Darmstadt Guide

Arriving in the City of Science Darmstadt

The first few weeks

Unsere Firma comes from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and drives around 572 km to southern Hesse – this guide helps you settle in Darmstadt.

After Frankfurt, Wiesbaden and Kassel, Darmstadt is the fourth-largest city in Hesse and has held the title "City of Science" (Wissenschaftsstadt) since 1997. Around 50,000 students are spread across TU Darmstadt, founded in 1877, Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences, the Protestant University of Applied Sciences and the Wilhelm Büchner University of Applied Sciences. The artists' colony on the Mathildenhöhe has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2021. We plan our home removal to Darmstadt from Berlin, with packing, transport and assembly.

We give you the fixed price after a survey, and for your belongings we accept liability under the HGB. We have no branch in Hesse; instead, we come by lorry from Berlin-Moabit, around 572 km via the A9, A4 and A5. We clarify access, floor and staircase in advance – whether a period flat in the Martinsviertel, a house in Bessungen or a flat in Kranichstein. That way you can concentrate on your new life in Darmstadt. The route and journey time are described on the page Moving Berlin – Darmstadt.

What We Handle – and What Is Up to You in Darmstadt

Transport from Berlin, paperwork on your side

We come by lorry from Berlin-Moabit, around 572 km, about 8.5 hours including a break. We plan the parking restriction outside the new address in good time according to the city's requirements, and ask about the floor and carrying routes in advance. For your belongings we accept liability under the HGB (§ 451e: €620 per m³), and additional insurance is available. Registration, the resident parking permit and the bulky waste appointment with the EAD are up to you; we set the delivery day so that it fits. If the flat is not yet available, we store your belongings in between.

Packing Service

We pack in Berlin and label every box by destination room, so everything is to hand on your first evening in Darmstadt – with our packing service.

Storage

If your flat in Darmstadt only becomes available later, we store your belongings in between and deliver on handover day – with storage.

Student moves

For a room at the start of term at the TU or university of applied sciences in Darmstadt, a shared load is often enough instead of a lorry of your own – with a student move.

Furniture Transport

Wardrobes or pianos travel padded and secured, even into a period building in the Johannesviertel in Darmstadt – with our furniture transport.

Online via wohnsitzanmeldung.gov.de or by appointment at the city's registration and passport office – with ID and landlord confirmation.
02

Re-register your car

Enter the new address with the vehicle registration authority without delay (§ 15 FZV); your existing number plate can stay.
03

In the digital town hall, you apply for the resident parking permit; according to the city €30 for one, €70 for six and €120 for twelve months, valid in the zone where you live.
04

Arrange the collection date for old furniture with the EAD by phone or in the customer portal; according to the city, collection is free of charge.
05

Tram and bus

Trams and buses run by HEAG mobilo connect the districts; the main station offers regional and long-distance services.
06

Change your address everywhere

You inform your employer, bank, insurers and the broadcasting licence fee (Rundfunkbeitrag) yourself; a mail forwarding order with Deutsche Post bridges the first few months.
FOR SMALL LOADS

One Room for Darmstadt? Shared Load

A Shared Trip to Southern Hesse

For smaller amounts or students, a shared load may be a good fit: your belongings travel with other consignments heading for Rhine-Main to Darmstadt. When you enquire, we tell you whether a trip is currently planned; liability under the HGB applies here too.

What
Newcomers to Darmstadt Should Know

Authorities, routes, housing

After moving in to Darmstadt, the first two weeks count: registration online or by appointment, then car registration, the resident parking permit and bulky waste with the EAD. Note: according to the city, there are no resident parking permits in the Lincoln-Siedlung and the Ludwigshöhviertel; residents there rent spaces in the neighbourhood car park. For moving day, we advise you on the parking restriction, carrying routes in period buildings and furniture assembly. Information on home removals can be found on our service page.

Choosing a district

Nord with the Martins- and Johannesviertel, Ost with the Mathildenhöhe, Bessungen or Kranichstein: the district determines access and carrying distance for a home removal, senior move or student move in Darmstadt.

Planning moving day

Packing service, padded furniture transport and, for single items, a small transport: we clarify the parking restriction and carrying routes in advance, so the lorry in Darmstadt stands close to the door.

Businesses and special cases

For an office move, company relocation, public authority move, shared load or furniture taxi to Darmstadt, we agree fixed time windows so that your business continues quickly.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions from New Residents in Darmstadt

Registration, districts, parking, bulky waste and moving to Darmstadt – answered briefly.
The costs of a move to Darmstadt depend on the size of the flat, the floor, additional services and the route of around 572 km from Berlin. Guide prices by number of rooms are in the price overview on this page; after a survey, we give you a binding fixed price. We list a parking restriction, assembly or storage as separate items, so you know from the outset what you are paying for.

Nine Districts – Where Newcomers Live in Darmstadt

Darmstadt is divided into nine districts: Mitte, Nord with the Johannesviertel, Martinsviertel and Europaviertel, Ost with the Mathildenhöhe and Woogsviertel, Bessungen (incorporated since 1888), West with the Heimstättensiedlung, Arheilgen and Eberstadt (both since 1937), Wixhausen (since 1977) and Kranichstein, which was built from 1968 onwards. With around 32,000 inhabitants, Nord is the largest district.

On the eastern edge of the city – from the Rosenhöhe via the Mathildenhöhe and Lichtwiese to the Ludwigshöhe – lie many sought-after residential areas. We deliberately do not quote specific rents here; compare offers and start early, especially at the beginning of term. Which district suits you depends on your commute, school and connection to the tram or bus.

Working, Studying and Leisure in Darmstadt

As a City of Science, Darmstadt is home to renowned employers: Merck KGaA is a DAX company, Deutsche Telekom has its second-largest site here, and then there is Software AG. The more than 30 research institutions include the GSI Helmholtz Centre, the European Space Operations Centre ESOC, EUMETSAT and three Fraunhofer institutes. TU Darmstadt, Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences, the Protestant University of Applied Sciences and the Wilhelm Büchner University of Applied Sciences have around 50,000 students between them.

For leisure, there are the Mathildenhöhe with its artists' colony, the Großer Woog lake near the city centre, the Odenwald to the south and east and the Taunus on the horizon. Darmstadt was a royal residence and state capital from 1567 to 1945; much of its old building stock was lost in the Second World War. Via the A5 and A67, which meet at the Darmstädter Kreuz interchange, Frankfurt and Mannheim are quickly reached. As a regional centre, Darmstadt also serves the districts of Darmstadt-Dieburg and Groß-Gerau – many residents commute within the region.

From Berlin to Southern Hesse – and Back

We plan moves from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21), without other branches. Darmstadt is around 572 km away, about 8.5 hours by lorry including a break. Places with their own page can be found in the locations overview, long routes under long-distance moves.

Registration in Darmstadt: Deadline, Booking an Appointment and Online Registration

In Darmstadt, too, § 17 of the Federal Registration Act applies: you must register within two weeks of moving in. Your landlord confirms the move-in under § 19 of the same act with the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung), which states the move-in date, the address of the flat and the names of everyone required to register.

On its website, the City of Science Darmstadt refers to two routes. Firstly, there is electronic registration and re-registration of your residence via the portal wohnsitzanmeldung.gov.de. Secondly, the city allocates appointments for the registration and passport office via an online system. There you can choose, among other things, "Anmeldung (Einzelperson)" (individual registration) and "Anmeldung (Familie)" (family registration); for family registration, you enter the number of families, not the number of people. A maximum of ten matters can be selected per booking.

The option "Änderung KFZ-Schein bei Ummeldung" (updating the vehicle registration when re-registering) is practical. According to the booking system, it only applies to a move within Darmstadt and only if no change has yet been made. Book early enough so that the appointment falls within the two-week deadline. The registration and passport office also handles ID applications; since 1 May 2025, only digital photos have been accepted for these. Read more about the city and the process of your move on the Darmstadt location page and in the Darmstadt moving guide.

Resident Parking Permit and Bulky Waste in Darmstadt

If you live in a zone with parking management, you can apply for a resident parking permit. According to the City of Science Darmstadt, it applies to the zone where you live, there is only one permit per registered person, and the vehicle must be registered to the applicant. You apply online in the digital town hall and print the permit yourself. You need the vehicle registration certificate and your identity card or passport. The city states fees of €30 for one month, €70 for six months and €120 for twelve months; a change after a move or a new number plate costs €15. There are no resident parking permits in the Lincoln-Siedlung and the Ludwigshöhviertel; residents there rent a space in the neighbourhood car park.

For Bessungen Süd (zone BE3), the city gives 19.10.2026 as the start of parking management. Bulky waste is collected free of charge by the municipal waste company EAD. Arrange the date on 06151 / 13 46 000 or in the EAD customer portal. Put the items out at the kerbside by 6 am on collection day, at the earliest from 6 pm the day before; each item should weigh less than 100 kg. Permanently installed parts such as windows, doors or laminate are not collected. You can drop them off at the recycling centre at Sensfelderweg 33. For a household clearance, our house clearance service can help.

Always one step ahead.
