Saarbrücken: St. Johann Dudweiler, Malstatt – where to live?

Saarbrücken guide
Saarbrücken: state capital on the French border
Districts, housing, daily life
Saarbrücken is the state capital of Saarland and borders directly on the French département of Moselle. The city was formed in 1909 from Saarbrücken, St. Johann and Malstatt-Burbach and today has around 183,000 inhabitants. With Saarland University (Universität des Saarlandes), the German Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) and two Max Planck Institutes, Saarbrücken is a centre of science. The Saarbahn runs as a tram-train to Sarreguemines in France, and from the main station there are ICE and TGV services to Paris. For your move this means: in the city centre, no-stopping zones and residents' parking matter; in the outer districts it is more about hillside locations and the floor.
We come from Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and handle moves to Saarbrücken – from St. Johann to Dudweiler. Our team takes care of your home move, covered under the German Commercial Code (HGB), and plans no-stopping zones and access routes. Packing, transport and furniture assembly come from a single source. We quote the fixed price after the survey, with no additional charges. For the route from Berlin, read more under Berlin – Saarbrücken; further destinations under Long-distance moves.

What we clarify before moving day in Saarbrücken
No-stopping zone, hillside, date
A move to Saarbrücken raises its own questions: old buildings in Alt-Saarbrücken and St. Johann, hillside locations in many districts and residents' parking zones in the city centre. You apply for the no-stopping zone (Haltverbotszone) at the public order office (Ordnungsamt), and according to the form the signs must be up at least four days beforehand. We plan access, signs and the date with you and coordinate moving in with your property management. Your belongings are covered under the HGB (€620 per m³), and the fixed price applies after the survey – whether you are moving within Saarbrücken or from Berlin.

Frequently asked questions about living in Saarbrücken
Four boroughs, 20 districts: where to live in Saarbrücken?
Saarbrücken is divided into four boroughs (Stadtbezirke). Mitte includes St. Johann with St. Johanner Markt and short distances, Alt-Saarbrücken around the palace, Malstatt, Eschberg and St. Arnual. The Dudweiler borough, with its own borough administration, also includes Jägersfreude, Herrensohr and Scheidt.
The West borough comprises Burbach, Klarenthal, Gersweiler and Altenkessel, easy to reach via the Saarbahn and the A620. The Halberg borough in the south-east includes Brebach-Fechingen, Güdingen, Bübingen, Ensheim with the airport and other rather rural districts. For your move this means: in Mitte, the no-stopping zone and parking zone matter; on the edge of town it is more about hillsides, stairs and carrying distance.
Employers, quality of life and transport links
Saarbrücken lives from research, administration and industry: besides Saarland University, important employers include the DFKI, the Max Planck Institutes for Informatics and for Software Systems and the Fraunhofer IZFP. ZF builds automatic transmissions at its Saarbrücken plant, CosmosDirekt is Germany's largest direct insurer, and there are also the Landesbank Saar and state authorities. The proximity to France shapes the food, culture and language.
The A1 and A6 motorways begin in Saarbrücken, and the A620 runs along the Saar as an urban motorway. The main station has ICE and TGV connections to Frankfurt and Paris, and the Saarbahn runs to Sarreguemines. It is around 722 km from Berlin; we come from Berlin and also handle company relocations to the region.

From Berlin to the Saar – and right across Germany
We come from Berlin and handle moves throughout Germany, from the Spree to the Saar. Especially on long routes such as Berlin – Saarbrücken, it pays to plan the date and no-stopping zone early. Destinations with their own page can be found in the locations overview, and long routes under Long-distance moves.
No-stopping zone for your move in Saarbrücken: public order office, form and signs four days ahead
In Saarbrücken you apply for a no-stopping zone for your move at the public order office (Ordnungsamt), road traffic section, Großherzog-Friedrich-Straße 111, 66121 Saarbrücken. On its “Was erledige ich wo?” (what do I do where?) page, the city asks you to arrange an appointment in advance by phone or email; you can reach the public order office on +49 681 905-0 or at [email protected]. The form is called “Antrag auf Einrichtung einer Haltverbotszone wegen Umzug/Veranstaltung/Anlieferung” (application for a no-stopping zone for a move, event or delivery).
The form (as of July 2024) asks for:
- the applicant with address, telephone and email
- date, time from/to, and location, street and house number
- the existing parking regulation, such as residents' parking, short-stay parking, loading zone, free parking or an absolute no-stopping restriction
- whether you collect the permit at the cash desk or have it sent to you
Important: according to a note on the form, the no-stopping signs must be up at least four days beforehand. For putting them up, the city refers you to traffic safety companies from the region. The city page we checked does not state a deadline for the application or a fee, so ask about both when making the appointment. As the form only asks for one location, submit a separate application for the moving-out and moving-in addresses and state the existing parking regulation precisely. We support you with the planning; see Parking restriction zone and the guide Applying for a parking restriction zone.
Registration, citizens' office and residents' parking in Saarbrücken after moving in
In Saarbrücken the deadline for registering, changing or cancelling your registration is two weeks after moving in; registration is only possible from the actual day you move in. You need the original ID card or passport for each person and a landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung); the tenancy agreement alone is not enough. Your landlord confirms the form; do not send it to the citizens' office in advance. Registration is free of charge, including for moves within the city.
There are citizens' offices in City, Dudweiler, Halberg and West. According to the city, you can register with BundID without an appointment or book an appointment at the virtual citizens' office; information is available on 115 or +49 681 9050.
If you have a car, you should also check residents' parking. According to the city, a new permit or renewal costs 30.70 euros for one year or 23 euros for half a year, and a change of parking zone after the move 10.20 euros. The requirements are a main residence in a designated residents' parking zone and a vehicle registered to you or permanently made available to you; there is no entitlement to a specific parking space. The point of contact is the City citizens' office, Gerberstraße 4, except on Wednesdays by appointment. How we plan moves to Saarbrücken from Berlin is explained under Moves in Saarbrücken; for longer routes to Saarbrücken, Long-distance move can help.
