The town was the residence of the dukes of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg and later of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha; Friedenstein Palace, built between 1643 and 1654, still shapes the townscape today. In 1820 Ernst-Wilhelm Arnoldi founded the Gothaer Feuerversicherungsbank here, and in 1875 the Socialist Workers' Party, a forerunner of the SPD, was founded in the Gotha Tivoli. With the Thüringerwaldbahn, one of the last interurban tramways in Germany, the Thuringian Forest is easy to reach.
