Long-distance move Berlin – Mons: Route Process & Schedule

From Berlin to Mons
Long-distance move to Mons – 814 km to the capital of Hainaut
Guide
A move to Mons (Bergen in German) takes you to the capital of the Walloon province of Hainaut, a mainly French-speaking city with NATO headquarters SHAPE on its territory. Because Belgium is part of the EU, there are no customs formalities for your household goods. More important are the police order for the removal van, the delivery times in the pedestrian zone and registration. What we take care of for private moves is listed under Private move.
We come from Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive around 814 km via the A2, A1 and A4 to Aachen and, in Belgium, via the E40 and the E42. By lorry that is about 12.5 hours including breaks – more than one day's driving time, so we plan two to three days with an overnight stop or two drivers. We quote the fixed price after the survey. Common questions
No customs, but deadlines: formalities when moving to Belgium
Belgium is an EU member, so your belongings do not have to be declared at customs; proof of origin is not needed for used household goods. What matters are the registration obligations: in Berlin you deregister if you are not moving into a new home in Germany – within two weeks of moving out (§ 17 (2) BMG). In Belgium you declare your residence with the municipality, according to the Federal Ministry of the Interior within eight working days of moving in.
In Mons the town hall on the Grand-Place is responsible for this; for EU citizens moving to Belgium for the first time, the Service des Étrangers (foreigners' department) at the same address. Under EU law you do not need a residence document in the first three months; your EU driving licence remains valid. A car that is used permanently in Belgium must be registered there.
Route, driving time and access to the city centre
The route runs via the A2 into the Ruhr area, via the A1 and A4 to Aachen and, in Belgium, via the E40 to Liège and along the E42 past Namur and Charleroi to Mons. With around 814 km and about 12.5 hours of driving time including breaks, we plan two to three days including loading and unloading. For lorries over 3.5 tonnes, Viapass charges a kilometre levy in Wallonia on the roads managed by SOFICO.
The city centre sits in an almost circular shape on a hill between the Haine and the Trouille, surrounded by the small R50 ring road. Several streets are reserved for pedestrians; according to the city, deliveries are only allowed there at fixed times. Which vehicle is suitable and where it can stop is clarified during the survey.

Mons: police order for removal vans and parking restriction
Anyone carrying out a move on the street in Mons needs, according to the City of Mons, a police order (Arrêté de Police), as with deliveries and building works that occupy the street. The application goes to the Gestion de l'Espace Public (public space management) department of the Mons-Quévy police zone. The city requires at least 15 working days between the application and the start of the measure, so allow a good three weeks' lead time. The form is available in French and, for English-speaking applicants, also in English; it should be filled in completely.
- Email: [email protected]
- Telephone: 065 97 91 30
- in person at the police station, where the form is also available
The procedure does not exempt you from the local parking rules. The city also offers private individuals to put up no-parking signs; the conditions are set out in a separate document. The page does not mention fees, so ask the city about them (Hôtel de Ville, Grand-Place 22, tel. +32 (0)65 40 51 11).
On the route, the Viapass kilometre levy applies in Belgium to goods vehicles over 3.5 tonnes. According to Viapass, it covers roads in the Flemish and Brussels regions as well as roads managed by SOFICO in Wallonia. Further guidance under International move and in the Mons moving guide.
Mons: pedestrian zone, delivery times and registration
The centre of Mons is closed to cars in several places; the city also describes it as a shared space (zone de rencontre) where cars and pedestrians share the street. According to the city, the Rue de la Chaussée, the Grand'Rue (between Rue des Fripiers and Rue de la Petite Boucherie), the Rue des Fripiers (between Rue de la Chaussée and Rue Notre Dame), the Rue de la Coupe and the Rue de la Poterie remain reserved exclusively for pedestrians. In the pedestrian zone and on the Grand-Place, deliveries are possible between 6.30 and 10.30 am and between 6.30 and 8.00 pm. The Rue de Nimy and the Rue d'Havré are limited to vehicles up to 10 metres long. Further delivery zones are shown on a map to which the city refers.
For your change of registration, the City of Mons names the town hall as the point of contact (Hôtel de Ville, Grand-Place 22, tel. +32 (0)65 40 51 11). The change request is available via the city's electronic counter; for EU citizens moving to Belgium for the first time, the Service des Étrangers is responsible, which can be reached at the same address. Opening hours are at mons.be/fr/je-trouve/horaires.
