To Frauenfeld and back: moving across the Swiss customs border
Anyone moving from Berlin to Frauenfeld moves their residence to the canton of Thurgau and thus to a country outside the EU customs union. Route and process: around 818 km via Lindau and St. Gallen
From Moabit we take the A9 towards Nuremberg, switch to the A6 as far as the Feuchtwangen/Crailsheim interchange and take the A7 (148 km) to Memmingen and the A96 (64 km) to Lindau. In Austria the A14 leads through the Pfänder Tunnel past Bregenz, via Lustenau into the St. Gallen Rhine Valley and on the Swiss A1 via St. Gallen to the Matzingen junction on the southern edge of Frauenfeld. Total: around 818 km, approx. 12.5 hrs lorry driving time with breaks.
Lorries over 3.5 t may drive at no more than 80 km/h on German motorways (§ 18 (5) StVO); after 4.5 hours of driving time at the latest, a 45-minute break follows (EU Regulation 561/2006). Because the route to Lake Constance and on to Thurgau is longer than one day's driving time, two drivers take turns or the lorry stays overnight. On Swiss roads it stands still between 10 pm and 5 am.
