From Moabit we drive via the AVUS and A10 onto the A9 to the Hermsdorfer Kreuz interchange and on the A4 past Jena, Erfurt and Eisenach. Via the Kirchheim and Hattenbach interchanges we join the A5, which takes us via the Frankfurter Kreuz, the Darmstädter Kreuz and the Karlsruhe interchange, past Offenburg and Lahr to Freiburg; depending on the district we take Freiburg-Nord, -Mitte or -Süd. Altogether around 810 km, approx. 12.5 hrs lorry driving time including breaks.
Lorries over 3.5 t may drive at no more than 80 km/h on the motorway (§ 18 (5) StVO), and after four and a half hours of driving time a 45-minute break is mandatory. Because the route exceeds any daily driving time, two drivers take turns or we stay overnight on the way; we decide this at the survey. For the return move the same route applies in the opposite direction.
Arriving in Freiburg: districts, access, registration
Freiburg im Breisgau is the fourth-largest city in Baden-Württemberg and Germany's southernmost city. It lies on the south-eastern edge of the Upper Rhine Graben and at the western foot of the Black Forest, with the Dreisam flowing through the city. At the heart of the old town, which covers around one square kilometre, are the Minster and the Bächle (small water channels); the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität has existed since 1457. The city has 28 districts, including Wiehre, Herdern, Stühlinger, Haslach, Littenweiler, Rieselfeld and Vauban on the site of a former barracks. After moving in, you register with the registration authority in Freiburg within two weeks, with your ID and the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung).
