Moving Berlin–Thun: 985 km to the gateway to the Bernese Oberland

Removal company Berlin
From Moabit to Lake Thun and back
Move without stress
Thun is regarded as the gateway to the Bernese Oberland: here the Aare flows out of Lake Thun, and the castle and town church stand above the old town. A move from Berlin to Thun therefore crosses a customs border – Switzerland is not part of the EU customs union, and your furniture travels as removal goods (Übersiedlungsgut). We at Beste Umzug start in Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21), look at your flat, estimate the volume in cubic metres and fix the price in writing before the lorry sets off on the 985 kilometres.
To Thun there are approx. 14.5 hrs of lorry driving ahead – more than a single driver may drive in one day under EU Regulation 561/2006. So two drivers take turns, or the team stays overnight before Basel; in Switzerland lorries over 3.5 t are off the road between 10 pm and 5 am anyway. After the survey, the guide price from €3,660 becomes a fixed price including packing, the drive, customs clearance and the LSVA (Swiss heavy vehicle charge) for around 120 Swiss kilometres. Liability: HGB, § 451e. We take the same route for a return move from Thun to Berlin.

Thun
checklist: customs and access
Before the move to Thun we clarify what the border requires: inventory list, form 18.44 and proof of the new residence, such as the tenancy agreement. In Berlin we apply for the parking restriction at the district office, for Thun we check access and parking area – the Bälliz has been a pedestrian zone since 1988. Dismantling, assembly and storage in case of gaps between dates are included. Within 14 days of arriving you register with the residents' services (Einwohnerdienste) of the City of Thun, and you choose a Swiss health insurer within three months. That is how the move to Switzerland succeeds, and later the way back.

What Swiss customs wants to see before Thun
With the move from Berlin to Thun you leave the EU customs union. Your household goods nevertheless remain duty-free, provided you have used them yourself for at least six months and continue to use them in Thun – the Federal Office for Customs and Border Security (BAZG) calls this removal goods (Übersiedlungsgut). For this you fill in and sign form 18.44, attach an inventory list on which furniture, large appliances and valuables appear individually, and prove the change of residence, for example with the Thun tenancy agreement or an employment contract. Clearance is only possible while the customs office for commercial goods is open, usually on working days. We collect everything in Berlin and bring it into your new flat, including assembly and unpacking on request.
If you later move from Thun back to Berlin, Swiss export again requires an inventory list, this time with the old and new address. The removal goods enter the EU duty-free under Regulation (EC) 1186/2009 if you have lived outside the EU for at least twelve months and used the items for six months; German customs is then responsible. For this direction, too, we fix the fixed price in writing after a survey.
985 km: A9, A4, A5 – then the Belchen Tunnel, Wankdorf, A6
The lorry leaves Moabit via the AVUS, takes the Berlin ring road and drives south on the A9 to the Hermsdorf interchange. There it switches to the A4, past Erfurt and Eisenach, and via the Kirchheim and Hattenbach junctions onto the A5, which leads past Frankfurt, Karlsruhe and Freiburg to Weil am Rhein. After Basel the Swiss A2 takes over with the Belchen Tunnel to Härkingen, then the A1 to the Wankdorf junction in Bern and finally the A6, to which Thun has been connected since 1971 with the Thun Nord and Thun Süd exits. Around 985 km in total, approx. 14.5 hrs of lorry driving with breaks.
On German motorways lorries over 3.5 t drive at a maximum of 80 km/h (§ 18 (5) StVO), and after 4.5 hours at the wheel a 45-minute break is mandatory. Because the route exceeds the daily driving time, two drivers take turns or the team stays overnight on this side of the border and has the goods cleared on the next working day. On the return move we drive the same line in the opposite direction.
Schlossberg, Bälliz, Gwatt: how the lorry arrives
Thun is the main town of the administrative district of Thun in the canton of Bern. The old town lies on the Aare around one and a half kilometres from the lake: the Schlossberg with the castle and town church, the lower town, the Obere Hauptgasse with its raised pavements and the Bälliz, an island in the Aare, a pedestrian zone since 1988 and a market on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Newer neighbourhoods such as Dürrenast, Neufeld, the Westquartier or Gwatt lie on the flat alluvial plain of the Kander, whereas Goldiwil is on the slope. Depending on the address, we plan a furniture lift, short carrying distances or a date away from market days.
After moving in you have 14 days to register with the residents' services of the City of Thun; as an EU citizen with a passport or identity card, and the fee follows the cantonal tariff. On a return move to Berlin: registration at the Bürgeramt within two weeks with the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung); we apply for the parking restriction at the district office, and the signs are up 72 hours beforehand.

Five levers for the price to Thun
The volume in cubic metres counts most. For Thun there are also the 985 km, the LSVA for the Swiss section, customs clearance and the choice between a second driver and an overnight stop. Floor, lift and extras such as furniture assembly or a parking restriction zone in Berlin are also factored in. Anyone taking little with them gets away more cheaply with a part load.
