Frequently asked questions about moving in Gera
Newer estates such as Lusan or Bieblach-Ost usually offer wide access roads and working lifts, while in the city centre and Untermhaus a parking restriction zone is more often advisable because of narrow streets.
Gera in the Elster valley: what shapes a move here
Gera lies in the valley of the White Elster in eastern Thuringia and, after Erfurt and Jena, is the third-largest city in the state. The city area comprises 28 neighbourhoods, from the city centre and the villa quarter of Untermhaus on both sides of the Elster to the large prefab estates of Lusan and Bieblach-Ost. Many streets have noticeable gradients – this affects loading and the choice of vehicle. Praktik Transport und Umzüge is not based in Gera but at Stromstraße 21 in Berlin-Moabit; for your move, the team travels with the lorry.
With us, a move in Gera begins with a survey by video or by arrangement, followed by a fixed-price quote. We then plan packing, dismantling, transport and reassembly. In the city centre around the market square, space for removal vans is limited; there we clarify in advance how close the vehicle can get to the front door.
The A4 runs through the north of the city area with the junctions Gera-Langenberg and Gera-Leumnitz and the Gera interchange (Geraer Kreuz). From our base in Berlin-Moabit it is around 241 road kilometres, mostly via the A9 – a good three hours of pure driving time by lorry.
Whether you are moving from a prefab block in Lusan to an older flat in Debschwitz or coming to Gera from the surrounding area – we check the building fabric, lift and parking options for every address. For delicate individual items such as a piano, you can book our piano transport. This makes your move in Gera safe and predictable from the start.
From Untermhaus to Bieblach-Ost: residential areas in Gera
Gera is divided into numerous neighbourhoods with very different characters, which directly affects the effort and process of a move. Someone living in Untermhaus, shaped by the Gründerzeit period with its villas on the Elster slope, has different requirements from someone moving out of Lusan – the most populous district, built as a prefab estate in the 1970s.
- City centre: Gründerzeit buildings, pedestrian zone, tight parking restriction zones needed
- Untermhaus: villa quarter in the Elster valley, hilly access roads
- Lusan: large modern estate with high-rises, usually with a lift
- Bieblach-Ost: prefab buildings from the 1980s, good access for removal vans
- Debschwitz: mix of old and new buildings near the Elster
- Zwötzen: quiet residential area with detached houses
- Tinz and Langenberg: city edge on the A4, with commercial space in Tinz as well
- Trebnitz: area of detached houses in the east of the city
In the newer estates such as Lusan or Bieblach-Ost there are wide access roads and usually working lifts, which makes transport easier. It is different in the historic city centre and in Untermhaus: narrow one-way streets, cobblestones and limited parking spaces require a parking restriction zone organised in advance, so that our team can work without long carrying distances.
For residential areas on the outskirts, such as Tinz or Trebnitz, we plan the approach via the B2 or B92 to avoid roadworks and inner-city traffic. Whichever district of Gera your new home is in – our private move service is tailored to the location and ensures a smooth process from the first box to the last piece of furniture.
What a move in Gera costs
Moving costs in Gera depend on the size of the flat, floor, distance and the additional services required. Thanks to good access via the A4, B2 and B7, travel costs within the city and the surrounding area usually remain moderate. We calculate transparently and without hidden costs.
| Service | Starting price | Note |
|---|---|---|
| One-room flat | from €359 | e.g. city centre or Lusan, surcharge possible without a lift |
| Two-room flat | from €605 | incl. basic packing |
| Three-room flat | from €889 | cheaper for a flat with a lift |
| Long-distance move (nationwide) | from €3.95/km | e.g. towards Berlin, Leipzig, Dresden |
| Parking restriction zone | €30–100/day | depending on street and permit duration |
Other factors that affect the price include a floor without a lift, bulky furniture, a required piano transport or a requested clearance of the old flat. If you only want to transport a few pieces of furniture, you save real money with our part load, as the journey is combined with other moves.
The location also plays a role: in narrow old-town streets a parking restriction zone is often necessary, while in newer estates such as Bieblach-Ost there is usually enough parking space. Before every order we prepare an individual, free quote, so that you know the actual moving costs in Gera precisely from the start – with no surprises at the end.
Planning a parking restriction in Gera city centre
Anyone moving in Gera knows the problem: in the city centre around the market square and Heinrichstraße, and in Untermhaus with its narrow villa streets, free parking space is often scarce on moving day. So that furniture does not have to be carried over long distances, an official parking restriction zone often makes sense.
In Gera, the Road Traffic Department (lower traffic authority, Untere Verkehrsbehörde) orders the signage; you submit the application in writing, and as a rule the commissioned moving company takes care of this. If special use of public space is also needed, the city states a lead time of at least 14 days for this application. We help you state the location, length and period correctly.
- Order via the Road Traffic Department of the city of Gera
- Put up signs in good time before the moving date
- Our price list: €30 to €100 per day, depending on street and duration
- Particularly important in the city centre, in Untermhaus and in narrow one-way streets
- Can be combined with our private move service
Even in newer estates such as Lusan or Bieblach-Ost, where access roads are wider, a zone can make sense if a large removal van has to stand directly in front of the entrance. Especially for moves with a tight schedule – such as a company move during business hours – a reserved space prevents unnecessary waiting times.
You will find more information on our page about the parking restriction zone. This saves you time, avoids trouble with illegally parked cars, and your move in Gera runs without delay from the first to the last box.
Gera on the A4: moves to Jena, Leipzig or Berlin
The A4 runs through the northern part of Gera with the junctions Gera-Langenberg and Gera-Leumnitz and the Gera interchange. Via the A4 you reach Jena and Erfurt to the west and Chemnitz and Dresden to the east; the A9 towards Leipzig and Berlin is quickly reached via the motorway network.
Common destinations for moves from Gera:
- Leipzig and the Halle–Leipzig region
- Dresden and Chemnitz via the A4
- Berlin – around 241 road kilometres to our base on Stromstraße, mostly via the A9
- Other Thuringian cities such as Jena, Weimar and Erfurt
For moves over long distances, our price list states from €3.95 per kilometre, depending on the moving volume and additional services such as packing material or assembly; the binding price is the fixed price after a survey. For smaller volumes, our part load is an affordable alternative in which your transport is combined with other journeys.
We also plan moves between Gera and other Thuringian cities such as Gotha, Eisenach or Suhl with realistic driving times and stopovers. Because our team travels from Berlin, we schedule such dates with some lead time.
Whether within Thuringia or right across Germany: we plan your route so that your belongings arrive safely, on time and at the agreed price.

- Private move – from a one-room flat in Lusan to a detached house in Zwötzen
- Company move – for offices and businesses in Gera and the surrounding area
- Part load – cost-effective transport for smaller volumes
- Clearance – household clearances and cellar clearance
- Parking restriction zone – organisation and permit on site
- Piano transport – for instruments and other heavy loads

We have suitable vehicles for narrow streets in the old town as well as larger vans that can manoeuvre easily in newer estates such as Bieblach-Ost. Packing material, lifting tools and assembly equipment are included with every order.
We are also happy to plan special requests in Gera, such as disposing of bulky waste after a household clearance or the safe transport of valuable individual items. Because our team travels from Berlin, we schedule dates throughout the city – from Untermhaus to Trebnitz – with some lead time. Our aim is to make every move in Gera as stress-free as possible, whether it is a small part load or a complete company move.
Office, practice, business: company move in Gera
As the third-largest city in Thuringia, Gera is an important business location with commercial space on the outskirts, for example in Tinz on the A4, and numerous companies from industry, trades and services. For a company move in Gera, meticulous planning is essential so that business operations are interrupted as little as possible.
Our company move service begins with a detailed inventory of office furniture, IT infrastructure, files and archives. We draw up a schedule that allows moves outside business hours or at the weekend, so as not to disrupt customer traffic and workflows.
- Dismantling and assembly of office furniture and shelving systems
- Safe transport of IT equipment and server technology
- Labelling system for files and departments
- Organisation of a parking restriction zone in front of office buildings in the city centre
- Flexible time windows, including evenings or weekends
Especially in Gera city centre, with limited parking in front of office buildings, a parking restriction zone set up in advance is particularly important to avoid vehicle waiting times. In the commercial areas on the outskirts, on the other hand, there is usually enough space for larger lorries, which speeds up loading and unloading.
For companies with several sites in Thuringia, for example with branches in Jena or Erfurt, we also coordinate moves across several cities. This ensures that branches and offices remain operational on schedule. For medium-sized businesses and smaller offices in Gera, we plan every commercial move with a fixed price and a fixed schedule.
Student move in Gera: process and simple booking
Gera is a location for higher education and training, among others through the Duale Hochschule Gera-Eisenach (cooperative state university) and the SRH university of health, as well as its proximity to the university cities of Jena and Erfurt, where many students keep their residence in Gera or move there. For this group we offer a dedicated student move that is fast, straightforward and budget-conscious.
As students often move into smaller flats or rooms in shared flats, we calculate compact packages starting from the one-room price of €359. In newer estates such as Lusan or near the city centre with good bus and tram connections, we reliably collect boxes and furniture on flexible dates.
The booking process at Praktik Transport und Umzüge is deliberately kept simple:
- Free enquiry by phone, email or online form
- Individual fixed-price quote based on flat size and distance
- Scheduling, also possible at short notice
- Carrying out the move including assembly and dismantling
- Optional additional services such as clearance of old furniture or a part load for a few items
For older people who want to move into a smaller flat or assisted living, our senior move offers a sensitive service that leaves plenty of time for personal keepsakes.
Whether it is a student move within Gera, from the parental home in the surrounding area to a shared flat in the city centre, or in preparation for studies in a neighbouring city such as Jena – booking with us is straightforward, transparent and without hidden costs. Simply contact us and we will take care of the rest.
Parking restriction in Gera: Road Traffic at the city's public order office
For a move in Gera, you apply for the signage at the Road Traffic Department (Abteilung Straßenverkehr), the lower traffic authority of the city of Gera. According to gera.de, it offers "traffic law orders for signage and markings", explicitly also for moves. The office belongs to the public order office (Ordnungsamt) and is located at Ernst-Toller-Straße 15, 07545 Gera.
- Contact: The department can be reached on 0365 838 4720. Service hours according to the city: Monday, Tuesday and Thursday 9 am to 5 pm, closed on Wednesday, Friday 9 am to 3 pm.
- Visitors: At the time of our check, the city pointed out that the building is closed to visitors until further notice. Contact is by phone or in writing, so it is best to clarify your request by calling.
- Lead time and fee: The city's website gives no figures on this. Ask the department directly about both before you fix your moving date.
Plan the zone for moving out and moving in separately: the authority of the respective town is responsible for the old address, and the city of Gera for the new address in Gera. You will find general instructions in our guide to the parking restriction zone; on request, we take care of the organisation through our parking restriction zone service.
Gera: neighbourhoods, registration and residents' parking when moving
The city of Gera lists numerous neighbourhoods on its website, including the city centre, Untermhaus, Lusan, Bieblach-Ost, Debschwitz, Zwötzen and the western suburbs (Westvororte). For planning this means: access, floor and lift differ from address to address; we look at them during the survey. Also read our moving guide for Gera and the guide for newcomers.
Registration: According to the city of Gera, you register your flat with the registration office within two weeks of moving in; it is free of charge. The responsible office is StadtService H35, Heinrichstraße 35. Visits are generally only possible by appointment (online at termin.gera.de or by phone on 0365 838-1900). You need your ID and the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung); the tenancy agreement does not usually meet the requirements.
Residents' parking: The city lists residents' parking zones A, B, C, D, E, G and K. The requirement is a main residence in Gera within such a zone. For a secondary residence in Gera or more than two number plates, the city says you should first call StadtService H35; for the online application the city states €90.00. For helpers' vehicles, the city names car parks such as Gera-Arcaden, Zentrum, City, Factory-UCI and Markt/Rathaus. For journeys to Jena or other Thuringian cities, see the overview of Thuringia.
