From Berlin to Halberstadt
Moving to Halberstadt: cathedral town at the gateway to the Harz
Guide
A move to Halberstadt takes you to the district town of the Harz district, around 20 kilometres north of the mountains on the Holtemme river. Just under 37,000 people live here. The town is known for its Gothic cathedral, St Martin's Church and the slowest piece of music in the world: John Cage's ORGAN²/ASLSP in St Burchardi's Church. After the air raid of 8 April 1945, around 450 half-timbered houses survived, mainly in the Voigtei and Westendorf – with narrow staircases. For your private move we clarify access and floor in advance.
We start in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive the lorry around 209 km, mostly via the A2, to Halberstadt; including the statutory break that is about 3 hours, with loading and unloading on the same day. Whether you are moving from Berlin to Halberstadt or back to Berlin, we quote the fixed price after a survey. In Halberstadt you register within two weeks of moving in (§ 17 BMG); your landlord issues the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung). More on this under Moving Berlin – Halberstadt.

What we take care of when you move to Halberstadt
Planning in Berlin, arrival in Halberstadt
We have no branch in Halberstadt; we come by lorry from Berlin-Moabit. That is why we ask about access, floor and staircase in advance – whether it is a half-timbered house in the Voigtei or a house in Langenstein. In Halberstadt you apply to the town for the parking restriction; according to the town, only a certified signage company may put up the signs – we coordinate the date and parking space accordingly. We quote the fixed price after the survey; we are liable for your belongings under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre. For your private move we coordinate the date with the flat handover.

Your
move, our craft
A move to Halberstadt raises many questions: town centre or outlying district, how does the lorry reach a half-timbered house in the old town, who puts up the parking restriction signs and where does the bulky waste go? This guide presents the districts from Aspenstedt to the chess village of Ströbeck and sums up what the town and the waste management company enwi say about it. On top of that come registration and the journey of around 209 km from Berlin. That way you are prepared before the first box is packed.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Halberstadt
Town centre and districts of Halberstadt
In addition to the town centre, Halberstadt comprises seven districts with their own local councils: Aspenstedt, Athenstedt, Emersleben, Klein Quenstedt, Langenstein, Sargstedt and the chess village of Ströbeck. Other localities include Wehrstedt, the Klussiedlung and the Sargstedter Siedlung; Böhnshausen and Mahndorf belong to the locality of Langenstein.
In the town centre, the cathedral, St Martin's Church and half-timbering shape the northern old town around the Voigtei; much else was rebuilt after 1945. The outlying districts, by contrast, mostly have detached houses and old farmhouses, some of them half-timbered as in Langenstein. For the move, the specific address is what counts: we clarify staircase width, floor and parking space during the survey. Our private move service adapts to it.
University, edge of the Harz and cathedral treasury
Halberstadt is the largest town in the Harz district and, because of the many roads that converge here, is also called the "Gateway to the Harz". The town is a supra-regional railway hub and lies on the B 79, B 81 and B 245 federal roads. The Harz University of Applied Sciences has its Department of Administrative Sciences here, housed among other places in the former cathedral grammar school. We do not quote specific rents – they depend heavily on location and condition.
From the 9th century until 1648 Halberstadt was a bishop's seat, as the cathedral and cathedral treasury bear witness. As a balance to town life, the Spiegelsberge hills and the Huy are right on the doorstep. If you are arriving for the start of a semester or a new job, fix the moving day early, because according to the town the parking restriction signs must be in place four days beforehand. Long routes from Berlin can be found under Long-distance moves.

Parking restriction for your move in Halberstadt: online application, deadline and fee
In Halberstadt you apply to the town for the parking restriction for your move. According to the town of Halberstadt's website, you can apply for a limited no-stopping zone under § 45 StVO on municipal roads and other public roads within the town for the duration of a move. It makes loading and unloading in front of the old and the new flat easier. The road traffic department is responsible. Applicants can be removal companies or private individuals.
- Deadline: the application must be submitted no later than two weeks before the move begins. The traffic signs must be in place four days before the move.
- Fee: the town states 15.00 euros per traffic order.
- Signage: a signage company puts up and removes the signs at your own expense. Only official traffic signs may be used, and the company needs a certificate under ZTV-SA 97/MVAS 99.
- Access: the application is completed and submitted online in the service portal. According to the town, this requires a free BundID account, which you can create when logging in.
You may not reserve parking spaces yourself without a permit, for example with wheelie bins, barrier tape or cones. Other road users do not have to respect such barriers. So plan the deadline backwards from moving day: first the application, then the order, then the signs. More about access can be found on the page Parking restriction zone.
Bulky waste and clearance in Halberstadt: enwi in the Harz district
Waste disposal in Halberstadt is the responsibility of the Harz district's waste management company (enwi), Braunschweiger Straße 87/88 in Halberstadt, telephone 03941 6880-0. According to enwi, the standard collection of bulky waste is free of charge. A maximum of 10 m³ of loose waste is collected per booking. Collection takes place within three weeks of receipt of the booking, and the date is sent by reply card.
- Booking: with the card from the enwi waste calendar, via enwi's online form service or by phone on 0 39 43 - 56 07 38.
- Express: according to enwi, express collection costs 104.17 euros per collection, can only be ordered by phone and takes place within two working days (Monday to Friday). Payment is made in advance to enwi or in cash to the collection crew; without payment there is no collection.
- Containers: no containers are provided; collection is carried out with collection vehicles.
- Dropping off yourself: at enwi's recycling centres, drop-off of up to 2 m³ per delivery and day is free of charge.
If you are clearing out before the move, book early so that the date fits the flat handover. If you would like a complete clearance, you will find information on house clearance; tips on settling in are in the guide Living in Halberstadt.
