From the Spree to where the Rhône leaves the lake: moving to Geneva

Removal company Berlin
To the Rhône: your move Berlin ↔ Geneva
With customs and two drivers
A move from Berlin to Geneva ends where the Rhône leaves Lake Geneva – after around 1116 kilometres and a customs border. Because Switzerland is not part of the EU customs union, you declare your household goods as removal goods (Übersiedlungsgut) with form 18.44 and an inventory list. Our team at Beste Umzug Unternehmen comes from Berlin, Stromstraße 21 in Moabit, and drives with your furniture right into your new Geneva flat: from packing via Basel and Bern to assembly. We set the fixed price in writing after the survey, with no surcharges for kilometres or the border crossing.
No single driver can manage approx. 17 hrs lorry driving time with breaks in one day: EU Regulation 561/2006 allows a maximum of nine hours of driving time per day. That is why two drivers take turns at the wheel all the way to Lac Léman, or the journey is spread over two days; we cross the border while the customs office is clearing goods. Between 10 pm and 5 am lorries over 3.5 t stand still in Switzerland. We are liable for damage under the HGB (§ 451e: €620 per cubic metre), with higher cover on request. If your job in Geneva starts on a fixed date – for example at an international organisation – we plan the move around it.

Questions about the route via Basel and Bern
To Geneva and back: changing residence across the border
Geneva is Switzerland's second-largest city and home to many international organisations – including the International Committee of the Red Cross (since 1864), UN institutions and the WHO; CERN is also part of international Geneva. Anyone moving from Berlin to Geneva for such a job or another one moves their residence to a country outside the EU customs union. Household goods that you have used for at least six months and will continue to use enter the country duty-free as removal goods (Übersiedlungsgut), with the signed form 18.44, an inventory list and proof of the change of residence. We handle the logistics from the Berlin flat to the Geneva address.
Anyone returning from Geneva to Berlin crosses the border in the opposite direction: on export the Swiss customs office receives a list of your household goods with both addresses, and in Germany you declare the removal goods to customs. You also receive a fixed price for this after the survey; liability is governed by the HGB, and more cover is possible.
The route: around 1116 km via Basel, Bern and Lausanne
From Moabit we take the A100, AVUS (A115) and the Berlin ring road (A10) onto the A9 south to the Hermsdorfer Kreuz interchange, then on the A4 past Erfurt and Eisenach and via the Kirchheim and Hattenbach interchanges onto the A5. It leads via Frankfurt and Karlsruhe to the joint customs facility at Weil am Rhein/Basel. In Switzerland we drive on the A2 to Härkingen and then on the A1 via Bern, Murten and Yverdon, past Lausanne and via Morges to Geneva. That is around 1116 km and approx. 17 hrs lorry driving time including breaks.
Before departure we pack and secure every piece of furniture, the removal goods are declared at the border, and in Geneva we unload and set up on request. In Germany lorries over 3.5 t are limited to 80 km/h on the motorway (§ 18 (5) StVO), and after 4.5 hours of driving time at the latest a 45-minute break is due; two drivers or a night on the way keep to the rules. For the return move from Geneva to Berlin the same route applies in the opposite direction.
Arriving in Geneva – and returning to Berlin
Whether your new flat is in Eaux-Vives, Champel, Plainpalais or the Pâquis: for moving day, access, parking space for the lorry, floor and stairwell at the specific address count. Tell us the address as soon as the tenancy agreement is signed; we then check the route in advance and apply for the parking area at the responsible city office. Geneva is the most densely populated municipality in Switzerland – a reserved parking space is worthwhile. After moving in, you register your arrival within 14 days with the cantonal population office OCPM (Office cantonal de la population et des migrations); EU citizens also apply for their residence permit there.
Back in Berlin you have two weeks to register at the registration office (Bürgeramt), with your ID and the landlord's confirmation. We apply for the parking restriction outside the Berlin door at the district office; the signs must be in place at least three full days beforehand.
