From Berlin to Gera
Moving to Gera: Gründerzeit, Höhler cellars and Hofwiesenpark
Guide
With around 95,000 inhabitants, Gera is Thuringia's third-largest city after Erfurt and Jena and lies in the valley of the White Elster. In the Gründerzeit era of the late 19th century, the city grew rich through the textile industry; villas in Untermhaus and Heinrichsgrün and historicist buildings in the city centre bear witness to this. In GDR times, the new housing estates of Lusan and Bieblach-Ost were built. We come from Berlin-Moabit and plan your private move according to access, floor and staircase – details under Private move.
By lorry it is around 241 km from Stromstraße, mostly via the A9, and about three hours with the statutory break – a move to Gera can usually be done in one day. Whether an old building in Debschwitz or a house in Zwötzen: we clarify parking restrictions, carrying routes and assembly in advance and then give you a fixed price. The route is described on the page Berlin – Gera move; we plan the return journey from Gera to Berlin in the same way.

What we handle on your move to Gera
Planned in Berlin, arriving in East Thuringia
We have no branch in Gera; instead we come with the lorry from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21). That is why we ask about access, floor and lift in advance – from a block of flats in Lusan to a villa in Untermhaus. We plan the parking restriction according to the city's rules and give you the fixed price after the survey. We are liable for your belongings under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre; additional insurance is available for valuables. Places with their own pages can be found under Locations.

Part load: move affordably
For smaller moves or single items to Gera, a part load (Beiladung) can be cheaper: your belongings travel together with other consignments towards Thuringia. You need some flexibility on the delivery day – handy if only a few pieces of furniture are following.

From
planning to the StadtService
A move to Gera involves a few organisational tasks: registration at the StadtService in Heinrichstraße must take place within two weeks of moving in, and you should also transfer electricity, internet and the broadcasting licence fee in good time. The parking restriction outside the building requires an order from the city. You re-register your car with the vehicle registration authority of the independent city of Gera. We will gladly advise you on all the details of your private move.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Gera
Gera's districts at a glance
The city centre, with the old town, market square and the town hall of 1576 as well as the Ostviertel, lies east of the White Elster; beneath the old town run the historic Höhler, deep cellars from the 17th and 18th centuries. Between the city centre and the districts of Untermhaus and Heinrichsgrün, with their many villas from the industrial era, the Hofwiesenpark of the 2007 Federal Garden Show lies on the Elster. Debschwitz is home to the Tierpark, one of the largest zoos in Thuringia.
The large new housing estates of Lusan and Bieblach-Ost were built in GDR times; there are many flats in multi-storey blocks there. Life is more rural in districts such as Zwötzen, Trebnitz or Langenberg. We plan the route for your move individually – narrow access roads in Untermhaus need different preparation from an upper floor in Lusan.
Work, higher education and leisure in Gera
We do not quote specific rents – they depend heavily on the district and the condition of the property. One of the largest employers is the SRH Wald-Klinikum Gera with more than 1,700 employees, a teaching hospital of the University of Jena. There are also industrial companies such as Electronicon, POG-Präzisionsoptik and the Kaeser compressor plant. You can study at the Duale Hochschule Gera-Eisenach and the private SRH Hochschule für Gesundheit; Friedrich Schiller University is in nearby Jena.
For leisure there is the Hofwiesenpark on the Elster, the Tierpark in Debschwitz, the Stadtwald – the largest contiguous forest area of any Thuringian city –, the Otto Dix House and the Höhler cellars beneath the old town. Gera lies on the A4; Leipzig is around 60 km away and Erfurt around 80 km. Anyone looking for peace, greenery and short distances will find a balanced environment here.

Moving prices explained
The most important factor is volume – the more furniture and boxes, the greater the effort. Distance is charged from €4.25/km, and the floor and lift also play a role. A parking restriction zone makes things run more smoothly but causes additional costs. If needed, we add furniture assembly or a part load.
Moving professionals for every situation
Whether private, business or a one-off job – we are here for you.
Business move – reliable for companies of all sizes.

Furniture transport – also possible at short notice.

Applying for a parking restriction for your move in Gera
According to the city's service portal, a parking restriction on moving day in Gera requires a traffic order (verkehrsrechtliche Anordnung) and, where applicable, a special use permit. The responsible office is the Gera city administration, Department 2470 Road Traffic, Handwerkerhof 13, 07548 Gera (tel. 0365 838-4720, [email protected]). The application can be made informally; according to the city, an online procedure is still in the works.
- Details: location, period and length in metres, depending on the vehicle
- A separate order is required for the moving-in and moving-out addresses
- Application deadline: 14 days, i.e. at least two weeks before the move
- Put up signs only after receiving the order, at least 3 days before it takes effect
The application is usually submitted by the removal company, or by the private individual if there is no removal company. According to the city, the fees depend on the duration and scope of the measure; the page does not give amounts. Reserving parking spaces yourself with chairs or barrier tape is prohibited. How the procedure generally works is explained in our guide Applying for a parking restriction zone; our offer can be found under Parking restriction zone.
During the survey we clarify with you how long the space outside the building needs to be and whether the moving-in and moving-out addresses each need their own application. This lets you meet the two-week deadline safely, and on moving day the van stands right at the entrance instead of double-parked.
Access in Gera and registration at the StadtService
Whether Lusan, Bieblach or another district: we clarify access during the survey, because the lift, house rules and carrying routes determine how long it takes. On the City of Gera's housing page, the landlords listed include GWB Elstertal, TAG Wohnen, WBG Aufbau and the Wohngenossenschaft Neuer Weg. If you rent from one of these landlords, ask in advance about using the lift and the house rules so that nothing gets in the way on moving day.
After moving in, you register at the StadtService H35, Heinrichstraße 35, 07545 Gera. According to the city, an appointment is generally required: online at termin.gera.de or by phone on 0365 838-1900. It is open until 6 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and from 9 am to 1 pm on Saturdays. Alternatively, there is electronic registration at wohnsitzanmeldung.gov.de.
The city's page does not state a deadline; the nationwide deadlines are explained in our guide Re-registration after the move: deadlines. Further information about our location can be found under Removal company Gera and in the guide Living in Gera.
In larger residential buildings, the lift, the width of the staircase and parking options outside the building are decisive for how long the move takes. We record these points during the survey so that the fixed price matches the actual situation on site and there are no surprises on moving day.
