Why Berlin – Essen: work, study, family
A move from Berlin to Essen usually has a concrete reason: a new job in the Ruhr area, studying at the University of Duisburg-Essen or family who already live there. In 2010 Essen was European Capital of Culture on behalf of the whole Ruhr area, and in 2017 it held the title of European Green Capital; in the north lies the Zollverein Coal Mine World Heritage Site, in the south Lake Baldeney. The route: A2 to Dortmund, A40 right through Bochum
The route between Berlin and Essen is around 530 kilometres long. After the A100, AVUS and Berlin ring road, from the Werder interchange we drive on the A2 via Magdeburg and Hanover to the Dortmund-Nordwest interchange, then a short stretch on the A45 and from the Dortmund-West interchange on the A40 through Bochum and Wattenscheid to Essen – via Essen-Kray and the Essen-Ost interchange to the Huttrop and Zentrum exits. According to the ADAC, the A40 between Dortmund and Essen has the most kilometres of congestion per motorway kilometre in Germany.
Lorries over 3.5 t drive at most 80 km/h (§ 18 (5) StVO), and after four and a half hours of driving time a 45-minute break is mandatory (EU Regulation 561/2006): approx. 8 hrs of driving by lorry. Whether loading, driving and unloading run in one day with two drivers or are spread over two days is decided at the survey. For the return move from Essen to Berlin the same route applies in reverse.
Arriving in Essen: north, south, Ruhr – and back to Berlin
Essen is divided into nine boroughs with 50 districts. The geographical centre of the city is in Rüttenscheid; in the north, in Stoppenberg, stands the Zollverein Coal Mine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001. In the south the Ruhr is dammed between Kupferdreh, Heisingen, Fischlaken and Werden to form Lake Baldeney. The north is densely built up, the south greener and more small-scale – which makes a difference for access and parking. We come from Berlin and drive to the door in every district; we apply for the parking restriction in advance.
