Montreux guide
Moving to Montreux: lakeshore, hillside locations and jazz
Guide
A move to Montreux takes you to Lake Geneva in the canton of Vaud: around 27,000 people live in the town, which lies sheltered by 2,000-metre peaks and is known for its mild climate and the Montreux Jazz Festival. The shore is built up from Territet to Clarens, and behind it the slopes rise steeply. That is why we clarify access, parking and carrying routes before moving day.
Whether it is a flat in Clarens or a house in Glion above the lake: we come from Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive around 1,047 km via Basel; by lorry that is about 16 hours including breaks, so two to three days. Because Switzerland is not part of the EU, the household goods are declared at customs as household effects. The route and customs are described under Move Berlin – Montreux.

Moving to Montreux: survey first, then a fixed price
Volume, floor, route – all in the price
We do not calculate the price of your move to Montreux by the hour but by volume, floor, carrying routes and the distance of around 1,047 km. After a survey you receive a written fixed price – for a flat in Clarens just as for a house in Glion.
Offers available individually, depending on effort, scheduling and the scope of services required.

How your move to Montreux works with us
Survey, fixed price, fixed date
We have no branch in Montreux; instead we come by lorry from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21). That is why we ask about access, floor and staircase in advance – whether it is a flat in Clarens or a house in Glion. Parking spaces for the move are reserved by the Riviera's Office de la mobilité with 3 working days' notice; for addresses on a slope we clarify access and the parking area with you in advance. We give you the fixed price after the survey; we are liable for your household goods under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre, and additional insurance is available. Places with their own pages can be found under Locations.

Your
move, our craft
A move to Montreux raises its own questions: which neighbourhood suits you – by the lake or on the slope –, how early should the parking space be reserved with the Riviera, how does registration at the Office de la population work and what applies at the border to household effects (Übersiedlungsgut)? This guide introduces the neighbourhoods from Territet to Clarens and the elevated villages of Glion and Caux, and explains costs and process.

Common questions about moving to Montreux
Neighbourhoods by the lake and on the slope
The municipality of Montreux has around 5.5 km of shoreline, divided by the alluvial fans of the Baye de Clarens and the Baye de Montreux. The shore is continuously built up from Territet in the south-east to Clarens in the north-west; in between lies Les Planches, among others. Above the lake, the heights of Glion and Caux belong to Montreux.
Near Clarens the slopes rise relatively gently, further south-east much more steeply. Neighbouring municipalities are Veytaux, La Tour-de-Peilz and Blonay – Saint-Légier. For the move this means: on the shore, parking and traffic count; on the slope, gradient, access and carrying routes. Our private move service adapts to this.
Tourism, hotel schools and the festival: who moves to Montreux
Montreux is a tourist resort with an international reputation and the venue of the Montreux Jazz Festival. As a place of education, it is known among other things for a hotel management school in Glion (founded in 1962) and other vocational schools. On the lakeshore, a monument commemorates Freddie Mercury, who lived here for a time. We do not quote specific rents; the price level in Switzerland is well above that in Germany.
The official language is French. Registration is handled by the Office de la population; the canton of Vaud points out that municipalities can impose fines if notifications are not made. So plan registration, health insurance and a parking permit straight after moving in.

Moving to Montreux: reserving parking and clearing household goods through customs
On Lake Geneva, the Riviera's Office de la mobilité reserves parking spaces for moves. The menu of securite-riviera.ch includes "Stationnement – Déménagement"; the signage page gives these key facts for reservations (excluding VAT): applications must be submitted 3 working days in advance, 1 to 3 parking spaces cost CHF 60, 4 to 5 parking spaces CHF 100. In addition, CHF 10 per day and space may be charged for lost revenue. The office is at Rue du Simplon 38, 1800 Vevey (telephone +41 21 966 85 20).
At customs, Switzerland follows the BAZG. For the duty-free import of household effects:
- You fill in Form 18.44 "Declaration/application for clearance of household effects".
- The items must have been used abroad for at least 6 months.
- According to the BAZG, no advance notification is necessary; the declaration is made on entry, generally Monday to Friday during opening hours.
- Lorries use the lorry lane; the inventory may be written on ordinary paper.
For goods traffic, the BAZG also mentions the performance-related heavy vehicle fee (LSVA). Details of the process can be found in the article Long-distance move Berlin – Montreux and in our customs guide for Switzerland.
Montreux: residents' registration, parking permits and Veytaux
Registration is handled by the Office de la population (residents' registration office) of the municipality of Montreux, Avenue des Alpes 18, 1820 Montreux, telephone 021 962 78 50. According to the municipality, the counters are open on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 8:00 am to 2:30 pm and on Wednesdays from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. You can also report a move via the citizen account in the "guichet virtuel". The canton of Vaud points out that municipalities can impose fines if notifications are not made; so ask the office directly about the deadline.
If you are bringing a vehicle: according to securite-riviera.ch, residents', commuters' and traders' parking permits are issued exclusively in digital form, offered by Corseaux, Corsier-sur-Vevey, La Tour-de-Peilz, Montreux and Vevey. Veytaux and Blonay issue their own parking permits and must be contacted directly. According to the page, you report any change of residence or number plate "sans délai", i.e. without delay. The permit is valid as soon as payment has been received; if it is cancelled early, the municipality refunds a proportional amount. The responsible office (Rue du Simplon 38, Vevey) can be reached Monday to Thursday from 08:00 to 12:00 and 13:30 to 16:30, and on Fridays until 16:00.
