Moving to Gotha: costs process & districts

From Berlin to Gotha
Moving to Gotha: the royal seat around Schloss Friedenstein
Guide
A move to Gotha takes you to the fifth-largest town in Thuringia: around 46,000 people live in this district town, above which the baroque Schloss Friedenstein (Friedenstein Palace) towers. Around the Hauptmarkt and Schlossberg the streets are narrow and parking space is scarce, while Siebleben, Sundhausen or Uelleben are usually quieter. For your home move we therefore check access, floor and the parking space in front of the building in advance – whether it is an old building in the town centre or a detached house on the outskirts.
We come from Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive our lorry around 328 km via the A9 and the A4 to Gotha; with a break that takes about four and a half hours. We quote the fixed price after a survey, and you can add furniture assembly and storage if needed. Details of our services can be found on our Private move page. The route itself is described on the page Moving Berlin – Gotha; we also plan the journey from Gotha back to Berlin.

After a survey, with every item listed
Call us on 01625978461 and arrange a survey for your move to Gotha. Whether it is a flat in an old building in the town centre or a detached house in Boilstädt – we take floor, access and distance into account and then give you a fixed price with every item listed separately. That way you know what to expect before moving to the Thuringian royal seat.
Offers available individually, depending on effort, scheduling and the scope of services required.

What we take care of when you move to Gotha
Planned in Berlin, arriving in Thuringia
We have no branch in Gotha; instead we come by lorry from Berlin-Moabit. That is why we ask in advance how narrow the access is, whether there is a lift and where the van can stop – whether it is an old building below the Schlossberg, a flat in Siebleben or a house in Sundhausen. We apply for the parking restriction in front of the new address according to the requirements of the town of Gotha. We quote the fixed price after the survey; for your belongings we are liable under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre.

Well planned to Gotha
We quote the fixed price for your move to Gotha after the survey – packing, transport over around 328 km, parking restriction and assembly are listed as separate items. That way you know before moving day what costs will arise.
Arrival time set

Parking zone in good time
Planned backwards
Storage to bridge a gap
Ready to settle in
Part load – the clever solution
For smaller quantities of belongings, a part load (Beiladung) to Gotha can be cheaper: your possessions share the load space with other consignments on the same route towards Thuringia. In return you need some flexibility on the delivery day – suitable for single pieces of furniture or boxes.

Moving
& transport from one provider
There are a few organisational points around a move to Gotha: registering at the citizens' office in the Neues Rathaus (New Town Hall) on Ekhofplatz, cordoning off parking spaces through the town's road traffic/trade department, and re-registering your car at the responsible vehicle registration office. You should also switch your electricity and internet contracts early, especially in the old buildings of the town centre. How the journey from Berlin works is explained under Moving Berlin – Gotha.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Gotha
Districts in Gotha: from the old town to Uelleben
The old town of Gotha lies between the Hauptmarkt and Schloss Friedenstein, the largest early baroque palace in Germany. The Ekhof Theatre performs in the west wing, and the Orangery lies by the palace park. Here you live with short distances but on narrow streets. To the east lies Siebleben, part of the town since 1922, with the Mönchspark and its own primary school; Sundhausen joined in 1974.
Boilstädt and Uelleben were incorporated in 1994 and have a village character; the resettled villages of Kindleben and Töpfleben also belong to Gotha. For the move, the address matters more than the district: an old building without a lift on the Schlossberg needs different planning from a house in Uelleben. We organise your move to Gotha to suit the access.
Living in Gotha: district town, rail hub, A4
Gotha has around 46,000 inhabitants (31 December 2025) and is the district town of the Landkreis Gotha (Gotha district). Until 1918 the town was the seat of the Dukes of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, as the palace, park and museums testify. Today Gotha is home to the Thuringian University of Applied Sciences for Public Administration; the larger companies include Gothaer Fahrzeugtechnik. We do not quote specific rents, as they depend heavily on location and condition.
In terms of transport, Gotha lies on the Thuringian Railway (Thüringer Bahn), where ICE trains between Dresden and Frankfurt am Main stop every two hours, and on the A4 with the Gotha-Boxberg and Gotha junctions. Erfurt-Weimar Airport is about 15 km to the east. For commuters to Erfurt that is an argument in its favour, and for the removal lorry from Berlin it means a short way from the A4 into town.

Cordoning off parking for your move in Gotha: applying to the town
According to gotha.de, the road traffic/trade department (Abteilung Straßenverkehr/Gewerbe) of the town administration is responsible for cordoning off parking spaces or a parking restriction for a move in Gotha: Neues Rathaus, Ekhofplatz 24, 99867 Gotha, telephone 03621 222-715. Usually the commissioned moving company applies; without a moving company, the private individual submits the application.
What is required is a traffic regulation order (verkehrsrechtliche Anordnung), applied for in writing to the local road traffic authority. Depending on the case, a special-use permit may also be necessary. The town accepts informal applications, and you do not need to appear in person. Authorisation is only needed if someone else applies on your behalf. According to the town, online processing is in preparation; until then, contact the authority directly.
According to the town, your application must state:
- the location of the area to be kept clear
- the period
- the length in metres (depending on the vehicle used)
- the traffic safety company or a person certified under MVAS
The application period is 14 days, and the traffic signs must be in place at least three days before they take effect. The town recommends applying at least two weeks before the moving date. Fees vary and, according to the town, depend on the duration and scope of the measure.
On request we organise your parking restriction zone and clarify the length during the survey. The location page can be found under Moving company Gotha.
Registering at the Gotha citizens' office: deadline, opening hours and documents
After moving in, you register at the citizens' office (Bürgerbüro) in Gotha. According to gotha.de you must do this within two weeks of moving in; late registration can be punished with a fine, the amount of which the page does not state. The citizens' office is in the Neues Rathaus, Ekhofplatz 24, telephone 03621 222-402 or 222-405. Appointments are required.
Opening hours according to the town: Monday and Friday 9 am–2 pm, Tuesday and Thursday 9 am–6 pm, Wednesday 9 am–12 noon; on the first Friday of the month until 6 pm. You should bring:
- the completed and signed registration form
- your identity card or passport
- the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung)
- authorisation if someone represents you
Electronic residence registration (eWA) is possible via wohnsitzanmeldung.gov.de. For this you need a BundID account, an ID card with the online ID function activated plus PIN, and a card reader or smartphone with the AusweisApp. The town does not state any fees for registration. Important: according to the town, the form must be signed by you personally, even if a representative attends the appointment.
It is best to plan the appointment soon after moving day, as according to the town appointments are required. According to the town, a citizens' hotline can be reached on 03621 222-222 (Historisches Rathaus, Hauptmarkt 1). What else matters locally is covered under Living in Gotha.
