Moving to Erfurt: costs process and districts

From Berlin to Erfurt
Moving to Erfurt – well prepared for the state capital
Guide
A move to Erfurt takes you to the state capital of Thuringia: a medieval old town with the Krämerbrücke (Merchants' Bridge) and Cathedral Square, plus Wilhelminian-era suburbs and large residential areas such as the Rieth in the north. The university, the university of applied sciences, public administration and the ICE hub at the central station attract many newcomers. In the old town the lanes are narrow and parking is scarce; on the outskirts things are easier. Through our private move services we organise transport, packing and furniture assembly.
We come from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and drive around 301 km on the A9 and, from the Hermsdorfer Kreuz interchange, on the A4 to Erfurt; by lorry we reckon on about four hours including a break. That means a move to Erfurt usually fits into one day. We quote the fixed price after the survey, including the return trip from Erfurt to Berlin. Whether a half-timbered house near the Krämerbrücke, a period building in the Löbervorstadt or a prefabricated block on the Roter Berg: we clarify access, floor and the parking restriction beforehand. More on the route under Move Berlin – Erfurt.

What we handle on your move to Erfurt
Fixed price after a survey
We have no branch in Erfurt; we come by lorry from Berlin-Moabit. That is why we ask about access, floor and staircase in advance – whether a narrow old-town lane, a Wilhelminian-era house in the Brühlervorstadt or a new build in Melchendorf. We apply to the city in good time for a parking restriction in front of the new address. We quote the fixed price after the survey; it includes transport, staff and the items we discussed beforehand. We are liable for your belongings under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre, and additional insurance is available for valuable items.

Everything
for your move
Around a move to Erfurt, newcomers usually have the same questions: which district suits me, how does re-registration at the Bürgeramt work, where does the lorry park in the old town? We advise on parking restriction zones, using the lift in blocks of flats and access through the narrow historic lanes. For many people, furniture assembly, kitchen fitting and clearing out the old flat are also part of the move. On our private move page you will find the right additional services – from packing service to storage if the new flat is not yet free. From Berlin it is around 301 km via the A9 and A4.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Erfurt
Districts in Erfurt: where is it good to live?
Erfurt is divided into very different neighbourhoods. The old town around the Krämerbrücke and Cathedral Square delights with half-timbered houses, but is correspondingly sought-after and more expensive. The Andreasvorstadt is considered a creative, trendy neighbourhood with many young people, cafés and good links to the university. Families appreciate the quieter Brühlervorstadt near the egapark, while the Löbervorstadt, close to the Erfurt University of Applied Sciences, is popular with students.
If you want to live more cheaply, Ilversgehofen, Melchendorf or the Roter Berg usually offer cheaper flats with good public transport links. These districts are particularly interesting for young families and people starting their careers who still want to get to the centre quickly. Via our locations page you will find places with their own page.
Employers, universities and quality of life in Erfurt
As the state capital of Thuringia, Erfurt offers numerous jobs in public administration, at Siemens and in logistics and services. The University of Erfurt and the Erfurt University of Applied Sciences also attract thousands of students and researchers to the city every year, which livens up the housing market in neighbourhoods near the universities. The ICE hub at Erfurt central station also ensures short journey times to Berlin, Frankfurt and Munich, ideal for commuters.
Quality of life in Erfurt is considered high: moderate rents compared with Weimar or Jena, plenty of green space such as the egapark and a lively old town with culture and places to eat. This mix of affordable housing, good jobs and short distances makes a move to Erfurt attractive for many families and working people.
What does a move in Germany cost?

Larger properties such as a house or villa are calculated individually. For a long-distance move we charge from €4.20/km. Use our free survey to get clarity on your costs.
Moving costs in plain terms
How expensive your move will be depends largely on the volume and the distance (from €4.20/km). The floor, lift and parking restriction zone (Halteverbotszone) also play a role. For extras such as furniture assembly or a part load, we are happy to prepare a separate quote.
