Why Norderstedt – and why back to Berlin?
A move from Berlin to Norderstedt is often about a job in the Hamburg area or more space for the family without giving up the big city. With around 83,000 inhabitants Norderstedt is the largest town in the Segeberg district and was only created on 1 January 1970 from four municipalities: Garstedt, Friedrichsgabe, Harksheide and Glashütte. Since 1996 the U1 underground line has run via Garstedt to Norderstedt Mitte – giving a direct link to central Hamburg.

First the A24, then across Hamburg: the route
From Stromstraße 21 to Norderstedt it is around 295 kilometres. Via the A111 (19 km) and the Berlin ring road (A10, 10 km) the lorry reaches the Havelland interchange and then drives 238 km on the A24 – via the Wittstock/Dosse interchange and the Schwerin interchange to the end of the motorway at the Horner Kreisel. From there it heads north through Hamburg to the state border and on to Norderstedt. At 80 km/h for lorries over 3.5 t (§ 18 (5) StVO) that is approx. 4 hrs of driving time.
On moving day we load in Berlin, set off and unload in Norderstedt, with furniture assembly on request. Because the driving time is just under the four-and-a-half-hour driving limit, we plan the mandatory break in case of congestion. For the return move from Norderstedt to Berlin everything works the same way, just in reverse order.
Garstedt, Harksheide, Glashütte: arriving on the edge of Hamburg
Administratively Norderstedt is not divided into districts, but people speak of five areas: Garstedt, Harksheide, Glashütte, Friedrichsgabe and Norderstedt-Mitte. To the south the town borders on Hamburg districts such as Langenhorn, Hummelsbüttel and Poppenbüttel. Harksheide is home to the Stadtpark with the Stadtparksee lake, site of the Schleswig-Holstein State Garden Show in 2011.
