Montreux on the Vaud Riviera: 1 047 km via Bern and the A12 – and back

Moving company Berlin
Via Bern and Fribourg: your move Berlin ↔ Montreux
Move without stress
A move from Berlin to Montreux takes you to the eastern shore of Lake Geneva, in the French-speaking canton of Vaud – and out of the EU customs union. Your household goods are declared as removal goods (Übersiedlungsgut) with form 18.44 and an inventory list. We come from Berlin, Stromstraße 21 in Moabit, and drive the roughly 1,047 km right to your door with one team. We plan dismantling, packing and furniture assembly on request; we set the fixed price in writing after the survey.
At approx. 16 hrs by lorry including breaks, the route is far beyond one day's driving time: under EU Regulation 561/2006 a driver may drive for nine hours a day, so we drive with two drivers or over two days. The border crossing near Basel falls within the customs office's opening hours, and because lorries over 3.5 t may not drive at night in Switzerland from 10 pm to 5 am, we arrive during the day. Liability is under the HGB (§ 451e). We also plan your return move from Montreux to Berlin this way.

What works differently in Montreux than in Berlin
Montreux climbs steeply up the hillside from a narrow strip of shoreline. That is why for every address we clarify the gradient, turning space and lorry size – and put customs papers, the night-time driving ban and the fixed price into one joint plan.

Part load Berlin ↔ Montreux
Only a few pieces of furniture or a studio household for Vaud? Then a part load is often enough: you pay for the space your belongings take up on the lorry. The customs declaration remains your own, with a separate list. Whether a tour towards Lake Geneva is currently planned, we check after your enquiry.

Move
planning Berlin ↔ Montreux
For your move to Montreux we clarify in advance what is different in Switzerland: the inventory list for the removal goods, form 18.44 and proof such as an employment or tenancy contract, the LSVA for the lorry and the Swiss night-time driving ban. Added to that are the parking restriction in Berlin and a parking space in Montreux, a furniture lift and interim storage. After moving in you register with the municipality – the official language in the canton of Vaud is French. On the return move to Germany the customs declaration and the Bürgeramt follow.

Berlin ↔ Vaud: answers to typical questions
From a Moabit rear courtyard to the Riviera vaudoise
Montreux belongs to the canton of Vaud and the Riviera-Pays-d’Enhaut district; with a good 27,000 inhabitants it is the third-largest town in the canton after Lausanne and Yverdon-les-Bains. Anyone moving from Berlin to Montreux leaves the EU customs union. Furniture, books and household goods that you have used yourself for at least six months and will continue to use on Lake Geneva remain duty-free as removal goods – provided form 18.44 is completed and signed, a list of all items is enclosed and a document shows that you are moving your residence, such as a tenancy agreement in Clarens or an employment contract in the region. The customs office only clears goods during its opening hours for commercial goods, so we plan the border crossing on a working day.
Back from Montreux to Berlin the roles are reversed: the Swiss export office receives the list with the old and new address, and German customs checks whether you have lived outside the EU for at least twelve months and used the items for at least six months – then everything remains duty-free (Regulation (EC) 1186/2009). For both directions we write a fixed price after the survey.
Route plan: Basel, Belchen Tunnel, Bern, Gruyère
We start at Stromstraße; via the AVUS and the A10 the lorry reaches the A9, which it leaves at the Hermsdorf interchange. Then it continues on the A4 past Erfurt and Eisenach and via the Kirchheim and Hattenbach interchanges onto the A5 via Frankfurt, Karlsruhe and Freiburg to the border near Basel. In Switzerland come the A2 through the Belchen Tunnel, the A1 to Bern and the A12 via Fribourg, Bulle and Châtel-St-Denis to the La Veyre junction above Vevey; a short stretch on the A9 brings us to Montreux. In total around 1,047 km, approx. 16 hrs by lorry including breaks.
On German motorways lorries over 3.5 t drive at no more than 80 km/h (§ 18 (5) StVO), and after four and a half hours of driving time a 45-minute break is mandatory. That is far too much for a single day's driving time: either two drivers take turns, or the lorry stays overnight before Basel and crosses the border on the next working day. Since 1970 the A9 has bypassed Territet and the centre through the Glion Tunnel; we leave it above Clarens. The way back to Berlin follows the same route.
From the Quai to Caux: where your new address is
Between the lakeshore and the mountain stations in Montreux lie several hundred metres of altitude. Down on the Quai grand hotels, the casino and the convention centre line up, and since 1996 the Freddie Mercury statue has stood on the shore. The neighbourhoods of Clarens, Vernex, Les Planches and Territet lie close to the water, Chernex, Glion, Les Avants and Caux considerably higher – since 1892 Glion and Caux have been served by the rack railway up to the Rochers de Naye. For the lorry this means: gradient, bends and turning space decide the vehicle size and the need for a furniture lift, so we check your address in advance. After moving in, you register with the municipality's Office de la population, where information is given in French.
If you return to Berlin, you have two weeks to register at the Bürgeramt; you need to bring your ID and the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung). We apply for the parking restriction signs at the Berlin address with the road traffic authority of the district office, and they are put up 72 hours before moving day. If moving out on Lake Geneva comes earlier than moving in on the Spree, we put your household goods into storage.
Roughly what the move to Lake Geneva costs
The following figures are an initial ballpark for the Berlin–Montreux route and back; we only name the binding amount once we have seen your flat:
| Household | Load volume | Guide price |
|---|---|---|
| Studio / 1 room | 10–15 m³ | from €350 |
| 2 rooms | 20–25 m³ | from €590 |
| 3 rooms | 30–40 m³ | from €890 |
| 4 rooms | 45–60 m³ | from €1,290 |
| House or villa on the hillside | from 60 m³ | by arrangement |
For the good 1,047 road kilometres between Moabit and Lake Geneva we set from €3,940, whichever the direction. The heavy vehicle fee, customs clearance and the second driver appear in the quote as separate lines; binding is the fixed price after the free survey.
Why two moves to Montreux rarely cost the same
What counts most is how many cubic metres go onto the lorry. On the route to Montreux the good 1,047 km, the LSVA for the Swiss kilometres, customs clearance and two drivers or an overnight stop are added. On Lake Geneva the location also plays a role: a flat in Glion without a lift costs more carrying time than a new build in Clarens. Optional: furniture assembly, a parking restriction or a more affordable part load.
What we take on for your move to Lake Geneva
Depending on what you are taking to Vaud, you book individual modules or everything together:
- Private move – flat in Berlin empty, flat by the lake furnished
- Company move – office and files for a location in Romandy
- Furniture transport – individual heirlooms or a grand piano
- Part load – small quantities on a shared tour
- Move with assembly – dismantled in Berlin, assembled in Montreux
- Clearance – whatever is not coming along, we clear away in Berlin
