The route is long: via the A9 and A4 through Thuringia, on the A5 to Frankfurt, across the Rhine near Mainz, on the A63 past Alzey to Kaiserslautern and via the A6 into Saarland. The route: around 734 km via Mainz and Kaiserslautern
From Moabit we take the AVUS and A10 onto the A9 to the Hermsdorf interchange, then on the A4 past Erfurt and Eisenach. Via the Kirchheim and Hattenbach junctions we join the A5 to Frankfurt, cross the Rhine near Mainz via short stretches of the A3, A67 and A60 and from the Mainz-Süd interchange take the A63 through Rhenish Hesse, past Alzey and the Donnersberg to the Kaiserslautern junction. The A6 leads via the Neunkirchen interchange to the Saarbrücken junction, and finally the A620 runs along the Saar to Völklingen. Around 734 km in total, approx. 11.5 hrs of lorry driving including breaks.
Lorries over 3.5 t drive at a maximum of 80 km/h on the motorway (§ 18 (5) StVO), and after four and a half hours of driving a 45-minute break is mandatory. Because the pure driving time is over nine hours, two drivers take turns or we stay overnight on the way. On the return move the same route applies in the opposite direction.
Arriving in Völklingen, back to Berlin: registration and access
Völklingen lies on the Saar, a few kilometres west of Saarbrücken, and after Saarbrücken is the second-largest town in the Saarbrücken Regional Association. It is known for the Völklingen Ironworks, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994 – the only completely preserved ironworks from the heyday of industrialisation. The town has ten districts, including Wehrden, Fenne, Geislautern and Ludweiler; the districts on the left bank of the Saar belong to the Warndt and border France. For the move, access, parking area and floor at your address count – we check them in advance. After moving in you register with the town's registration authority within two weeks.
On a return move to Berlin the same two-week deadline applies at the Bürgeramt; you need to bring your ID and the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung). We apply for the parking restriction at the Berlin address at the road traffic authority of the district office – the signs must be up 72 hours beforehand. That way moving out on the Saar and moving in in Berlin fit together.
