Living in Suhl
Suhl: weapons town in the valley of the Lauter and Hasel
Neighbourhoods, work, offices
Suhl lies on the southern slope of the Thuringian Forest in the valley of the Lauter and Hasel, surrounded by mountains between 650 and 983 metres high. The town became known for hunting weapons – since 2005, by resolution of the town council, it has called itself Waffenstadt (weapons town) – and for Simson's vehicle works. At the end of 2023 around 36,300 people lived here. The town area includes the centre in the valley, prefab housing complexes on the outskirts and ten incorporated villages, since 2019 also Gehlberg and Schmiedefeld am Rennsteig. The Rennsteig, one of Germany's best-known hiking trails, runs close by; the Schwarzer Crux show mine is in the Vesser district. For your move this means: allow for inclines, high altitudes and narrow village roads.
Whether you are moving to Suhl for a job, for the countryside or to be near family – we come from Berlin (Stromstraße 21, Moabit) and drive the roughly 359 kilometres via the A9, A4 and A71 in one day. Our private move covers planning, packing, transport and furniture assembly. We also handle a long-distance move from Suhl back to Berlin. We quote the fixed price after the survey, and our liability for your goods is under the German Commercial Code (HGB). Call us on 01625978461.

How we plan your move-in in Suhl
Incline, floor, access
Suhl lies in a valley, with many residential areas on slopes: the centre has narrower streets and little parking space, the prefab housing complexes on the outskirts often have five or more floors, and the villages have narrow, steep access roads. We ask precisely about the floor, lift and access and, if necessary, apply for a parking restriction order from the road traffic authority (Straßenverkehrsbehörde) in the Ordnungs- und Bürgeramt (public order and citizens' office). The vehicle and team size depend on this. We quote the fixed price after the survey, and liability is under the German Commercial Code (HGB). Further destinations can be found under service areas.

Suhl is a weapons town – if you own hunting weapons yourself, you should clarify their transport and storage during the move with the responsible firearms authority in advance and mention it to us during the survey. Before
the move to Suhl
A move to Suhl comes with a few local particularities. Some of the districts are far apart and high up – Vesser in the Vesser valley at 600 to 800 metres, Gehlberg and Schmiedefeld directly on the Rennsteig. Many roads there are narrow and steep. Via the A71 and A73, Suhl is well connected to the motorway network. We advise you on the parking restriction, the lift in the housing complex and the right date, especially in winter.

Frequently asked questions about living in Suhl
Centre, housing complexes, mountain villages: Suhl's districts
The centre lies in the valley with the market square, the gunsmith monument and the weapons museum in the Malzhaus. In the GDR, Suhl became a district capital and was heavily rebuilt; the prefab housing complexes on the outskirts date from this period and, together with the centre, form the core of the town. You will find many rented flats here; before the move, check whether there is a lift and which floor you will live on.
In addition there are ten incorporated villages: Heinrichs with its half-timbered town hall from 1657 and its own railway stop, Neundorf, Mäbendorf and Dietzhausen in the Hasel valley, Albrechts, Wichtshausen and Goldlauter-Heidersbach, as well as the high-altitude villages of Vesser, Gehlberg and Schmiedefeld am Rennsteig. If you are looking for peace and nature, you will find houses with gardens here – but longer journeys into the centre.
Working and living in Suhl
The largest employer in healthcare is the SRH Zentralklinikum Suhl, the largest hospital in South Thuringia with 22 specialist fields and sub-fields. The tradition of hunting weapons lives on in gunsmiths' workshops; since 1992 the vocational school for gunsmiths has been the only one of its kind in Germany, and the proof house from 1893 is the oldest. Suhl has no university of its own, but the TU Ilmenau is nearby. We do not quote specific rents because they vary greatly by location and condition.
In everyday life, forest and heights shape the town: the Rennsteig close by, winter sports at higher altitudes and the Schwarzer Crux show mine in Vesser. The Congress Centrum Suhl with up to 5,000 seats and the vehicle museum with Simson motorcycles is a venue for concerts and events. By train you can reach Erfurt, Meiningen and Würzburg.
Guide prices for Suhl
Transparency comes first for us: we move 1-room flats from €365, 2-room flats from €615. For 3-room flats we charge from €894, for 4-room flats from €1,329. A house or villa requires an individual quote, while long-distance moves are charged from €3.85/km. Arrange a free survey now to clarify all the details.
What determines the price for Suhl
Besides the pure volume of your furniture, it is above all the distance (from €3.85/km) that affects the total cost. A floor without a lift or a required parking restriction zone (Halteverbotszone) can also increase the price. If you also book furniture assembly or a part load, you should factor this in.

From Berlin to Suhl – and back
We come from Berlin and carry out moves to Suhl as well as back, around 359 kilometres in one day. The page Moving from Berlin to Suhl describes the route and driving time; further destinations are shown in the overview of service areas, and everything about long routes is under long-distance moves.
Parking restriction for moving day in Suhl: the road traffic authority in the Ordnungs- und Bürgeramt
In Suhl, a parking restriction in front of the building is ordered by the road traffic authority (Straßenverkehrsbehörde). It is part of the Ordnungs- und Bürgeramt (Friedrich-König-Straße 42, 98527 Suhl) and, according to the town, is responsible for enforcing the Road Traffic Regulations, including ordering traffic signs and traffic installations as well as exemption permits.
In the town's form service, two applications relevant to you are listed among the other services: the Antrag auf Anordnung verkehrsregelnder Maßnahmen (application for traffic-regulating measures) and the Antrag auf Ausnahmegenehmigung bei Verkehrsbeschränkungen (application for an exemption from traffic restrictions). The town does not mention the word "Halteverbot" (parking restriction), a fee or a lead time on the pages we checked. So ask by phone before applying (03681 74-2401, [email protected]).
According to the town, the Ordnungs- und Bürgeramt can be reached on Mondays from 08:00 to 13:00, Tuesdays from 08:00 to 17:00, Thursdays from 08:00 to 18:00 and Fridays from 08:00 to 13:00. Plan your application so that the order is in place in good time before the moving date, because the signs have to be put up beforehand. The town administration (Marktplatz 1, 98527 Suhl) can be reached centrally on 03681 74-0 or at [email protected].
How we organise the cordoned-off area in practice is explained on our page about the parking restriction zone. Our moving company for the town can be found under moving company Suhl.
Suhl's districts and re-registration: what to do after moving in
On its website, the town of Suhl describes ten districts, which present themselves very differently for a move. According to the town, Albrechts lies on the southern slope of the Thuringian Forest and has around 1,300 inhabitants. Dietzhausen and Mäbendorf (approx. 600 inhabitants) lie in the Hasel valley. Gehlberg and Schmiedefeld am Rennsteig lie directly on the Rennsteig, Vesser in the Vesser valley at an altitude of 600 to 800 metres. There you should allow more time for the removal van's approach in winter.
Re-registration is governed by the Federal Registration Act (BMG): under § 17 you must register with the registration authority within two weeks of moving in. In Suhl, the Ordnungs- und Bürgeramt is responsible; you book appointments online via the town's appointment portal, and the town offers further online services of the registration authority via its form server. According to the town, the registration authority is also open on the first Saturday of every month from 09:00 to 12:00.
According to § 17 (2) BMG, deregistering at your old place of residence is only necessary if you are not moving into a new home in Germany; for a move within Germany, registering at your new place of residence is sufficient. Which documents the registration authority requires in an individual case can be found out on 03681 74-2401.
