The Palatinate and Berlin: the most frequent questions
Why the route leads from Berlin to Kaiserslautern – and back
A move from Berlin to Kaiserslautern often has professional reasons: the city sees itself as a science and IT location, with the university founded in 1970 – today the Rheinland-Pfälzische Technische Universität Kaiserslautern-Landau (RPTU) –, Fraunhofer institutes and the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI). Then there is the Kaiserslautern Military Community, one of the largest US communities outside the USA. Kaiserslautern is an independent city with around 100,000 inhabitants and by area the largest city in Rhineland-Palatinate. We take care of the move from advice to furniture assembly.
The return move from Kaiserslautern to Berlin is just as much in demand, for example after studies, when a fixed-term contract ends or a new job awaits in the capital. We come from Berlin, and older buildings, rear courtyards and parking restrictions there are part of our everyday work. The same planning and the same liability under the HGB apply to both directions.
The route: 655 km via Frankfurt, Mainz and the A63
From Moabit the route goes via the city motorway, the AVUS and the Berlin ring road onto the A9. Beyond Leipzig the lorry reaches the Hermsdorfer Kreuz and follows the A4 west past Erfurt and Eisenach. From the Kirchheim junction it goes to the Hattenbach junction and then around 126 km south on the A5 to the Frankfurter Kreuz. After that the motorways change quickly: a few kilometres of the A3 to the Mönchhof junction, the A67 to the Rüsselsheim junction and the A60, which crosses the Rhine over the Weisenau Bridge, to the Mainz-Süd interchange. There the A63 begins; for around 69 km it runs via the Alzey interchange, past Kirchheimbolanden and Winnweiler to Kaiserslautern.
At just under nine hours, the driving time is close to the daily maximum, because lorries over 3.5 t are limited to 80 km/h on the motorway (§ 18 (5) StVO) and need a 45-minute break after four and a half hours (EU Regulation 561/2006). We therefore calculate approx. 9.5 h of driving; with loading and unloading we schedule two drivers or two days – which suits is decided during the survey. The same route applies back to Berlin.
Arriving at the Palatinate Forest – and the way back to Berlin
Kaiserslautern lies on the north-western edge of the Palatinate Forest and is called the “Barbarossa city” because of Frederick Barbarossa's imperial palace. Besides the core city it includes districts such as Dansenberg, Erfenbach, Erlenbach, Hohenecken, Mölschbach, Morlautern and Siegelbach. On the Betzenberg, 1. FC Kaiserslautern plays in the Fritz-Walter-Stadion. We come from Berlin and drive right to your door – we clarify access and stopping space in advance; you should start your flat search early.
Anyone planning a return move to Berlin is searching in a large, high-demand housing market; start early and only set the moving date once the tenancy agreement is signed. We do not quote specific rents – current figures are in the rent indexes. We plan the parking restriction and registration in Berlin at the same time.
What the move to the Palatinate costs: guide prices
For your move from Berlin to Kaiserslautern – and the route from Kaiserslautern to Berlin – you receive a fixed price after the survey. In advance, these guide prices help with planning:
| Scope | Loading space | Price from |
|---|---|---|
| Small flat (1 room) | 10–15 m³ | from €350 |
| Medium flat (2 rooms) | 20–25 m³ | from €590 |
| Larger flat (3 rooms) | 30–40 m³ | from €890 |
| Large flat (4 rooms) | 45–60 m³ | from €1,290 |
| House | from 60 m³ | individually calculated |
We set the route itself – around 655 km via Mainz and the A63 – at a guide price from €2,500, the same for the outward and return journey, plus volume and extras. These are guide prices; your quote after the free survey is binding.
Driving time, volume, floors: your price for Kaiserslautern
How much has to go into the lorry decides most of the price – the volume. With a long-distance move Berlin–Kaiserslautern the distance of around 655 km is added, charged at a price per kilometre, and because of the long driving time often a second driver. Floor, lift and extras such as furniture assembly also count. Small quantities become cheaper as a part load.
