Moving to Mannheim: costs process & districts

From Berlin to Mannheim
Moving to Mannheim – to the city of squares on the Rhine and Neckar
Guide
A move to Mannheim takes you to the second-largest city in Baden-Württemberg: around 320,000 people live where the Neckar flows into the Rhine. The city centre did not grow organically but was planned around 1600 – instead of street names, the “Quadrate” (squares) have letters and numbers. Residents' parking zones apply there, and the parking restriction for moving day needs lead time. We plan your home move or company relocation at a fixed price after a survey.
We come from Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive around 617 km via the A9, A4, A5 and A67; by lorry that takes about nine hours including breaks, so we usually plan two days. Whether it is an old building in the Quadrate, a flat in the Neckarstadt or a house in Feudenheim: we clarify floor, lift and parking space in advance. The route is described under Moving Berlin – Mannheim. Enquiries on 01625978461.

What we handle when you move to Mannheim
Planned from Berlin, arriving in Mannheim
We have no branch in Mannheim; instead we come by lorry from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21). That is why we ask about access, floor and stairwell in advance – whether it is a flat in the Quadrate or a house in Neckarau. For the parking restriction (Halteverbot) on moving day, the city's roadworks portal expressly does not cover moves – we clarify the right route early with you and the citizens' service (Bürgerservice). We quote the fixed price after the survey; we are liable for your belongings under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre, and additional insurance is available. Places with their own pages are listed under Locations.

Your
move – fully organised
A move to Mannheim raises its own questions: which residents' parking zone is the new square (Quadrat) in, how does the lorry get into the Jungbusch, and where do you apply for a parking restriction if the roadworks portal excludes moves? Frequently asked questions about moving to Mannheim
Mannheim's 17 city districts at a glance
Mannheim is divided into six inner and eleven outer city districts. The inner ones are Innenstadt/Jungbusch, Lindenhof, Neckarstadt-Ost, Neckarstadt-West, Neuostheim/Neuhermsheim and Schwetzingerstadt/Oststadt. The horseshoe-shaped city centre between the Rhine and the Neckar is divided into squares named after letters and numbers.
The outer districts include Feudenheim, Friedrichsfeld, Käfertal, Neckarau, Rheinau, Sandhofen, Schönau, Seckenheim, Vogelstang, Waldhof and Wallstadt. For the move, the specific address is what counts: in the Quadrate and the Jungbusch parking space is scarce, on the edge of town usually less so. Our home move service adapts to this.
Palace, university and metropolitan region: who moves to Mannheim
From 1720 to 1778, Mannheim was the residence city of the Electoral Palatinate; its Baroque palace is one of the largest palace complexes in the world – most of it is now used by the University of Mannheim. Then there are the Mannheim University of Applied Sciences, the National Theatre, the Kunsthalle and the Technoseum. The city is the economic centre of the Rhine-Neckar Metropolitan Region with around 2.4 million inhabitants. We do not quote specific rents.
Mannheim borders directly on Rhineland-Palatinate and Hesse; Ludwigshafen lies on the other bank of the Rhine. If you are arriving at the start of semester, you should fix the moving date early, as many dates are taken around the start of lectures. Everything on routes from Berlin is under Long-distance moves.
Transparent prices for your move
With us there are no hidden costs. The price scale is based on the number of rooms: 1-room flats from €349, 2-room flats from €599, 3-room flats from €884 and 4-room flats from €1,324. For houses or villas we always prepare an individual quote, as the scope varies greatly. If you are moving a longer distance, reckon on from €3.80/km for the long-distance move. The quickest way to find out your exact price is a free survey.
These factors determine your moving price
Besides the volume itself, the distance covered plays a major role – here we calculate from €3.80/km. The floor of the flat and a missing lift also increase the effort. If a parking restriction zone has to be set up, additional costs arise, as they do for booked furniture assembly or a part load.

Moving to Mannheim: parking zones in the Quadrate and the Jungbusch, and parking restrictions
According to the city of Mannheim, the city centre is divided into four residents' parking zones by square: A to D (zone 1.1), E to K (zone 1.2), L to O (zone 1.3) and P to U (zone 1.4). The Jungbusch forms zone 1.5. The city issues only one permit per person; guests receive day parking tickets from the Tourist Information (Willy-Brandt-Platz 5). If you move to a different residents' parking zone within Mannheim, you must change your residents' parking permit. The requirement is a main residence in the zone. Since 1 January 2025, the city has listed these fees:
- New application: €63.75 for 6 months, €127.50 for 12 months,
- Change: €5.00 per change; when renewing, changing the number plate and address is free of charge.
In the Jungbusch, according to the city, residents, employees and restaurant customers compete for parking spaces. On 21 May 2026 the city invited residents to a public consultation on a new parking concept. Expect space to be tight there and clarify the parking area early.
For the parking restriction on moving day: the city's online roadworks portal only covers a mobile no-parking zone for work on private property and expressly excludes moves. So ask the citizens' service early about the right route; we explain the process under Parking restriction zone.
Mannheim: re-registration, bulky waste and the start of semester
Under § 17 of the Federal Registration Act (BMG), anyone who moves into a flat must register with the registration office within two weeks of moving in. In Mannheim, the city refers to the citizens' service with online appointment booking. According to the portal, registration is also possible online and free of charge via wohnsitzanmeldung.gov.de. Further steps are in the guide Re-registration after the move.
Anything that should not move with you can be booked as bulky waste. According to the city of Mannheim, 2 × 4 m³ or 1 × 8 m³ per household per year are free of charge if the items are ready at the kerbside. Collection generally takes place within 30 working days. For additional quantities, the city charges €20.70 per cubic metre or part thereof; a preferred date costs a €62.20 travel flat fee. Items can be taken yourself to the Morchhof 37 recycling centre and the ABG recycling centre on the Friesenheimer Insel. According to the city, you cancel an agreed date at least two working days in advance on 115 (Mon to Fri, 7:30 to 18:00); otherwise the city charges €62.20 for a wasted trip. So book the date before giving notice on your old flat. General tips: Disposing of bulky waste properly.
Students should know the university's dates. The University of Mannheim gives the lecture period for the autumn/winter semester 2026 as 7.9. to 11.12.2026 and for the spring semester 2027 as 15.2. to 4.6.2027. So fix your moving date early. Tips on this: Student move.
