Through the Pfänder Tunnel to the Rhine Valley: Berlin ↔ Dornbirn

All the way to the Dornbirner Ach

Unsere Firma Moabit – Allgäu – Pfänder Tunnel – Dornbirn: planned around driving time, calculated as a fixed price, set up in the Rhine Valley.

Nine tenths of the way to Dornbirn is in Germany: the A9 to Nuremberg, then the A6 and the A7 down to Memmingen, then the A96 to the border at Lindau. Only there does Vorarlberg begin – the A14 dives into the Pfänder Tunnel, passes Bregenz on the left and reaches the Dornbirn junctions after around 14 km. We start in Berlin-Moabit, Stromstraße 21; we have no branch in the Rhine Valley. How big the lorry needs to be and what is dismantled is decided by the survey – it is the basis for your fixed price.

The lorry needs about 11.5 hours including all breaks – considerably more than the nine hours a single driver may normally drive per day under EU Regulation 561/2006. That is why the quote includes either a two-driver team at the wheel or one night on the road with unloading on the second day. We are liable for damage under the HGB (§ 451e, €620 per cubic metre of goods); anyone taking valuables can obtain higher cover through us. We dismantle the kitchen, wardrobes and beds and reassemble them at the destination – likewise if you move from Dornbirn to Berlin. We coordinate the schedule with your handover dates in both towns.

PERSONAL ADVICE

Rhine Valley move at a fixed price

Driver team, toll and parking restriction itemised

Our guide price for Dornbirn starts at €3,000. Only the price we state in writing after the survey – in your Berlin flat or by video – is binding. It shows the two-driver team or overnight stop, the toll on the German and Austrian side, both parking restrictions and furniture assembly in the Rhine Valley. We calculate the opposite direction in the same way.

Quotes are available individually depending on effort, availability of dates and the scope of services required.

ALL FROM ONE SOURCE

The same crew in Moabit and in the Rhine Valley

One lorry, one team, one fixed price

Of the roughly 739 kilometres to Dornbirn, only the last 15 or so are in Austria. At the border at Hörbranz nothing has to be declared for furniture and household goods, because both countries are in the EU. What matters: driving and rest times, the lorry toll, a stopping place in front of both buildings. The crew that loads in Moabit also unpacks in the Rhine Valley. You receive your price in writing after the survey; we are liable for damage under the HGB. This is also how we organise the way from Dornbirn back to Berlin.

Packing service

We pack boxes, glass and electronics so that driver changes and eleven and a half hours of motorway do them no harm.

Office move

Companies moving to Dornbirn – for example near the trade fair or the university of applied sciences – we dismantle in Berlin and reassemble in the Rhine Valley.

Senior move

Anyone moving to family in the Rhine Valley later in life gets packing, unpacking and fully set-up furniture from us.

Furniture transport

We secure heirlooms and designer furniture with blankets and ratchet straps for the long route via Nuremberg and the Allgäu.

Preparing
for Dornbirn

What should be settled before the drive to Vorarlberg

Before heading to Dornbirn we discuss: the parking restriction at the Berlin address (district office) and at the new address in the Rhine Valley, dismantling and assembly of the kitchen and wardrobes, storage in Berlin if the handover is later, a two-driver team or overnight stop, and your registration obligations. Austria requires registration with the registration form (Meldezettel) no later than three days after moving in. If you move from Dornbirn to Berlin, you deregister in the Rhine Valley and have two weeks in Berlin for the citizens' office (Bürgeramt).

Dates and registration deadline

Deadlines for the move to Dornbirn: give notice on the Berlin tenancy, coordinate handovers in both towns, set up parking restrictions in good time and submit the Meldezettel no later than three days after moving in.

From box to furniture assembly

With a packing service, furniture transport and assembly, your household goods end up in the flat – whether a new build in Schoren, an old building at the Markt or a house on the slope in Watzenegg.

What moves the price

The price is shaped by volume, floor, the lorry toll in Austria and the choice between a two-driver team and an overnight stop; with few belongings a part-load helps.

Questions about moving Berlin ↔ Dornbirn

Rhine Valley, route, deadlines and the way back

Pfänder Tunnel, driving time, toll and Meldezettel – what matters when moving Berlin ↔ Dornbirn.
The guide price for Berlin–Dornbirn starts at €3,000. Where your fixed price lands depends on the volume, on floors and carrying distances, on packing service or assembly and on the choice between a two-driver team and an overnight stop. After the free survey you receive the price in writing.

Dornbirn: Vorarlberg's most populous town

With just over 52,000 inhabitants, Dornbirn is the largest town in Vorarlberg and the largest in Austria without its own town charter. It lies in the Rhine Valley at the foot of the Bregenz Forest mountains; above the town rises the Karren with its cable car, and to the south the Rappenloch Gorge beckons. For a long time the textile industry shaped the place; today it is companies such as Zumtobel, the Dornbirn trade fair and the Vorarlberg University of Applied Sciences. On a move from Berlin to Dornbirn, furniture and household goods cross the EU internal border without any declaration. What interests us much more is whether the lorry can stop in front of your building, whether there is a lift and how long the carrying distance is.

In the opposite direction, on a move from Dornbirn to Berlin, we load in the Rhine Valley and drive back to the Spree via Lindau, Memmingen and Nuremberg. For the price, what counts is volume, floors, assembly and the 739 kilometres – not which direction it goes in. We apply for the parking restrictions at both addresses.

The route: A9, A6, A7, A96 and the last 14 km on the A14

From Moabit, the A100, the AVUS (A115) and the Berlin ring road A10 lead onto the A9, which we take to Nuremberg. The A6 takes us around 77 km west to the Feuchtwangen/Crailsheim interchange, the A7 148 km south to Memmingen, the A96 another 64 km to the border at Lindau. There the Austrian A14 takes over: first through the Pfänder Tunnel, almost 6.7 km long, then past Bregenz, Lauterach and Wolfurt to the Dornbirn-Nord, -West and -Süd junctions. In total about 739 km and 11.5 hrs including breaks.

On German motorways, lorries over 3.5 t drive at no more than 80 km/h (§ 18 (5) StVO); after 4.5 hours at the wheel a 45-minute break is mandatory. Because the route exceeds the daily driving time, two drivers take turns, or we stay overnight and unload in Dornbirn the following day. For a move from Dornbirn to Berlin we simply reverse the order.

Six districts, hillside hamlets and the Meldezettel

The Dornbirner Ach divides the town; on either side lie the six districts of Markt with the Red House from 1639, Hatlerdorf, Oberdorf, Haselstauden, Rohrbach and Schoren. Higher up the slope come hamlets such as Watzenegg, Kehlegg and Winsau, and right at the back of the valley the former Walser village of Ebnit. For addresses on the mountain we often plan a smaller lorry. Once you have moved into the flat, you have three days to register with the town of Dornbirn using the registration form (Meldezettel); your accommodation provider signs the form, and you also need an ID. With ID Austria it can also be done online via oesterreich.gv.at.

If you move back to Berlin, you deregister in Dornbirn within the period from three days before to three days after moving out; in Berlin you then have two weeks for the citizens' office (Bürgeramt). For unloading we set up the parking restriction at the district office of your new address and plan the day around your flat handover.

Which factors determine the price for Dornbirn

The volume matters most. For Berlin–Dornbirn the distance is added (around 739 km, from €4/km), as well as the lorry toll on the A14. Then come the floor, the lift and extras such as furniture assembly or a parking restriction zone. For a few items, a part-load is often the cheaper solution.
