Lutherstadt Wittenberg: 110 km to the Castle Church and the banks of the Elbe

A move from Berlin to Lutherstadt Wittenberg leads to a district town with around 45,000 inhabitants whose centre lies on the north bank of the Elbe. The Luther House, the Melanchthon House, the Castle Church and the Town Church of St. Mary have been part of the UNESCO World Heritage site “Luther Memorials in Eisleben and Wittenberg” since 1996. Work is also a factor: the nitrogen works in Piesteritz and the Agro-Chemie Park on the industrial site are among the town's most important employers. Families often look for more space than they can find in inner-city Berlin.

Conversely, many decide on the move from Lutherstadt Wittenberg to Berlin – for studies, a new job or life in the big city. Via the A9 it is only around an hour and a half by lorry, so the connection stays short after the move too. From Stromstraße 21 in Moabit to Lutherstadt Wittenberg it is around 110 kilometres. The lorry takes the A100 and the AVUS (A115) onto the southern Berlin ring road (A10), joins the A9 at the Potsdam interchange and follows it for around 41 km. Wittenberg has three A9 junctions – Klein Marzehns, Köselitz and Coswig (Anhalt); we drive the last section on country roads into the town, where the B 2 and B 187 cross. At 80 km/h, the limit for lorries over 3.5 t on the motorway, it is approx. 1.5 hrs of driving – no mandatory break is required.

In Lutherstadt Wittenberg the old town lies around the spacious market square; the Luther House and the Melanchthon House stand on Collegienstraße. In Piesteritz stands the workers' estate built from 1916 to 1919 for employees of the nitrogen works: it is considered the largest car-free housing estate in Germany and has been a listed monument since 1986. Volume comes first. At 110 km the distance is short (from €4/km), but the effort can increase at the destination: in the car-free workers' estate in Piesteritz and in old-town streets around the market, carrying distances get longer. Floor, lift, furniture assembly and a parking zone are added; for single items a part load is worthwhile.
