Moving to Lausanne: from Moabit to the slopes above Lake Geneva

Removal company Berlin
From the Spree to Lake Geneva: moving Berlin ↔ Lausanne
Customs border at Basel
Anyone moving from Berlin to Lausanne also changes customs territory: Switzerland is not part of the EU customs union, so your household goods cross the border as household removal goods (Übersiedlungsgut) with form 18.44 and an inventory list. As Beste Umzug Unternehmen we start in Berlin – our base is Stromstraße 21 in Moabit – and bring your furniture with the same team right to your address in the capital of the canton of Vaud. Lausanne climbs steeply from the lakeshore (372 m) to the centre (495 m); that is why we look at access, gradient and carrying distances as early as the survey. After that your fixed price is set in writing.
Around 1062 kilometres and approx. 16.5 hrs by lorry including breaks – that is far more than one driving day: EU Regulation 561/2006 allows one driver a maximum of nine hours a day, and after 4.5 hours a 45-minute break is due. For Vaud we therefore plan two drivers taking turns or two driving days; which option fits we discuss at the survey. Between 10 pm and 5 am, lorry traffic over 3.5 t is suspended in Switzerland. Liability is governed by the German Commercial Code (HGB) (§ 451e: €620 per cubic metre); more cover can be agreed. The same planning applies to the return from Lausanne to Berlin.

Fixed price for Lausanne
Berlin ↔ Lausanne: customs and LSVA in the quote
Between Berlin and Lausanne we set a guide price from €3,960; what is binding is the fixed price we give you after the survey – in your flat or by video. It includes packing, furniture assembly, customs clearance as household removal goods and the LSVA heavy vehicle fee for the Swiss kilometres. It applies there and back, so also to the way from Vaud to Berlin.
Quotes are available individually depending on effort, availability of dates and the scope of services required.

Move
planning Berlin ↔ Lausanne
Before the move to Lausanne we clarify what works differently in Switzerland: the inventory list for the household removal goods (furniture, valuables and large appliances individually, boxes grouped together), form 18.44 and proof such as an employment or tenancy contract. Then there are the parking restrictions in Berlin and a standing area at your address in Lausanne – between Ouchy on the lake and higher quarters such as Chailly or La Sallaz every metre of carrying distance counts – as well as dismantling, assembly and storage if the dates do not match. After moving in, you register with the city's residents' registration office; the residence permit is issued by the canton.

Questions about the route to Lac Léman
To Lausanne and back: changing your residence to Switzerland
A move from Berlin to Lausanne takes you to French-speaking Switzerland, to the capital of the canton of Vaud on the northern shore of Lake Geneva. The city is also the seat of the International Olympic Committee and many international sports federations. Household goods you have used yourself for at least six months and will continue to use can be imported duty-free as household removal goods – with the completed and signed form 18.44, an inventory list and proof that you are moving your residence. We handle packing, transport and assembly and, on request, store items if the new flat is not yet free.
For the return from Lausanne to Berlin the customs steps are reversed: when leaving Switzerland, the customs office receives your household inventory with both addresses, and in Germany you declare the removal goods to customs. For this route too we give you a fixed price after the survey; liability under the German Commercial Code (HGB), more cover on request.
Route and procedure: 1062 km via Basel, Bern and Fribourg
From Moabit we take the A100 and the AVUS (A115) to the Berlin ring road (A10) and drive on the A9 to the Hermsdorfer Kreuz. The A4 leads west past Erfurt and Eisenach; via the Kirchheim and Hattenbach interchanges we switch to the A5, which runs via Frankfurt and Karlsruhe to the joint customs facility at Weil am Rhein/Basel. In Switzerland the A2 follows through Basel and the Belchen tunnel to the Härkingen junction, the A1 to Bern and the A12 via Fribourg and Bulle to above Vevey; we drive the last stretch to Lausanne on the A9. Altogether that is around 1062 km and approx. 16.5 hrs by lorry including breaks.
The speed limit for lorries over 3.5 t on German motorways is 80 km/h (§ 18 (5) StVO); after 4.5 hours of driving time at the latest, a 45-minute break must be taken. One day's driving time is nowhere near enough to reach Vaud, so two drivers take turns, or we stay overnight and clear customs on the following working day – at night from 10 pm to 5 am, lorries over 3.5 t are not allowed to drive in Switzerland anyway. Unloading takes place directly at your address in Lausanne or, for the return move, in Berlin, including furniture assembly.
Arriving on the slopes of Lausanne – and back
Lausanne is a city on a slope: the lakeshore lies at 372 m, the centre at 495 m. Whether your new flat is down in Ouchy or Vidy, around the Cité with Notre-Dame Cathedral or further up in Chailly, La Sallaz or Vennes: we need the address early to check access, gradient, standing space for the lorry and carrying distances, and to coordinate moving day with the flat handover and customs clearance. After moving in you register with the city's Contrôle des habitants (residents' registration office); the municipality states the deadline and documents, and the residence permit is issued by the canton of Vaud.
Back in Berlin you register within two weeks at the registration office (Bürgeramt), with your ID and the landlord's confirmation. We apply for the parking restriction outside the Berlin door at the district office; the signs are put up at least three full days beforehand. You hand over the Lausanne flat as soon as everything is in the lorry – so nobody stands around unnecessarily.
Lausanne: guide prices before the binding fixed price
These figures show roughly what a move from Berlin to Lausanne – or the return from Lausanne – costs. We set the binding price after the survey:
| Number of rooms | Volume | Price from |
|---|---|---|
| 1 room / studio | 10–15 m³ | from €350 |
| 2 rooms | 20–25 m³ | from €590 |
| 3 rooms | 30–40 m³ | from €890 |
| 4 rooms | 45–60 m³ | from €1,290 |
| House | from 60 m³ | quote after survey |
For the roughly 1062 km to Lac Léman we quote a guide price from €3,960, for both directions. LSVA, customs clearance and a second driver or overnight stay are shown separately in the quote. The amount becomes binding after the free survey.
What matters for the price of Berlin–Lausanne
The decisive factor first of all is the volume. For Lausanne there are also the 1062 kilometres, the LSVA from Basel onwards, customs clearance and the second driver or hotel night. In the hillside city, floor, lift, carrying distances and extras such as furniture assembly or a reserved parking space also count. With a part load small households pay less.
