Long-distance move to Frauenfeld: 818 km, one customs border

Route, customs, deadlines

Unsere Firma comes from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and drives around 818 km via the A9, A6, A7 and A96 to Lake Constance and on into Thurgau.

A move to Switzerland takes you out of the EU: your household goods are declared at the border as removal goods (Übersiedlungsgut). They are duty-free if you move your residence to Frauenfeld and have used the items abroad for at least six months. For this you need the signed form 18.44, an inventory list and proof such as an employment or tenancy contract. Frauenfeld is the capital of the canton of Thurgau. More on cross-border moves can be found under International moving.

We come from Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive our lorry around 818 km via the A9, A6, A7 and A96 to Lake Constance and on to Frauenfeld. Including breaks, that is about 12.5 hours – more than one day's driving time, so with two drivers or an overnight stop. Customs clearance is only possible on working days during the customs office's opening hours; we plan the journey around this. The route is described in detail on the page Moving Berlin – Frauenfeld.

FAQ

Common questions

Customs, registration, duration, costs, health insurance, car and liability – answered briefly.
For customs you need the completed and signed form 18.44, an inventory list of your household goods and proof of the change of residence, such as a deregistration certificate and employment and tenancy contracts in Frauenfeld. Plus your passport or identity card. The customs office decides whether the documents are sufficient; we go through the list with you during the survey.

Customs and import rules for a move to Frauenfeld

As Switzerland is not part of the EU, your household goods are declared at the border on a move to Switzerland. They remain duty-free as removal goods (Übersiedlungsgut) if you move your residence to Switzerland and have used the items abroad for at least six months. You present the completed and signed customs form 18.44, an inventory list and proof of the change of residence, such as a deregistration certificate and employment and tenancy contracts in Frauenfeld.

Anything that does not meet this condition is listed separately as dutiable goods with its value; alcoholic drinks and other restricted goods are listed separately. You sign form 18.44 yourself; we put the inventory list together with you during the survey. Household goods are cleared Monday to Friday during the customs office's opening hours.

Long routes from Berlin

We plan moves from Berlin (Stromstraße 21), within Germany and abroad, including to Switzerland. How we plan long routes with driving times and breaks is explained under Long-distance moves; places with their own pages can be found in the locations overview.

Frauenfeld: public land and responsibilities

If the removal lorry uses public land on moving day, it pays to contact the city early. According to the city of Frauenfeld, use of public land requires prior authorisation; you can find the application form on the city chancellery's page "Nutzung des öffentlichen Grundes" (use of public land). The Security department (Marktstrasse 4, 8500 Frauenfeld) decides on a case-by-case basis.

For construction site set-ups and road closures, the city names the Works Depot and Urban Green department, Gaswerkstrasse 16, 8500 Frauenfeld. The page gives no fee amounts or deadline; it refers to the municipal fee ordinance (SR 631.1.11). The city does not expressly describe a parking ban for moves there. So ask the administration which office is responsible for your street: telephone 052 724 51 11.

You can also find information on public parking on the city's page "Öffentliche Parkierungen" (public parking). Submit your application early, because the city does not state a processing time. When scheduling, clarify whether your removal van can stop directly in front of the building or whether a short walk to the building needs to be planned.

On customs and entry, read our article Moving to Switzerland: customs, formalities and process; neighbourhoods and everyday life are described in the guide Moving to Frauenfeld.

Frauenfeld: residents' services and registration

You report your move to the residents' services at Rathausplatz 4, 8501 Frauenfeld, telephone 052 724 52 74. The city states the statutory deadline of 14 days for this. This applies to moving in as well as to moving away and changes of address within Frauenfeld.

If you are moving from abroad, the city says you must register in person at the counter. Bring a valid passport or identity card; a tenancy agreement may also be required. Further documents are set out in the information sheet of the Thurgau migration office (migrationsamt.tg.ch). According to the city, registration costs 30 francs. Further costs are charged for processing and issuing the residence permit, the amount of which the city does not state on this page.

The residents' services handle registration, deregistration and changes of address within Frauenfeld under the heading "Umzugsmeldungen" (moving notifications). For residence matters of foreign nationals, the city links to its own permit applications; the online services as well as the administration's locations and opening hours are on frauenfeld.ch. You can reach the residents' services by phone on 052 724 52 74, or in person at Rathausplatz 4 in 8501 Frauenfeld. Plan your visit to the authorities early and check the information sheet in advance so that nothing is missing. If you would like to get to know Frauenfeld better, you will find further tips in the article Living in Frauenfeld.
