On the way, driving times count: at around 1113 km, two drivers take turns or we include an overnight stay, and we plan the border crossing for a working day, because removal goods are only cleared during the opening hours of the customs offices for commercial goods. Anyone moving from Berlin to Sion is moving to the capital of the canton of Valais. The city lies on both sides of the Rhone, about 70% of its inhabitants are native French speakers, and around Sion lies one of the largest wine-growing areas in Switzerland. For the move, the border matters most: household goods you have used for at least six months and will continue to use enter the country free of duty as removal goods – with a signed form 18.44, an inventory list and proof of the change of residence. We take care of packing, transport and furniture assembly right into the new flat.
If you return from Sion to Berlin, the border has to be crossed from the other side: on export the Swiss customs office receives your household list with both addresses, and you declare the removal goods to German customs. We give you the fixed price for this after the survey as well; liability is under the HGB, and optional additional insurance is possible.
Route and schedule: around 1113 km via Bern and Vevey
The journey starts in Moabit on the A100 and the AVUS (A115); via the Berlin ring road (A10) we join the A9 to the Hermsdorfer Kreuz, take the A4 past Erfurt and, via the Kirchheim and Hattenbach junctions, the A5 to Basel. In Switzerland we drive on the A2 to Härkingen, the A1 to Bern and the A12 via Fribourg and Bulle to above Vevey. The A9 then leads past Montreux and Martigny through the Rhone Valley to Sion. In total that is around 1113 km and approx. 17 h by lorry including breaks – so two drivers or two days.
Lorries over 3.5 t may drive at a maximum of 80 km/h on German motorways (§ 18 para. 5 StVO); after 4.5 hours at the wheel a 45-minute break is mandatory. Customs clearance takes place on a working day, and at night from 10 pm to 5 am lorries over 3.5 t do not drive in Switzerland. On a return move the same route applies in the opposite direction.
Beneath Valère and Tourbillon: arriving in Sion
Two hills rise above Sion's old town: Valère with the fortified church of Notre-Dame de Valère and Tourbillon with the ruins of the bishop's castle. Whether your new flat is in the centre, in Champsec, in Bramois (incorporated in 1968) or in Salins south of the Rhone (added in 2013): we need the address early to check access, parking space for the lorry, floor and carrying distances. After moving in, you register with the municipality's residents' registration office (Einwohnerkontrolle); the municipality tells you the deadline and documents, and the canton of Valais issues the residence permit.
Back in Berlin you register within two weeks at the citizens' office (Bürgeramt), with ID and the landlord's confirmation. We apply for the parking restriction outside the Berlin door at the district office; the signs are up at least three full days beforehand. If the Berlin flat is not yet ready to move into, we put your furniture into interim storage.
