Chur Guide
Arriving in Chur, the Capital of Graubünden on the Alpine Rhine
The first few weeks
Chur is the capital of the canton of Graubünden, lies on the Alpine Rhine and is the seat of the Diocese of Chur. Chur is often described as the oldest town in Switzerland – a slogan based on Bronze Age and Iron Age finds in the Welschdörfli. Since 2020, Maladers, Haldenstein and Tschiertschen-Praden have joined the town. The SBB lines from Zurich and St. Gallen end at the station, and the Rhaetian Railway's metre-gauge network begins here. We come from Berlin and plan your home removal to Chur.
The old town is a pedestrian zone and, according to the town, may only be entered by motor vehicles at certain times; the removal van needs a permit, which you apply for online. We have no branch in Switzerland; instead, we come by lorry from Berlin-Moabit and clarify access to narrow staircases in advance. For your belongings we accept liability under the HGB. The route and customs are described on the page Moving Berlin – Chur.

Frequently Asked Questions from New Residents in Chur
Districts and Neighbourhoods – Where Newcomers Live in Chur
Chur is divided into districts (Kreise) with several neighbourhoods each. The Innenstadt district includes the old town, Brandis, Chur Zentrum and Gäuggeli; the old town with the cathedral is a pedestrian zone. The Kaserne district includes the Welschdörfli, where Bronze Age and Iron Age finds are documented. Other districts include Chur West, Fürstenwald, Loë-Lürlibad, Masans, Neustadt, Rhein and Rossboden.
Since 2020, Maladers, Haldenstein and Tschiertschen-Praden have also belonged to the town. We deliberately do not quote specific rents here, because they depend heavily on location, condition and size. Search via the large portals and with housing cooperatives, and have proof of salary and a debt collection register extract ready. We then plan your home removal accordingly.
Work, Education and Leisure in Chur
As the cantonal capital, Chur is the seat of the cantonal administration. The Kantonsspital Graubünden employs around 1,700 people, and the Graubündner Kantonalbank, Würth Logistics and the media company Somedia have their headquarters in the town. Besides the University of Applied Sciences of the Grisons, there are the University of Teacher Education Graubünden, the Theological University of Chur and other colleges of higher education.
For leisure, the mountains right outside the town beckon: Pizokel with Brambrüesch and Mittenberg, the neighbouring municipality of Arosa and the Alpine Rhine. Chur's town bus serves the neighbourhoods and surrounding municipalities with six lines, and the town is connected to the A13 via the Chur-Nord and Chur-Süd exits. Since 2024, Nextbike has run the bike rental system.

Foreign nationals also need the application form (A1 for EU/EFTA, B1 for third countries), a copy of the employment contract and proof of insurance with a Swiss health insurer. If available, the assurance of a residence permit and a foreign national's ID card are added. Weekly residents present the certificate of residence from their home municipality.

Chur Old Town: Driving Permit, Collection Schedule and Multi-Collection Point
According to the town of Chur, the old town may only be entered by motor vehicles at certain times. If you need to reach the pedestrian zone with a vehicle, order the permit online via bewilligungen.chur.ch; among other things, the town offers a day driving permit for this. The town's page does not list exact times, fees and deadlines in its overview, so you should ask the town of Chur in advance whether a removal vehicle will be allowed. For a move to Chur, we plan the approach together with you.
The town also organises everyday life digitally: on the "Neu in Chur" page you will find the collection schedule as a PDF, waste collections by street or by date and round, and a reminder service for paper, cardboard or green waste collections. As the collection point for recyclables, the town names the multi-collection point (Multisammelstelle). This lets you dispose of packing material properly after unpacking.
Families will find registration for the town school on the same page, and there is a separate online registration for dogs. According to the town, the ChurCard residents' card offers benefits for residents. If you want to choose your district in advance, the guide to Chur offers an overview; for moves over long distances, read our page on long-distance moving.
