Arriving in Eisenach: Wartburg town on the Hörsel
Life by the Thuringian Forest
Eisenach lies in the Hörsel valley on the northern edge of the Thuringian Forest; above the old town stands the Wartburg castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Johann Sebastian Bach was born here in 1685, and Martin Luther went to school here. Since 2021 Eisenach has been a major district town in the Wartburgkreis and the seventh-largest municipality in Thuringia – with an industry shaped by vehicle manufacturing since 1896. This guide shows what newcomers deal with in the first few weeks: registration at the citizens' office, flat hunting, parking, city buses and the routes to work and school. You will find the city's own information further down, with opening hours and phone numbers.
We have no branch in Thuringia; we come from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21). It is around 358 km to Eisenach via the A9 and A4, about five and a half hours by lorry including a break. Whether it is a half-timbered house in the old town, a flat in a prefab estate or a house in a village such as Stedtfeld or Stregda: we plan your private move at a fixed price after a survey and, on request, reassemble furniture and the kitchen. The route is described on the page Moving Berlin – Eisenach. We are liable for damage under § 451e of the German Commercial Code (HGB); additional insurance is available.

A fixed price for your start in Eisenach
Surveyed, calculated, agreed

Quotes available individually based on workload, scheduling and the desired scope of services.

What we take care of for your start
Planned from Moabit
We have no base in Eisenach; we drive over by lorry from Berlin-Moabit. That is why we clarify in advance what matters on arrival day: narrow lanes and parking zones in the old town around the Markt, the stairwell of a half-timbered house, access in a village near the Hainich. We apply to the city for the parking restriction zone (Halteverbotszone) outside the new address. We are liable for your belongings under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre of loading space; additional insurance is available. We schedule the delivery day for your move-in, because in Eisenach you can only register after you have actually moved in.

Shared load to Eisenach
If you are moving to Eisenach for a dual study programme at the Duale Hochschule Gera-Eisenach or for your first job and are only bringing a few pieces of furniture, you can save with a shared load: your things travel together with other consignments to Thuringia. In return you need some flexibility on the delivery day.

To-dos
after moving in
According to the city, in Eisenach you can only register after you have actually moved in, and then within two weeks; the citizens' office works by appointment only. Have your landlord's confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung) ready. After that come nursery or school, a residents' parking permit and buses: three parking zones apply in the city centre, Wartburgmobil runs the 14 city bus routes, and the main station is an ICE and IC stop. If you bring a car, change the address in the vehicle documents. The sections below summarise what the city itself says – with opening hours and phone numbers.

Questions from newcomers to Eisenach
The core town and eleven villages
Eisenach consists of the core town and eleven villages: Berteroda, Göringen, Hörschel, Hötzelsroda, Madelungen, Neuenhof, Neukirchen, Stedtfeld, Stockhausen, Stregda and Wartha. In the old town around the Markt stand the Bach House, the Luther House and many half-timbered houses; in GDR times, large prefab housing estates were built alongside, for example on Goethestraße.
North of the core town, a plateau stretches to the Hainich with Hötzelsroda, Neukirchen, Madelungen and Berteroda. To the west lies Stedtfeld in the narrow Hörsel valley; at Hörschel the Hörsel flows into the Werra, and this is where the Rennsteig trail begins. To the south, the Thuringian Forest rises steeply.
Work, learning and leisure
Eisenach is an industrial town: Opel and Bosch employ over 4,000 people in car manufacturing, with Bosch Fahrzeugelektrik on the Wartenberg alone employing around 1,650. Then there are suppliers, metalworking and logistics; with 133 industrial jobs per 1,000 inhabitants, the town is well above the national average. The Duale Hochschule Gera-Eisenach offers dual study programmes in business and engineering, and the St. Georg Klinikum is the town's hospital.
In your free time, there are the Wartburg, the Bach House, the Landestheater and the 26.7-hectare city park, with the Hainich National Park to the north and the Thuringian Forest to the south. We don't quote specific rents without a reliable source.
Fair prices for every moving need
Big or small – we have the right offer for every moving need. A 1-room flat costs from €365, a 2-room flat from €584. For 3 rooms we charge from €915, for 4 rooms from €1,329. We calculate larger moves into houses or villas individually to offer you fair terms. For long-distance moves the price is from €4.10 per kilometre. It is best to arrange a free survey straight away.
How is the price composed?
First of all, the volume of your belongings counts. Then comes the distance, charged from €4.10/km. Finally, the floor, lift and any parking restriction zone play an important role. For additional services we recommend furniture assembly and a shared load.

We plan moves from Stromstraße 21 in Berlin-Moabit, to Eisenach and back. How the roughly 358 km via the A9 and A4 work is explained on the page Moving Berlin – Eisenach.
Registering in Eisenach: citizens' office appointment and the two-week deadline
The City of Eisenach states clearly that registration can only take place after you have actually moved in, usually within two weeks of moving in. This matches § 17 of the Federal Registration Act (BMG), which provides for two weeks after moving in. So registering in advance is not possible. You should nevertheless obtain your landlord's confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung) in good time.
The citizens' office works by appointment only, to avoid long waiting times. You book online via termine-reservieren.de/termine/eisenach (where information on documents and fees is shown) or by phone on 03691 670-800. You need an email address for the confirmation by email. The citizens' office is on the ground floor at the Markt and, according to the city, is open: Mondays 8 a.m. to 12 noon and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesdays 8 a.m. to 12 noon and 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., Wednesdays 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., Thursdays 8 a.m. to 12 noon and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., Fridays 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturdays 9 a.m. to 12 noon.
The booking system shows which documents you need for your matter. You will also find forms in the city's "Forms & templates" section. How a move to Eisenach works overall is explained in the Eisenach moving guide and on the Eisenach location page.
Parking, residents' parking permit and buses in Eisenach
The city distinguishes three charging zones: Zone 1 (the entire city-centre area) applies Monday to Saturday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Sundays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Zone 2 Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Zone 3 (tourist areas) daily from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. According to the city, monthly tickets cost 30 or 40 euros depending on the zone. There are multi-storey car parks "Am Markt" (252 spaces), at Sommerstraße/Uferstraße (263 spaces) and "Tor zur Stadt" at Bahnhofstraße 8 (600 spaces). You can get the Parkcard at the citizens' office. For quick errands, the city offers free 15-minute short-term parking via the "bread-roll button" (Brötchentaste) on three machines covering 17 spaces.
You apply for a residents' parking permit at the road traffic authority of the municipal public order office; the application and a declaration of use are available as PDFs on eisenach.de. Information on parking is provided by the lighting and parking team in infrastructure management, Heinrichstraße 11, on 03691 670-873.
According to the city, city bus services are provided by the transport company Wartburgmobil; there are 169 bus stops in the town and the villages. Eisenach station is an ICE stop with direct connections within Thuringia, Hesse, Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt. Long-distance coaches stop at the Uferstraße stop, about 500 m from the central bus station and the railway station. For your moving day you can also plan a parking restriction zone.
