From Berlin to the City of Science – and back
A move from Berlin to Darmstadt often has to do with research and studying: since 1997 the city has officially held the title of City of Science (Wissenschaftsstadt). It is home to TU Darmstadt, founded in 1877, Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences, the European Space Operations Centre ESOC, EUMETSAT and the GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research; on top of this comes the DAX company Merck. Darmstadt has around 168,000 inhabitants and lies in southern Hesse, not far from Frankfurt. We handle this move from packing in Berlin to furniture assembly in the new flat.
The move from Darmstadt to Berlin is just as much in demand, for example after studying, for a new job in the capital or because the family is moving back to Berlin. Hermsdorf interchange, Hattenbach, Frankfurt: the route
After the survey and the binding fixed price, the lorry starts in Moabit and drives via the city motorway, AVUS and Berlin ring road to the A9. It leads past Leipzig into Thuringia to the Hermsdorf interchange, where the A4 takes over heading west. Beyond Eisenach the route enters Hesse; from the Kirchheim interchange it is only a few kilometres to the Hattenbach interchange, the start of the A5. The lorry stays on it for around 144 km – via the Gambach interchange, past the Bad Homburg and Frankfurt interchanges – to the edge of Darmstadt.
Pure driving time is a good seven and a half hours, because lorries over 3.5 t may not drive faster than 80 km/h on the motorway (§ 18 para. 5 StVO). After four and a half hours a 45-minute break is mandatory (EU Regulation 561/2006) – making approx. 8.5 hrs. With loading and unloading, that becomes a very long day; whether two drivers can manage it or we plan two days, we clarify at the survey. The same calculation applies to the way back to Berlin.
Arriving in Darmstadt: from Bessungen to Wixhausen
Darmstadt is divided into nine districts. Alongside the inner-city districts with the Martinsviertel and the Johannesviertel in the north and the Mathildenhöhe in the east, these include Bessungen, Eberstadt, Kranichstein, Arheilgen and Wixhausen. The artists' colony on the Mathildenhöhe has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2021. For every address we clarify access, floor, lift and parking space at the survey and apply for the parking restriction zone via the responsible road traffic authority in Darmstadt.
