Halle (Saale) for New Residents
Halle (Saale): University, Saale Islands and Trams on Your Doorstep
Settling in, not just moving
With just over 226,000 inhabitants, Halle (Saale) is the second-largest city in Saxony-Anhalt and, together with Leipzig, forms a metropolitan area of more than one million people. Martin Luther University was founded in 1694, and there are also the Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design and the Leopoldina, the National Academy of Sciences. Halle was not destroyed on a large scale in the Second World War; many old-building quarters have survived. The Saale divides the city from south to north and forms several islands such as the Peißnitz.
For newcomers, the first weeks are about registration, the flat search and getting to work or university. The city has a qualified rent index (Mietspiegel) and three citizen service centres; in local transport, HAVAG's trams connect all the major districts. We are a moving company from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21), not from Halle, and we handle the transport. Our page Moving Berlin – Halle (Saale) describes the route from Berlin – around 170 km, mostly via the A9.

What We Clarify Before Your Move to Halle
Old building, prefab block, parking
We come from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and are not a Halle-based firm. That is why we clarify the details with you before moving day: stairwell and lift, parking for the lorry and whether a restricted area is needed via the city's online application. In old-building quarters without a lift we plan more movers; in Halle-Neustadt we measure the lift and stairs in advance. Your belongings are covered under the HGB (§ 451e: €620 per m³), and additional insurance is available on request. We give the price after the survey as a fixed price.

Halle
(Saale) for Newcomers
If you are moving to Halle, you usually choose a location first: old-building quarters around the city centre, Giebichenstein and Kröllwitz on the Saale, or the planned town of Halle-Neustadt west of the river, built from 1964. Your tram line, commute and search for a nursery depend on this. You will find the rent index and the citizen service centres' appointment booking on the city's website. On request we take care of the restricted area for the removal van, furniture assembly and – if the flat is not yet available – storage.

Frequently Asked Questions from Newcomers in Halle (Saale)
City Boroughs and Neighbourhoods: Where Newcomers Live in Halle
Halle is divided into the five city boroughs Mitte, Nord, Ost, Süd and West, which are split into districts and neighbourhoods. Because the city was hardly destroyed in the Second World War, there are many old buildings around the city centre, for example in the Paulusviertel or the Südstadt. In the north lie Giebichenstein, with its castle and art university, and Kröllwitz on the Saale; both were incorporated in 1900.
West of the Saale, the planned town of Halle-Neustadt was built from 1964. From 1967 to 1990 it was a separate independent town and today it is part of Halle again. One of the three citizen service centres is also located there. Where you live determines your tram line and the carrying route on moving day – we plan vehicle and team to suit the address.
Working, Studying and Leisure in Halle (Saale)
According to Wikipedia, the largest employers in the city in 2023 included Deutsche Post DHL, University Hospital Halle, Stadtwerke Halle with subsidiaries such as HAVAG, GP Günter Papenburg AG and envia Mitteldeutsche Energie. There are also public authorities such as the State Administration Office and the Agency for Innovation in Cybersecurity. Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg is one of the oldest universities in the country.
For leisure there are the Francke Foundations from 1698, Handel's birthplace, the Moritzburg art museum and the State Museum of Prehistory with the Nebra Sky Disc. In the middle of the city the Saale forms islands such as the Peißnitz and the Ziegelwiese. Leipzig can be reached quickly by S-Bahn on the MDV fare. It is best to compare rents with the city's rent index; we do not quote our own averages.

Registering in Halle (Saale): Citizen Service Centres, eWA and Landlord Confirmation
If you move to Halle (Saale), under § 17(1) of the Federal Registration Act you must register with the registration authority within two weeks of moving in. According to the city of Halle, you do this at one of the three citizen service centres: Marktplatz 1 (Ratshof), Am Reileck or Am Stadion 6 in Halle-Neustadt. Book an appointment online via the city's booking system before you go. According to the city, only card payment is possible at Am Reileck, while cash is also accepted at the other two locations.
Alternatively, the city offers electronic residence registration (eWA). For this you need an ID card with the online ID function activated, a BundID account, an NFC-enabled smartphone or a card reader, the current AusweisApp and the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbescheinigung) from your landlord. The registration authority checks your details, and you then receive a sticker for your ID card and passport by post. A secondary residence cannot be registered via eWA; for that, book an appointment at a citizen service centre.
The landlord confirmation is not a mere formality: under § 19 of the Federal Registration Act, your landlord must confirm the move-in, stating the move-in date, the address of the flat and the names of the persons required to register. It is best to ask for it at the key handover. How a move to Halle works overall is explained in our moving guide for Halle (Saale).
Residents' Parking Permit and Moving Day in Halle (Saale)
In some parts of Halle (Saale), residents need a residents' parking permit. The city gives the following key facts: the permit is valid for a maximum of twelve months from issue, and you must be registered in the relevant residents' parking zone and actually live there. According to the city, first issue and renewal cost €30.70 plus €0.30 in expenses, and an online application adds €2.50 postage. For first issue you need your ID card or passport, vehicle registration certificate Part I and your driving licence. Renewal is possible up to four weeks before expiry.
Note the restrictions: the permit does not guarantee a particular parking space, anyone with a private parking space will not receive a permit, and the city does not issue visitor permits. A move within Halle and a change of number plate must be handled in person or via a representative.
For moving day itself, the city's moving page refers to the online application “Straßensperrung wegen Umzug” (road closure for a move). The moving page does not state the fee or lead time, so ask the city early and do not leave parking for the removal van until the day before. On the same page the city also reminds you to update the address in your vehicle registration and to re-register for the broadcasting licence fee. How a parking restriction zone generally works is explained on our service page Parking restriction zone; you will find the city page under Moves in Halle (Saale).
