Why Berliners move to Dessau-Roßlau – and back
A move from Berlin to Dessau-Roßlau takes you to an independent town of around 75,000 inhabitants that was formed in 2007 from Dessau and Roßlau. It is known for Walter Gropius's Bauhaus building, part of the UNESCO World Heritage since 1996, and for the Dessau-Wörlitz Garden Realm, World Heritage since 2000. For work, the German Environment Agency (Umweltbundesamt) plays a role: it has had its headquarters in the town since 2005, while a branch office remained in Berlin. Families often look for more space and to be close to the Elbe and Mulde, which meet within the town.
Conversely, many decide on a move from Dessau-Roßlau to Berlin because the capital's job market, range of degree courses and culture are larger. Via the A9 the connection is short – around an hour and a half by lorry. 124 km via the A9: route, exits and process
From Stromstraße 21 in Moabit to Dessau-Roßlau it is around 124 kilometres. Via the A100 and the AVUS (A115) we join the southern Berlin ring road (A10), at the Potsdam interchange the A9, and drive around 61 km towards Leipzig. Shortly before Dessau the A9 crosses the Elbe at Vockerode; then come Dessau-Ost (B 185) and Dessau-Süd (B 184). We reach Roßlau via Coswig (Anhalt) and the B 187. Lorries over 3.5 t drive at no more than 80 km/h, which gives us approx. 1.5 hrs – no mandatory break is needed.
On moving day we load in Berlin in the morning, secure all the furniture and set off. At the destination we unload according to a room plan so you can find your way around straight away. We drive the move from Dessau-Roßlau to Berlin in exactly the same way, via the A9 in the opposite direction. For typical flat sizes the move is completed in one day.
Arriving in Dessau-Roßlau and returning to Berlin
In the Dessau part of the town, residential areas include districts such as Ziebigk, Kochstedt, Alten, Mildensee and Waldersee; then there is Roßlau with its moated castle on the Elbe.
