From Berlin to Hanau
Moving to Hanau: Brothers Grimm City on the Main and Kinzig
Guide
A move to Hanau takes you to the sixth-largest city in Hesse, located in the east of the Rhine-Main region where the Kinzig flows into the Main. Since 2006 Hanau has carried the epithet "Brothers Grimm City". The city centre was rebuilt in a much altered form after the air raids of 1944/45; half-timbering, by contrast, can be found in the old towns of Steinheim and Kesselstadt, plus Philippsruhe Palace on the Main. For your private move we clarify access, floor and parking space in advance.
We start in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive the lorry around 544 km via the A9, A4, A7 and A66 to Hanau; including the statutory break that is about 8 hours, usually over two days with loading and unloading. Whether you are moving from Berlin to Hanau or back to Berlin, we quote the fixed price after a survey. In Hanau you register within two weeks of moving in (§ 17 BMG); your landlord issues the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung). More on this under Moving Berlin – Hanau.

What we take care of when you move to Hanau
Planning in Berlin, arrival in Hanau
We have no branch in Hanau; we come by lorry from Berlin-Moabit. That is why we ask about access, floor and staircase in advance – whether it is a half-timbered house in Steinheim or a flat in the city centre. In Hanau the parking restriction is ordered by the road traffic authority in the public order office (Ordnungsamt); according to the city, the signs must be in place at least 72 hours beforehand. We quote the fixed price after the survey; we are liable for your belongings under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre. For your private move we coordinate the date with the flat handover.

Part load – the clever solution
For smaller volumes or single items, a part load to Hanau can be cheaper: your belongings share the loading space with other consignments on the same route towards Rhine-Main. For this you need some flexibility on the delivery day – handy if only a few items are to follow.

Moving
& transport from one provider
A move to Hanau raises many questions: which district suits you, who orders the parking restriction, how far in advance must the signs be up and what changes with residents' parking? This guide presents the ten districts, from the city centre via Kesselstadt and Lamboy to Großauheim, Steinheim and Mittelbuchen, and sums up what the city of Hanau says about parking restrictions. On top of that comes the journey of around 544 km from Berlin. That way you are prepared before the first box is packed.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Hanau
The ten districts of Hanau
Hanau is divided into ten districts: Innenstadt, Kesselstadt, Nordwest, Lamboy, Südost, Wolfgang, Mittelbuchen, Großauheim, Klein-Auheim and Steinheim. Steinheim and Klein-Auheim lie on the left bank of the Main, all the others on the right. The city centre, made up of the old and new towns, was rebuilt after 1945; in Steinheim and Kesselstadt the old half-timbered cores have survived.
Wolfgang was formerly the site of the US garrison, and Mittelbuchen is the smallest district by population. For a move this means very different conditions: narrow lanes and half-timbered staircases in the old town cores, multi-storey residential buildings in the city centre, detached houses on the outskirts. We clarify floor, stairwell and parking space during the survey. Our private move service adapts to it.
Brothers Grimm, the Main and the Bulau
Hanau is the smallest independent city in Hesse and belongs to the Darmstadt administrative region and the Frankfurt conurbation. The former residence of the Counts of Hanau is today the economic and cultural centre of the Main-Kinzig region and a location for industry and technology. We do not quote specific rents – they depend heavily on location and condition.
The brothers Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm were born in Hanau; that is why the city has carried the addition "Brothers Grimm City" since 2006. Around the city lies the Bulau forest belt, and on the Main the Baroque Philippsruhe Palace in Kesselstadt. If you are arriving to start a job in the Rhine-Main region, fix the moving day early so that the parking restriction and registration fit into the first two weeks. Long routes from Berlin can be found under Long-distance moves.
The moving price guide for your planning
To help you plan your move well, here are the key figures: 1 room from €369, 2 rooms from €615, 3 rooms from €879 and 4 rooms from €1,329. For a house or a villa we always prepare an individual quote, as many factors come into play here. If you are moving further away, a price from €4.10 per kilometre applies to long-distance moves. The quickest route is a free survey.
Transparent moving costs – these factors count
We calculate the price based on volume, distance (from €4.10/km), floor and lift. An organised parking restriction zone makes loading and unloading easier. Can also be booked: furniture assembly and part loads.

Applying for a parking restriction in Hanau: authority, deadline and signs
In Hanau, the road traffic authority in the public order office (Ordnungsamt) orders parking restrictions for removals (Steinheimer Straße 1b, 63450 Hanau, email [email protected], telephone 06181 2950-2113). In addition to the PDF form, the city also offers an online service at halteverbot.hanau.de. The form explicitly lists "carrying out a move" (Durchführung eines Umzugs) as a reason for putting up the signs.
For the fee, the city's form states 20.00 euros for the first day and 5.00 euros for each additional day. According to the form, obtaining, putting up, maintaining and removing the signs is the applicant's responsibility. You can get them from traffic safety companies or from the municipal depot, Hanau Infrastruktur Service.
- Deadline: the signs must be in place at least 72 hours before the event; the day they are put up does not count.
- Additional sign: an additional sign must indicate the start of the traffic restriction.
- Length: from a parking restriction length of 30 metres, sign 283-30 StVO must also be put up.
- Carriageway: a remaining carriageway width of at least 3.05 metres must be left.
- Proof: document the set-up with date and time and keep a list of the number plates of vehicles parked there beforehand.
So plan to put up the signs at least four days before the move. How we organise this for you can be read under Parking restriction zone.
Hanau's districts, registration and residents' parking
Hanau's districts outside the core city include Steinheim, Klein-Auheim, Großauheim, Wolfgang, Mittelbuchen and Kesselstadt. Großauheim is considered the largest district and Mittelbuchen the oldest. Wolfgang was formerly a US Army barracks site. Kesselstadt was a farming and fishing village right on the Main and was incorporated on 1 April 1907; the historic village centre has many half-timbered houses, and the Weststadt estate was built west of Burgallee in the 1960s and 1970s.
Registration rules apply nationwide: after moving in, you have two weeks (§ 17 of the Federal Registration Act). In Hanau you do this at the city-centre citizens' service office in the City-Center (Kurt-Blaum-Platz 8). An appointment is required for a personal visit, which you book online at tevis.ekom21.de/hau/. The city offers registration, a change of address within Hanau and deregistration as separate services.
If you own a car, also think about the residents' parking permit: new permits and renewals can be done online, but according to the city, changing the residents' parking area after a move is currently only possible in person at the city or district service shop (Stadt(teil)laden). You book bulky waste collection via the city's online service. According to the city, if you have questions about moving to Hanau, you can also contact the Stadtladen or one of the district shops.
