Moving from Berlin to Solothurn (Switzerland) – and back

Anyone moving from Berlin to Solothurn is transferring their residence to Switzerland. Household goods that you have used for at least six months and will continue to use there can be imported free of duty as removal goods – declared with the signed form 18.44, an inventory list and proof such as an employment or tenancy agreement. The return move from Solothurn to Berlin works the other way round: for export you present an inventory list with your addresses to the Swiss customs office, and in Germany you declare the removal goods to customs. On loading day we pack and secure your household goods in Berlin; two drivers take turns, or we stop overnight before the border and declare the removal goods on the next working day. After arriving in Solothurn we unload and, on request, reassemble the furniture. On the return move from Solothurn to Berlin we go back the same way.

Solothurn is the capital of the canton of the same name and is divided by the Aare into a northern and a southern part: to the north the old town around St. Ursus Cathedral, which because of its baroque buildings is sometimes called "the most beautiful baroque town in Switzerland", to the south the Vorstadt. The city has grown together almost seamlessly with Bellach, Langendorf, Feldbrunnen-St. Niklaus and Zuchwil, but these are separate municipalities. After moving in, you register within 14 days with the residents' registration office of your municipality, as required by the canton of Solothurn.

On a return move to Berlin you also deregister in Solothurn within 14 days and register in Berlin within two weeks at the citizens' office. We apply for the parking restriction at the Berlin address at the district office's road traffic authority, and the signs are up 72 hours beforehand.
