Moving in Magdeburg: 14-day application period Stadtfeld to Buckau

Magdeburg is the state capital and largest city of Saxony-Anhalt. It lies on the Elbe and is divided into 40 districts – from the Gründerzeit streets of Stadtfeld-Ost and the Altstadt around the Cathedral of St Maurice and St Catherine to rural areas such as Alt-Diesdorf. In Magdeburg, a parking ban for private moves is handled via the application to set up traffic signs for furniture moves. The City of Magdeburg provides a form for this on magdeburg.de. There is a separate form for an exemption permit for household moves.

On this page the city states an application deadline of at least 14 days before the move and a fee of 16 euros. You should have both details confirmed again by the road traffic authority before applying, as municipal pages are updated. It is better to submit the application earlier so that there is enough time to hire the barrier company. The application can be submitted by post.

After moving in, you have two weeks in Magdeburg to register with the registration office (Meldebehörde). The City of Magdeburg states that registration is free of charge. You need to bring a valid identity document and the original landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung); a tenancy agreement is not sufficient. So ask your landlord for the confirmation in good time.

For registration in person, book an appointment at a BürgerBüro (citizens' office). The city lists, among others, the offices Mitte (Leiterstraße 2a), Nord (Lübecker Straße 32), Süd (Salbker Chaussee 67) and West (Bruno-Beye-Ring 50). The public service number is 115. Since 12 August 2024 there has also been electronic registration for your main residence. According to the city, exceptions include registrations from abroad, secondary residences and people without a German ID card or eID. You can be represented by an authorised person with written power of attorney.
