Moving to Magdeburg: costs process & districts

Magdeburg is divided into 40 districts, within which further residential areas and estates have become established. The city's road traffic authority (An der Steinkuhle 6) is responsible for putting up traffic signs for a furniture move in Magdeburg. According to the city's website (archived version from December 2025), you submit two documents: an application stating the location, period, date and old and new home address, and a traffic sign plan. You can draw up the plan yourself, for example as a sketch or using a map service. It can be submitted by post; give a phone number for queries.

The key details according to the city:

• The fee is €16.
• The application should be made at least 14 days in advance.
• A barrier company must be commissioned to put up the signs.
• The signs must be in place at least 72 hours before moving day.
• The legal basis is § 45 StVO (German Road Traffic Regulations).

The city provides the application form for furniture moves as a PDF. You can reach the administration on the public service number 115 if you have questions. After moving in, you have two weeks to register in Magdeburg. According to the city (archived version from January 2026), registration is free of charge; late registration can lead to a fine of up to one thousand euros. For the appointment at the citizens' office you need a valid identity document and the original landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung), as the tenancy agreement is not sufficient. Since 12.08.2024 the city has also offered electronic address registration via wohnsitzanmeldung.de. For this you need an identity card with the online ID function, a BundID account and the AusweisApp. A secondary residence cannot be registered online.

This is how to get rid of old furniture after the move:

• According to the city (archived version from January 2026), bulky waste is generally collected free of charge: twice a year up to two cubic metres, or once a year up to four cubic metres.
• For the free collection you should allow about four weeks' lead time.
• A preferred date costs a fee and should be booked at least one week in advance.
• Construction and renovation waste such as doors, windows or parquet does not count as bulky waste.
