 to the Hermsdorf interchange, switches to the A4 right across Thuringia and follows the A5 into the Frankfurt area. Near Mainz it crosses the Rhine onto the A63, which joins the A6 near Kaiserslautern. This runs past Homburg and St. Ingbert, over several valley bridges to the Saarbrücken interchange; the A620 city motorway leads the last 4 km or so along the river into the centre – around 722 km in total.
Lorries over 3.5 t may drive at no more than 80 km/h, so almost ten hours of pure driving time add up – more than EU Regulation 561/2006 allows one driver per day. We calculate approx. 11 hrs including the break and use two drivers or stay overnight on the way. In Saarbrücken we unload and set up the furniture. The way back from Saarbrücken to Berlin follows the same route.
Getting to know Saarbrücken: districts, riverbank, access
Saarbrücken was formed in 1909 from the towns of Saarbrücken, St. Johann and Malstatt-Burbach and today is divided into four city districts: Mitte with Alt-Saarbrücken, Malstatt, St. Johann, Eschberg and St. Arnual, West with Burbach and Altenkessel, Dudweiler and Halberg. Its landmark is the baroque Ludwigskirche. Important for the lorry: the A620 city motorway runs directly along the Saar and is flooded during high water – then we plan the approach to your address differently.
The old town around the St. Johanner Markt links the Old Bridge of 1546/47 with the Schlossplatz on the other bank; lanes and the pedestrian zone are narrow there, so we clarify the parking space early. If you later move back to Berlin, we apply for the parking restriction in front of the new address at the district office and plan the drive in just the same way.
