Chur in Graubünden: moving from Berlin through the Rhine valley

Removal company Berlin
To the Rhine bend in Graubünden: Berlin ↔ Chur
With customs and the A13
Chur is the capital of Graubünden and lies where the Alpine Rhine turns north and the Plessur emerges from its gorge. A move from Berlin to Chur therefore means a long drive into the mountains and a customs border, because Switzerland lies outside the EU customs union. We at Beste Umzug drive the roughly 816 kilometres from Moabit (Stromstraße 21) with one team right to your front door in Chur. At the survey we measure the volume, put the inventory list together with you and set the fixed price in writing.
Our route to Chur: A9, A6, A7 and A96 to Lindau, then 26 km of the Austrian A14 through the Pfänder Tunnel and the Vorarlberg Rhine valley, and from the border the Swiss A13 via Sargans and Landquart. Approx. 12.5 hrs of lorry driving time with breaks exceeds one driver's daily driving time – hence two drivers or two days, with the border crossing during customs opening hours. You can add furniture assembly, kitchen dismantling or piano transport. You receive the fixed price including toll, LSVA and customs clearance after the survey, also for the return move to Berlin.

What Chur costs

Planning
for Chur: border, lanes, registration
For Graubünden the rule is: your household goods need an inventory list and form 18.44, and after moving in you register in person with the residents' services (Einwohnerdienste) of the city of Chur within 14 days – EU citizens with passport or ID, application A1, employment contract, proof of health insurance and tenancy agreement or housing certificate with the official flat number. For the return move to Berlin come export with a list, notice and the registration office (Bürgeramt) within two weeks. Plus a parking restriction in Berlin, a parking space in Chur, furniture assembly and storage.

Moving your residence to Graubünden: Chur and the customs border
Chur is the capital of the canton of Graubünden. The city has spread from the right bank of the Plessur below the bishop's court across the Plessur's alluvial fan almost to the Rhine; the SBB lines from Zurich and St. Gallen end at the station, and the Rhaetian Railway continues from here. Anyone moving from Berlin to Chur leaves the EU customs union. Furniture and household goods that you have used for at least six months and will continue to use count as removal goods (Übersiedlungsgut) and remain duty-free – with a signed form 18.44, an inventory list and proof of the change of residence, such as a tenancy or employment contract. Clearance takes place during the customs office's opening hours, usually on working days.
For the return move from Chur to Berlin the reverse applies: an inventory list with both addresses for Swiss export, and a declaration to German customs; duty-free under Regulation (EC) 1186/2009 after at least twelve months of residence outside the EU. Here too, there is a fixed price after a survey.
816 km: Nuremberg, Memmingen, Lindau, Pfänder Tunnel, A13
From the Berlin ring road we take the A9 to Nuremberg, then 77 km on the A6 to the Feuchtwangen/Crailsheim interchange. The A7 leads to Memmingen, the A96 through the Allgäu to Lindau. Beyond the border with Austria we take the A14 through the Pfänder Tunnel, past Bregenz and Dornbirn; after around 26 km we cross the Rhine into Switzerland. The A13 then leads up the Rhine via Sargans and Landquart to the Chur-Nord and Chur-Süd exits. Around 816 km in total, approx. 12.5 hrs of lorry driving time with breaks.
The A14 is subject to a toll for lorries, and in Switzerland the LSVA is added; we factor in both. A speed limit of 80 km/h for lorries over 3.5 t on German motorways (§ 18 para. 5 StVO) and a 45-minute break after 4.5 hours make two drivers or an overnight stop necessary – before the border, so that clearance can take place in the morning.
Hof, Arcas, Masans: where the lorry stops in Chur
The old town stretches from the Hof with the cathedral down to squares such as Arcas, Kornplatz, Pfisterplatz and Hegisplatz, lined with town houses and guild houses. Around the station there is a shared-space zone (Begegnungszone), and the Rhaetian Railway runs through the city for a stretch like a tram. Other quarters are Masans, which has grown together with the town centre, the Rheinquartier with the Lacuna development, Sand, Fürstenwald and, since 2021, Haldenstein. We clarify access, parking space and floor in advance; you complete registration within 14 days at the residents' services counter.
Anyone who later returns to Berlin deregisters with the Chur residents' services; in Berlin, registration at the registration office (Bürgeramt) follows within two weeks. For the lorry in front of the new door we apply for a parking restriction, whose signs are put up three days beforehand.
Guide prices Berlin–Chur by flat size
Whether you are moving to Chur or from Chur back to Berlin: in the end there is a fixed price with no additional charges. For an initial calculation at home, these figures help, graded by number of rooms:
| Rooms | Cargo space | Guide price |
|---|---|---|
| one room | 10–15 m³ | from €350 |
| two rooms | 20–25 m³ | from €590 |
| three rooms | 30–40 m³ | from €890 |
| four rooms | 45–60 m³ | from €1,290 |
| House | from 60 m³ | after assessment |
For the 816 km to Graubünden a guide price from €3,300 applies, in both directions. The A14 toll, LSVA for the A13, customs clearance and a second driver appear as separate items; it becomes binding after a free survey.
What moves the Chur price
First the volume. On the move to Chur, the 816 km, the A14 toll, the LSVA for the A13, customs clearance and whether two drivers or an overnight stop are planned are added; the earlier rule of thumb of from €4 per km only serves as a rough guide. Floor, lift and extras such as furniture assembly also count. With little luggage, a part load saves money.
