Hanau for New Residents
Hanau: the Main, the Kinzig and Half-Timbering in Steinheim and Kesselstadt
Settling in, not just moving
Hanau is an independent city with almost 99,000 inhabitants in the Darmstadt administrative region and the sixth-largest city in Hesse. It lies where the Kinzig flows into the Main, in the east of the Rhine-Main area. Since 2006 it has carried the title Brothers Grimm Town (Brüder-Grimm-Stadt), because Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm were born here. The S-Bahn lines S8 and S9 run to Frankfurt; the A 45 and A 66 motorways meet at the Hanau interchange.
The city centre was almost completely destroyed in 1944/45 and rebuilt after the war; today half-timbered buildings are found mainly in Steinheim and Kesselstadt, along with Philippsruhe Palace on the Main and the Wilhelmsbad spa complex. We are a moving company from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21), not from Hanau. Our page Moving Berlin – Hanau describes the route from Berlin – around 544 km via the A9, A4, A7 and A66.

Moving to Hanau: Request a Fixed Price After a Survey
After a survey, liability under the German Commercial Code (HGB)
We come from Berlin-Moabit and are not a Hanau-based firm – which is why we clarify access, floor and parking for the lorry with you in advance, whether in the city centre, in Großauheim or in a half-timbered lane in Steinheim. On 01625978461 we advise you on your private move to Hanau. After the survey we give you a binding fixed price; your belongings are covered under the HGB.
Quotes available individually based on workload, scheduling and the desired scope of services.

What We Clarify Before Your Move to Hanau
Access, floor, parking restriction
We do not know every street in Hanau – so before moving day we ask specific questions: how wide is the access, is there a lift, does the lorry need a parking restriction zone? In half-timbered old towns such as Steinheim or Kesselstadt we allow more time for stairs. Your belongings are covered under the HGB (§ 451e: €620 per m³), and additional insurance is available on request. We give the price after the survey as a fixed price.

Hanau
for Newcomers
If you are moving to Hanau, you first choose a location: the city centre rebuilt after the war, Kesselstadt on the Main, Großauheim, Mittelbuchen, or Steinheim and Klein-Auheim on the left bank of the Main. Your S-Bahn stop, route to school and carrying route on moving day depend on this. For registration you need an appointment at the citizen service centre, and you register bulky waste online. On request we take care of the parking restriction zone, furniture assembly and – if the flat is not yet available – storage.

Frequently Asked Questions from Newcomers in Hanau
Ten Districts: Where Newcomers Live in Hanau
Hanau is divided into ten districts. The city centre, with Freiheitsplatz and the market square, was rebuilt after the air raids of 1944/45 and has been modernised in recent years. Kesselstadt lies on the Main west of the centre, with an old half-timbered core and Philippsruhe Palace; the Lamboyviertel used to have barracks, and after the war the US Army used the site.
On the left bank of the Main lie Steinheim, with its half-timbered old town and the Schloss Steinheim museum, and Klein-Auheim. There are also districts such as Großauheim, Mittelbuchen and Wolfgang. The city presents several districts in their own profiles on its website. Which location suits you depends on your commute, the S-Bahn and schools – we plan vehicle and team to suit the address. Let us know if access is narrow or the building has no lift – we clarify this before moving day.
In church terms, the districts on the right bank of the Main belong to Kurhessen-Waldeck, while Steinheim and Klein-Auheim on the left bank belong to the Protestant Church in Hesse and Nassau – important if you are looking for your parish.

Registering in Hanau: Deadline, Landlord Confirmation and Citizen Service Centre
If you move into a flat in Hanau, under § 17(1) of the Federal Registration Act (Bundesmeldegesetz) you must register with the registration authority within two weeks of moving in. In Hanau, this is handled by the Bürgerservicestelle Innenstadt (city centre citizen service centre) in the City-Center at Kurt-Blaum-Platz 8. According to the city of Hanau, it processes registration of residence, deregistration, changes of address within Hanau and switching between main and secondary residence.
For a personal visit you need an appointment. According to the city, you book it in the online calendar at tevis.ekom21.de/hau/ or by phone. For questions about moving to the city, the city also names the Stadtladen and the district offices (Stadtteilläden). Many matters can be started online via hanau-digital.de. According to the city, the citizen service centre covers more than 50 services, from registration and passports and ID cards to vehicle registration and driving licences; for people with reduced mobility there is the BürgerservicePLUS service.
Your landlord must cooperate with the registration. Under § 19 of the Federal Registration Act, the landlord issues a confirmation, which must contain:
- the name and address of the landlord and, if they are not the owner, the owner's name as well
- the move-in date
- the address of the flat
- the names of the persons required to register
The city's page on moving to Hanau does not say which other documents the office requires; ask when you book your appointment. Everything else about the city is on our page Moving in Hanau.
Hanau's Districts and Bulky Waste: Steinheim, Kesselstadt and the Recycling Centre
On its website, the city of Hanau presents the districts of Großauheim, Kesselstadt, Klein-Auheim, Mittelbuchen, Steinheim am Main and Wolfgang. Two examples from these profiles:
- Kesselstadt, according to the city, lies on the Main, a good kilometre west of the city centre. The village became part of Hanau on 1 April 1907, and the old core has many half-timbered houses. The Weststadt estate was built in the 1960s and 1970s, and Philippsruhe Palace stands on the bank of the Main.
- Steinheim am Main is the south-westernmost district. It was incorporated on 1 July 1974, received town rights in 1320, and its castle is first mentioned in 1222. The old town is known for its half-timbered houses, and the Schloss Steinheim museum shows regional archaeology and local history.
For the time after moving in: according to the city of Hanau, you apply for bulky waste collection via the online service at digital.hanau.de. Collection dates for your street are in the waste calendar (Müllmax); the city page does not give prices. The responsible body is Hanau Infrastruktur Service (HIS). The new recycling centre is at Benzstraße 8-12, 63457 Hanau; garden waste is accepted at the city's green waste drop-off points.
For the removal van right outside the building, a parking restriction zone often makes sense. Which districts suit families or commuters is discussed in the Hanau moving guide.
