’s-Hertogenbosch for Newcomers: Brabant's Capital Between the Dieze and the Maas

’s-Hertogenbosch Newcomers' Guide
’s-Hertogenbosch: An Old Town on a Sand Ridge, with Villages All Around
The first few weeks
’s-Hertogenbosch, known in everyday life as Den Bosch, is the capital of the province of Noord-Brabant and the seat of the provincial administration, a court and a diocese. The old town lies on a small sand ridge on the Dieze, near the Maas; above it rises St John's Cathedral. The municipality also includes villages and districts such as Rosmalen, Empel, Engelen and Hintham. We handle the transport from a single provider – more under home removal services. Within the EU, household goods need no customs papers.
The station is an NS hub with trains to Amsterdam via Utrecht, to Maastricht via Eindhoven, and to Tilburg, Breda and Nijmegen; the A2 and A59 motorways pass the city. For newcomers, registering with the Gemeente (municipality) within five days of arrival comes first. We come from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and handle long-distance moves at a fixed price after a survey. Whether an old building in the Binnenstad or a house in Rosmalen – we bring your household goods safely to their destination.

What we clarify before moving day
Parking, Access, Date
We come from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and handle moves to the Netherlands. In ’s-Hertogenbosch, the Binnenstad (city centre) has its own parking rules, and resident permits only apply in your own sector. Clarify in advance with the Gemeente where the removal van may stand in your street; we will give you the vehicle length and time slot for the application. Planning, packing, transport and assembly all come from a single provider, your belongings are covered under the HGB, and we quote the fixed price after a survey. More destinations under Locations.

What
newcomers should settle early
When moving to ’s-Hertogenbosch, registering with the Gemeente, energy and internet contracts and finding a flat come first. We deliberately do not give reliable current rents here; compare offers in the Binnenstad, Muntel, Maaspoort or Rosmalen yourself. If you are coming with a car, check before you commit which parking permit applies to the address. If you are moving with children, ask early about school and nursery places. We are happy to advise you on timing, parking on moving day and moving logistics; your belongings are covered under the HGB throughout.

Questions About Living in ’s-Hertogenbosch
Districts and Villages of ’s-Hertogenbosch
The Binnenstad with its canals, market and St John's Cathedral is the historic heart; until 1874, the fortified city was not allowed to build outside its ramparts. After that, districts such as ’t Zand and De Muntel were connected to the old town, and De Muntel is now a protected townscape. The Paleiskwartier is a modern district with higher education institutions and offices.
The municipality also includes villages and districts such as Rosmalen, Empel, Engelen, Hintham and Bokhoven. In Maaspoort stand the well-known Bolwoningen, spherical houses. Which location suits you depends on your commute, school and parking permit.
Working, Learning and Celebrating in Den Bosch
The economy of ’s-Hertogenbosch consists of many small and medium-sized industrial and trading businesses, but the service sector dominates; the provincial administration, the court and hospitals are major employers. The city is home to a large Heineken brewery. Schools and higher education institutions such as Avans, HAS green academy and the Jheronimus Academy of Data Science (JADS) are concentrated around the Paleiskwartier.
Culturally, St John's Cathedral, the Noordbrabants Museum with its links to Hieronymus Bosch and the Jazz in Duketown festival shape the city. Carnival has been celebrated in a big way since the 19th century; Den Bosch is then called “Oeteldonk”, and there is even a dedicated carnival museum.

What Determines the Price for Den Bosch
How high the costs of your move turn out to be depends on the volume, the distance (from €3.85/km), the floor and whether there is a lift. If there is no parking directly outside the door, we recommend a parking restriction zone. We are also happy to advise you on furniture assembly and shared loads.

Registering in 's-Hertogenbosch: Deadlines and Routes
Anyone moving to 's-Hertogenbosch must report the move to the municipality. The municipality distinguishes two cases.
Moving within the Netherlands: report it within five days of the moving date or up to 28 days beforehand. You can do this digitally via the “Verhuizing doorgeven” (report a move) form. Alternatively, come in by appointment or send a signed letter with a copy of your ID. Reporting by email is not possible. Your previous municipality receives the new address automatically.
Moving from abroad: the municipality requires registration within five days of arriving in the Netherlands. You need an appointment for this. Optional online pre-registration shortens the appointment; without it, it takes longer. Everyone should bring a passport or European identity card. Birth, marriage or divorce certificates do not have to be presented at registration, but must be submitted later. The citizen service number (BSN) is sent by post as quickly as possible after the appointment at the Stadskantoor. The page does not mention a fee.
On the German side: if you move abroad and do not take up a new home in Germany, you must deregister under § 17 of the Federal Registration Act (BMG) within two weeks of moving out. Tips on route and planning can be found in our article on the long-distance move to 's-Hertogenbosch.
Living and Parking in 's-Hertogenbosch: Binnenstad and Residential Districts
In 's-Hertogenbosch, parking is a criterion when choosing where to live. On its page on the parkeervergunning (parking permit), the municipality distinguishes between the Binnenstad and the Woonwijken (residential districts).
- Binnenstad, 24 hours: only via a waiting list. The requirement is registration in the population register (BRP) at a residential address in the Binnenstad and no parking space of your own. The municipality states €97.63 per quarter (as shown on the page when accessed).
- Binnenstad, evening permit (avondvergunning): €43.09 per quarter, valid Monday to Saturday from 5 pm to 10 am, and all day on Sundays and public holidays. A maximum of two evening permits are possible per address, or one 24-hour permit plus one evening permit. It does not apply on the Parade or in the multi-storey car parks.
- Woonwijken: €12.89 per quarter or €51.55 per year, with BRP registration in the relevant area.
The permit only applies in your own sector and does not guarantee a fixed space outside your door. Apply via the digital Parkeerloket (parking office); with iDeal it is valid immediately, and if paying by invoice, processing takes five working days. Amounts change, so check them on the municipality's page before applying. Information on districts and move planning can be found in the guide to moving to 's-Hertogenbosch.
