Newcomer's Guide to Gera
Gera: University Town on the White Elster
for newcomers
With 95,162 inhabitants (31 December 2025), Gera is the third-largest city in Thuringia after Erfurt and Jena. It lies in the north of the Vogtland on the White Elster (Weiße Elster); Leipzig is about 60 km away, Erfurt 80 km. As the residence of the Princes Reuss and a wealthy cloth-making town, Gera was left with over 100 town villas and many Gründerzeit buildings. In 2007, together with Ronneburg, the city hosted the Federal Garden Show (Bundesgartenschau); the Hofwiesenpark, the kitchen garden and the Orangery were renovated for it. Since 2017 Gera has held the title of university town, and it is also known as the Otto Dix town.
For newcomers, daily life begins at the StadtService H35 at Heinrichstraße 35: according to the city, this is where you register within two weeks, and access is by appointment only. One of the largest employers is the SRH Wald-Klinikum, with more than 1,700 staff and a teaching hospital of the University of Jena. You can study at the Duale Hochschule Gera-Eisenach (cooperative university) and the SRH University of Health. We do not give specific rents because we have no reliable source. We handle the transport from Berlin as a home removal.
