From Berlin to the Breisgau
Moving to Freiburg im Breisgau: districts, Vauban and registration
Guide
Freiburg im Breisgau lies on the western edge of the Black Forest on the Dreisam and has around 238,000 inhabitants. The city is considered one of the warmest in Germany; the Kaiserstuhl and the Rhine plain are not far away. People planning a move to Freiburg often come here for the university, the university hospital or the quality of life. For your private move we clarify access and parking in advance, whether you are heading to Wiehre, Vauban or Rieselfeld.
Freiburg is growing, housing is in demand, and the 28 districts differ greatly in character and access. We come from Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive around 810 km with two drivers or an overnight stop; we quote the fixed-price move after the survey, including the parking ban zone. Whether it is a small flat in Stühlinger or a house in Herdern – we ask about the floor and carrying routes in advance. The route is described on the page Moving Berlin – Freiburg im Breisgau.

What we handle when you move to Freiburg
Planning from Berlin, arrival in the Breisgau
We have no branch in Freiburg; instead we drive our lorry from Berlin-Moabit. That is why we clarify the particularities of your district in advance – from low-traffic Vauban, where the van may only enter the residential street for loading and unloading, to the new build with a lift in Rieselfeld. We apply for the parking ban zone in line with the city's deadlines; the signs are set up by a specialist company, because the city does not provide any. For old buildings in Wiehre or Herdern we check the staircase and furniture lift. We quote the fixed price after the survey; we are liable for your belongings under § 451e HGB. Places with their own pages can be found under Locations.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Freiburg im Breisgau
Districts in Freiburg im Breisgau at a glance
Freiburg is divided into 28 districts, each with its own character. Wiehre, with its late-19th-century villas, is considered a sought-after residential area; Vauban was built on the site of a barracks that the French armed forces left in 1992 and is today a low-traffic neighbourhood. Families appreciate quiet Herdern on the hillside, while students often move to central Stühlinger near the main station or to Littenweiler in the east.
Rieselfeld in the west is a newer district, and Weingarten a large housing estate with high-rise blocks. Haslach, Zähringen and Betzenhausen are also popular residential areas with tram connections; with Dietenbach, a new district is under construction. Whichever district it is – our private moving service plans access and floor in advance.
Housing market, employers and quality of life
The Freiburg housing market is tight; we do not give specific rents, because they depend heavily on location and condition. Many people are drawn here nonetheless: the University of Freiburg (Albert-Ludwigs-Universität), founded in 1457, the Freiburg University Hospital as one of the region's major employers, and research institutions such as the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems provide jobs.
Freiburg scores with short distances thanks to its cycling infrastructure, a dense VAG tram network and its proximity to the Black Forest and Kaiserstuhl. Basel lies around 50 km to the south, Strasbourg around 66 km to the north (as the crow flies); the French border on the Rhine is only a few kilometres away. This mix makes the city one of the most sought-after moving destinations in the south-west.
A fair price for your move
Fair and transparent prices are important to us. That is why our quotes for a 1-room flat start at just €359. For 2 rooms the price is €609, for 3 rooms €884 and for 4 rooms €1,329. For a house or villa we prepare an individual quote, and for long-distance moves we charge from €4.20/km. Arrange a free survey to receive your personal quote.
These criteria determine the price
The price depends primarily on volume and distance – the latter is charged from €4.20/km. Floor and lift also affect the effort involved. Additional services such as furniture assembly and part load can be booked.

Applying for a parking ban zone for your move in Freiburg im Breisgau
In Freiburg im Breisgau, you apply for a parking ban zone for your move to the city's traffic authority. According to the city, the application is made via an online form, and no documents are required. The city states these rules:
- Deadline: the application must be submitted at least two weeks before the date.
- Earliest point: the traffic order is issued no earlier than six weeks before the date.
- Signs: the parking ban signs must be set up four days before the move, and by a specialist company. The city does not provide signs.
- Fee: under the GebOSt fee regulations, 30 euros per day for private individuals and 50 euros per day for commercial applicants.
Important on moving day: if vehicles are still parked in the area despite the signs, the city says they can be towed away, with the costs borne by the vehicle owner. We therefore check the evening before whether the zone is clear, and take care of the application and signage. Because the order is only issued from six weeks before the date, we set the time of application to suit your moving day.
Anyone moving into the pedestrian zone needs, according to the city, a separate exemption permit for parking. Read more about the service under Parking restriction zone. We have put together another guide focusing on the old town and old buildings under Moving to Freiburg.
Access in Vauban and registration in Freiburg
According to the city of Freiburg, the Vauban district is "low-traffic" (autoreduziert). The residential streets next to Vaubanallee are built as traffic-calmed streets. According to the city, they may be driven on for loading and unloading, but there are no public parking spaces there. For us this means: the removal van stands in the residential street while loading, and must then leave. We plan the loading routes accordingly. According to the city, residents with a car rent or buy a space in one of the two neighbourhood car parks with around 470 spaces in total, and for visitors there are about 200 public spaces along the 30 km/h routes.
After moving in, you register in Freiburg within two weeks. The city lists:
- registration in person at the registration authority with an appointment booked via freiburg.de/termine
- digital registration via wohnsitzanmeldung.gov.de, where available, with an ID card with online function and the AusweisApp2
- to bring: identity documents and the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung)
- costs: none, you receive a free registration certificate
Anyone registering family members at the same time also brings their ID. According to the city, children without a child passport need their birth certificate.
For registration, the same applies as for all authorities: book your appointment early. Further local guidance is provided in the guide Living in Freiburg im Breisgau. We discuss access and the loading route during the free survey.
