Erfurt has been the state capital of Thuringia since 1991 and, with around 217,000 inhabitants, is the largest city in the state. The old town with the Krämerbrücke, the cathedral and St Severus' Church, the Petersberg Citadel and the oldest surviving synagogue in Europe is one of the largest medieval town centres in Germany. Added to this are state authorities, the Federal Labour Court and the university. This guide shows what newcomers take care of in the first weeks: registration, flat hunting, resident parking and getting around the city.

We have no location in Erfurt; we drive in by lorry from Berlin-Moabit. That is why we clarify beforehand what matters on arrival day: the narrow lanes of the old town and the Andreasviertel, the stairwell in a period building in the Löbervorstadt, the lift in a prefab block on the Herrenberg or the Roter Berg. We apply to the city for the parking restriction outside the new address so that the removal van stands close to the entrance. For your belongings we accept liability under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre of load space; additional insurance is available on request. We coordinate the delivery day so that you can make your appointment at the Bürgeramt (registration office) within the first two weeks.

After moving into Erfurt, you register within two weeks – with an appointment at the Bürgeramt or online with BundID and the online ID function. Your landlord must certify that you have moved in with the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung). Old Town, Suburbs, Prefab Estates and Villages
Erfurt is divided into 53 districts, roughly of three types: the old town and Gründerzeit suburbs near the centre, prefab housing estates on the outskirts and incorporated villages. The Andreasviertel in the old town was due to be demolished in GDR times and was saved by citizens' protests; around the old town lie suburbs such as the Löbervorstadt, Brühlervorstadt and Krämpfervorstadt.
From 1969, Erfurt-Nord was built in the north with Rieth, Berliner Platz, Moskauer Platz and Roter Berg, and from 1979 the Herrenberg, Wiesenhügel and Melchendorf in the south-east. According to Wikipedia, affordable housing in Erfurt is found almost only in the prefab blocks on the outskirts.
Work, study and leisure
Erfurt's economy is shaped by administration and services: state authorities, the Federal Labour Court, KiKA and MDR Thüringen, as well as IT service providers such as T-Systems and DB Systel. Then there is Siemens with a generator plant, semiconductor manufacturer X-FAB with around 600 employees and a large logistics sector. The Helios hospital in the north is a maximum-care hospital. The University of Erfurt was re-founded in 1994, alongside the university of applied sciences.
In your free time there is the egapark, the Krämerbrücke festival in June and the Christmas market on Domplatz. We do not give rents without a reliable source.

Registering in Erfurt: Deadline, Documents and the Online Route for Newcomers
Anyone moving to Erfurt must register with the registration authority within two weeks of moving in. This is required by § 17 of the Federal Registration Act (Bundesmeldegesetz). The federal portal describes the procedure for Thuringia (as of 28 May 2026) as follows:
- In person: you make an appointment at the Bürgeramt and attend yourself or are represented by someone with a power of attorney. In any case, you must sign the registration form yourself.
- Documents: you need the completed and signed registration form (Meldeschein), ID card or passport and, if you rent, the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbescheinigung) from your landlord.
- Online: you need a BundID account, an ID card with the online function activated plus PIN, and a smartphone with the AusweisApp or a PC with a card reader. After the authority has checked your application, you receive an email and download the digital registration certificate from your BundID account.
The federal portal does not mention a fee for registration. The deadline is what matters: anyone who does not register within two weeks commits an administrative offence. Under § 54 of the Federal Registration Act, the fine can be up to 1,000 euros. It is therefore best to book your Bürgeramt appointment before moving day and to ask your landlord for the landlord confirmation in good time. Living in Erfurt: Landlord Confirmation, Resident Parking Permit and Parking in Residential Areas
When living in Erfurt, two documents play a major role: your landlord's confirmation and, in densely built neighbourhoods, the resident parking permit. Under § 19 of the Federal Registration Act, the landlord must cooperate with the registration. They confirm your moving in, in writing or electronically, with their name and address, the moving-in date, the address of the flat and the names of the persons required to register. If you do not receive the confirmation, or receive it too late, report this to the registration authority without delay.
For parking at your new home, the federal portal for Thuringia describes the resident parking permit (as of 17 July 2026):
- Eligible applicants are people with a main or secondary residence in a resident parking zone who actually live there.
- No private parking space may be available; the vehicle must be registered to you or be in your permanent use.
- The permit does not guarantee a fixed parking space and is limited in time.
- Among other things, you need an ID card or registration certificate, driving licence and vehicle registration certificate Part I; the fee depends on the fee schedule of the responsible authority.
