We come from Berlin-Moabit and drive to your door in Jena. The city lies in the Saale valley between steep shell limestone and red sandstone slopes, and you notice this when moving: some addresses are on a slope, others in the large prefabricated housing estates of Lobeda, built between 1965 and 1983. With around 109,000 inhabitants, Jena is the second-largest city in Thuringia. Many who move there from Berlin come because of the Friedrich Schiller University: founded in 1558, it is today the largest university in Thuringia. Others follow a job in the optics and glass industry, which goes back to Carl Zeiss – his workshop was founded in 1846, and from 1884 Otto Schott's glassworks was added. Above the city centre stands the JenTower, completed in 1972, at 144.5 m the tallest high-rise in Germany at the time. Route and process: via the Hermsdorfer Kreuz
From Stromstraße 21 to Jena it is around 259 kilometres. Most of it is the A9: from the Potsdam junction past Dessau and the Schkeuditzer Kreuz to the Hermsdorfer Kreuz, the second-oldest motorway interchange in Germany. There the route goes west onto the A4, over the Teufelstal Bridge and past Stadtroda to Jena. Lorries over 3.5 t may drive at a maximum of 80 km/h on the motorway (§ 18 (5) StVO), so we expect approx. 3.5 h of driving time. That stays under the 4.5 hours of driving time after which a 45-minute break is mandatory (EU Regulation 561/2006). We drive the move from Jena to Berlin back on the same route.
On moving day our movers load every item in a fixed order and secure it for the motorway. After the drive we unload at the new address, whether in Jena or in a Berlin district, and reassemble the furniture on request. For a normal flat one long day is usually enough; whether your volume requires more helpers or a second day is decided during the survey.
Arriving in Jena – Lobeda, Winzerla, Wenigenjena
Anyone moving to Jena finds very different locations: the large prefabricated housing estates in Lobeda (Lobeda-West 1965–1975, Lobeda-Ost 1971–1983) and Winzerla, residential streets in Wenigenjena east of the Saale, older houses around the city centre, and Zwätzen and Göschwitz on the outskirts.
