Long-distance move to Chur: from Moabit to the Graubünden Alps

explained in brief

Unsere Firma brings your household goods from Berlin-Moabit via Lindau and the Rhine Valley to Chur – around 816 km, one team from loading to assembly.

A move to Chur takes you out of the EU and into Switzerland: your household goods are declared at the border as household removal goods (Übersiedlungsgut) using form 18.44, which is free of duty if you are moving your residence and have used the items yourself for at least six months. Chur is the capital of Graubünden on the Alpine Rhine; the old town may only be driven into with a driving permit. Under Long-distance moves you will find our other routes. We take care of planning, packing, transport, the customs appointment and assembly.

We come from Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive our lorry around 816 km via Lindau and the Rhine Valley to Chur; that is roughly 12.5 hours including breaks – which is why we use two drivers or an overnight stop. For Switzerland, you declare your household goods as household removal goods using form 18.44; within the EU there would be no customs formalities. Whether you are moving from Berlin to Chur or from Chur back to Berlin: we quote the fixed price after a survey. Read more about quarters and everyday life in the Chur moving guide.

FROM MOABIT

Our part of your move to Chur

Planned in Berlin, arriving in Graubünden

We have no branch in Chur; instead we come by lorry from Berlin-Moabit. That is why we ask about access, floor and stairwell in advance – whether it is an older building in the old town, a flat in Masans or a house on Rosenhügel. We apply in good time for permission to stop outside the new address, following the City of Chur's rules. We quote the fixed price after the survey; for your household goods we are liable under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre. For your private move we coordinate the date with the handover of your flat.

Packing service

We pack crockery, books and electronics so they survive the roughly 816 km and label every box by its destination room in Chur – with our packing service.

Office move

Files, IT and workstations move to a fixed schedule so that business in Chur carries on quickly – with an office move.

Senior moves

When parents move to Chur to be near their children, we allow plenty of time and set the furniture up again on arrival day in Chur – with a senior move.

Furniture transport

A piano or display cabinet travels padded and secured, even to an old-town house near the cathedral in Chur – with furniture transport.
FIXED PRICE AFTER A SURVEY

We ask about floor, lift and carrying distances in advance – whether an older building in the old town or a house on Rosenhügel – so that enough porters are scheduled in Chur.
03

Parking at the door

We apply for permission to stop in good time, following the City of Chur's rules, so that the removal van can park close to your new flat.
04

We plan backwards from move-in day: notice in Berlin, packing dates, parking permit and departure timed to match the handover in Chur.
05

Storage to bridge a gap

If your flat in Chur is not yet free, we put your belongings into interim storage and deliver on the new date.
06

Ready to settle in

FOR SMALL LOADS

Save with a part load

Small move, small price

For smaller volumes or single items, a part load (Beiladung) to Chur can be cheaper: your goods share the load space with other consignments on the same route. In return you need a little flexibility on the delivery day; whether a run towards Chur is coming up, we will tell you after your enquiry. It is also handy if a few items need to follow after the main move.

Well planned and reliable

A long-distance move to Switzerland involves more than transport: customs clearance as household removal goods with form 18.44 during the customs office's opening hours, deregistration in Germany, registration in Chur within 14 days and health insurance within three months all have to fit together. On top of that come around 816 km of driving with driving-time limits, the Sunday driving ban in Germany and tolls. An inventory list sorted by room helps at customs and when unloading. That way your move to Chur runs without idle time.

Planning safely and calmly

With a schedule worked backwards from move-in day – notice, parking permit, packing dates – your private move, senior move or student move to Chur stays manageable, even over around 816 km.

Furniture, boxes, carrying routes

Packing service, padded furniture transport and a free stopping space ensure that furniture arrives without long carrying distances, even at an old-town house near the cathedral in Chur; single items travel as a small transport.

Costs, timing and special cases

Costs depend on volume, floor and the route of around 816 km; for small volumes a part load lowers the price. For an office move, business move or furniture taxi to Chur we agree fixed time windows.

FAQ

Common questions

Customs, residence, registration, car, route and liability – answered in brief.
For a move to Switzerland you need form 18.44 “Übersiedlungsgut” (household removal goods) and an inventory list. You also prove the change of residence, for example with an employment or tenancy contract or a deregistration certificate. Customs clearance takes place at the border customs office during its opening hours for commercial goods. We quote the fixed price for your move to Chur after a survey.

Customs and formalities when moving to Switzerland

As Switzerland is not part of the EU, you declare your household goods at the border when moving to Chur. For the duty-free import of household goods there is form 18.44 from the Federal Office for Customs and Border Security (BAZG). You also need an inventory list and proof of the change of residence, such as an employment or tenancy contract or the deregistration certificate. Anything you have used yourself for at least six months and will continue to use is free of duty.

Besides the customs declaration, further formalities must be observed: registration with the residents' services in Chur within 14 days, the residence permit and compulsory health insurance within three months. A car you bring with you counts as household removal goods under the same conditions, but must be inspected and registered in Switzerland. That way your long-distance move runs without a missed deadline.

Costs and process of a move to Chur

Moving costs to Chur are made up of distance, volume, floor and additional services such as packing or furniture assembly; no customs duties apply to household removal goods if the conditions are met. We quote the fixed price after a survey, with additional services listed as separate items. For smaller households a part load (Beiladung) is often worthwhile.

The process: survey, inventory list and form 18.44, packing and loading in Berlin, then around 816 km via Lindau and the Rhine Valley with customs clearance during the customs office's opening hours. In Chur, delivery and furniture assembly in your new flat follow; for the old town we apply for the driving permit in advance.

Chur: old town, loading and unloading, and the driving permit

Chur's old town is a pedestrian zone. According to the City of Chur, vehicles may only enter for loading and unloading goods, namely Monday to Friday between 6.30 and 11.30 and on Saturday between 6.30 and 9.00. Walking pace applies, pedestrians have priority, and vehicles must enter and leave by the shortest route. Parking in the zone is generally only permitted for loading and unloading.

Anyone who needs to drive into the old town outside these times requires a special permit. For this the city names the city police counter; permits subject to a fee can also be ordered online via bewilligungen.chur.ch, with payment by credit card or Twint. Unused day permits are not refunded.

For a no-parking zone on moving day, the city's parking page does not describe a separate procedure. Information is provided by the Support and Trade Police, Kornplatz 10, telephone 081 254 54 54. Ask there early whether signage is needed for your address.

If you bring a car: vehicles that stand overnight on public roads or car parks need a permit according to the city (CHF 50 per month, available at the city police counter). More on formalities can be found in our article Moving to Switzerland: customs, formalities and process.

Chur: residents' services, registration and residence

Registration is handled by the residents' services (Einwohnerdienste) of the City of Chur in the Stadthaus, Masanserstrasse 2. The city gives the following counter hours: Monday and Wednesday 8.30–11.30 and 14.00–16.30, Tuesday 8.30–11.30, Thursday 8.30–11.30 and 14.00–18.00, Friday until 14.00. You can reach the residents' services by telephone on 081 254 41 56 or by email at [email protected].

The residents' services page itself does not state a registration deadline; the city lists the deadline and documents under the keyword “Anmeldung” (registration) in its services. Check there before your moving date. For foreign nationals, the Office for Migration and Civil Law of Graubünden is also involved: the city refers, for example, to its application forms for converting a residence permit and for family reunification.

In practice this means: if the civil registry office reports the birth of a child of foreign parents, the residents' services apply, according to the city, to the Office for Migration and Civil Law of Graubünden for the child's residence permit. On application, the office can maintain a settlement permit for up to four years during a temporary stay abroad, but there is no legal entitlement to this. Further services are offered by the city's online counter (chur.ch/online-schalter). Plan your first visit to the authorities shortly after arrival and have your ID and tenancy agreement ready.
