Berlin–Basel: moving to the Rhine bend via customs at Weil

Moving company Berlin
Via the A5 to the Rhine: your move Berlin ↔ Basel
All the way to the border triangle
A move from Berlin to Basel ends at a customs border: Switzerland is not part of the EU customs union, so your household goods are declared as removal goods (Übersiedlungsgut) with form 18.44 and an inventory list. We come from Berlin – our base is Stromstraße 21 in Moabit – and drive with the same team to your Basel address, whether in Grossbasel or Kleinbasel. At the survey we record the volume, go through the inventory list and set the fixed price in writing. On request we also plan packing, furniture assembly and interim storage.
The roughly 867 kilometres run almost entirely on the motorway: the A9 to the Hermsdorfer Kreuz, the A4 past Erfurt and Eisenach, then the A5 from Frankfurt to the border. At approx. 13 h by lorry including breaks, the route exceeds one driver's daily driving time under EU Regulation 561/2006 – we drive with two drivers or over two days. In Switzerland a night-time driving ban from 10 pm to 5 am applies to lorries over 3.5 t. Our liability is governed by the German Commercial Code (HGB; § 451e: €620 per cubic metre), and higher cover is possible – also for a move from Basel to Berlin.

One team from the Spree to the Rhine
Via the A4 and A5 to the border triangle – and back
Basel borders Germany and France – yet for your household goods the Swiss border is still a customs border. We go through the inventory list, form 18.44 and the proof of your change of residence with you in advance and schedule the border crossing within the opening hours for commercial goods. We come from Berlin (Stromstraße 21), drive the roughly 867 kilometres with two drivers or an overnight stop and unload directly at your Basel address – or drive the route back to Berlin. The fixed price is set after the survey, and liability is governed by the German Commercial Code (HGB).

Move
planning Berlin ↔ Basel
Before the move to Basel we clarify what is required at the border: the inventory list for the removal goods (furniture, valuables and large appliances individually, boxes grouped together), form 18.44 and documents such as an employment or tenancy contract. Then there is the parking restriction from the Berlin district office, a reserved parking space outside your Basel address, a furniture lift for narrow stairwells and interim storage if handover dates are some time apart. After moving in, you register with the Basel-Stadt residents' office (Einwohneramt) within 14 days.

Questions about the route via the A5
To Basel and back: what the customs border changes
Anyone moving from Berlin to Basel is moving to Switzerland and so to a country outside the EU customs union – even though the city borders Germany and France directly. Household goods that you have used yourself for at least six months and will continue to use in Switzerland can be imported duty-free as removal goods. For this you need the completed and signed form 18.44, an inventory list and proof of your change of residence, such as an employment or tenancy contract. We handle the logistics from your Berlin flat to the Basel address, including furniture assembly.
Anyone moving back from Basel to Berlin crosses the border from the other side: for export you submit the list of household goods with your Basel and Berlin addresses to Swiss customs; after crossing the border, the goods are declared to German customs. For this too we give you a fixed price after the survey; liability under the German Commercial Code (HGB), with higher cover on request.
Route and process: around 867 km via the A4 and A5
From Moabit we take the AVUS (A115) and the A10 onto the A9 heading south to the Hermsdorfer Kreuz. There we switch to the A4 heading west, past Erfurt and Eisenach to the Kirchheim interchange, and then drive on the A5 via Frankfurt, Karlsruhe and Freiburg to Weil am Rhein. The A5 ends at the joint customs facility operated by German and Swiss customs together; across the border bridge, Basel's urban motorway leads to Kleinhüningen. Around 867 km in total, approx. 13 h by lorry including breaks.
On German motorways a speed limit of 80 km/h applies to lorries over 3.5 t (§ 18 para. 5 StVO), and after 4.5 hours at the wheel a 45-minute break is mandatory (EU Regulation 561/2006). Because the route to the Rhine is longer than one driving day, two drivers take turns or the lorry stops overnight before Weil am Rhein. In Switzerland lorries over 3.5 t may not drive from 10 pm to 5 am, so we arrive during the day. The return move follows the same route in the opposite direction.
Arriving in Basel, going back to Berlin: registration and access
Anyone moving from abroad to the canton of Basel-Stadt registers with the residents' office (Einwohneramt) within 14 days; anyone moving to Riehen or Bettingen registers with the local municipal administration there. Basel itself is divided by the Rhine into Grossbasel and Kleinbasel, linked among others by the Mittlere Brücke; 19 quarters range from Gundeldingen and St. Johann to Kleinhüningen, and the city centre is largely free of car traffic. What counts for us is the exact address: we check access, parking for the lorry, floor and stairwell in advance and coordinate moving day with the flat handover and the border crossing.
In Berlin you have two weeks after moving in to go to the citizens' office (Bürgeramt); an ID and the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung) are enough. We apply to the district office for the parking restriction outside your Berlin door, and the signs go up at least three full days beforehand. You hand over the Basel flat as soon as everything is loaded – if dates slip, your belongings go into storage in Berlin.
Price ranges for a move to the Rhine
Whether a move from Berlin to Basel or the way back from the Rhine to Berlin: these ranges give an initial indication. We calculate the binding price after the survey:
| Flat size | Cubic metres | Price from |
|---|---|---|
| 1 room | 10–15 m³ | from €350 |
| 2 rooms | 20–25 m³ | from €590 |
| 3 rooms | 30–40 m³ | from €890 |
| 4 rooms | 45–60 m³ | from €1,290 |
| House / villa | from 60 m³ | by arrangement |
For the roughly 867 km to the border triangle the guide price is from €3,310, whichever direction. LSVA, customs clearance and a second driver or overnight stay are listed individually in the quote. The amount becomes fixed after a free survey.
What makes up the price for Berlin–Basel
The volume is decisive. For Basel there are also the 867 kilometres – only a few of them on the Swiss side, so the LSVA is correspondingly small – plus customs clearance and the second driver or overnight stay. The floor, lift and extras such as furniture assembly or a cordoned-off parking space also count. With few belongings, a shared load saves money.
