MOVING FROM BERLIN-MOABIT

Arriving in Fulda

Fulda: Bishop's City Between the Rhön and the Vogelsberg

– the first few weeks

Unsere Firma plans your move from Berlin-Moabit to Fulda; this guide shows what newcomers take care of in the first few weeks.

Fulda is the regional centre of East Hesse, the district town of the district of Fulda and one of six Hessian cities with special status. The city lies in the Fulda Basin between the Rhön to the east and the Vogelsberg to the west; Frankfurt is about 108 km away. Its history begins in 744 with the monastery that Sturmius founded on behalf of Boniface – the saint is buried in St. Salvator's Cathedral, the city's landmark. The Baroque quarter, City Palace and palace garden shape the city centre. For newcomers, everyday life begins there in a very practical way: the citizens' office (Bürgerbüro) is in the City Palace, and appointments are by arrangement only.

Fulda is divided into the core town with around 43,000 inhabitants and 24 districts that were incorporated in 1972. Work is provided by, among others, the Klinikum Fulda with around 2,500 employees, the food retailer tegut with its headquarters in the city, textile companies such as Mehler, the Jass paper mill, JUMO and EDAG, as well as RhönEnergie. More than 8,600 students are enrolled at Hochschule Fulda. For rents we refer to the city's qualified rent index (Mietspiegel); we do not quote our own figures without a source. Students who take up their main residence in Fulda for the first time in 2026 receive the Studenteneuro (student bonus). We handle the transport from Berlin as a home removal.

FROM MOABIT

Transport by us, paperwork by you

Who does what

We have no branch in Fulda: the lorry sets off from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and drives around 459 km via the A9, A4 and A7. Beforehand we ask about the floor, lift and access – whether in the core town, Aschenberg or Fulda-Galerie. On request we apply in good time to the responsible authority for the parking restriction zone (Halteverbotszone) outside the new address. We give you the fixed price after the survey; liability is under § 451e HGB (€620 per m³). You register at the citizens' office in the City Palace yourself – within two weeks and by appointment only. The route is described on the page Moving Berlin – Fulda.

Packing Service

On request we pack your entire household and number the boxes by room – so in Fulda the bed linen and coffee machine are right to hand.

Furniture assembly

We dismantle your furniture in Berlin and reassemble it in Fulda on the day of arrival; that way the bed is ready on the first evening, even if boxes are still waiting.

Storage

If you initially live in furnished or temporary accommodation in Fulda, you can store your household goods with us; delivery follows as soon as your own flat is ready.

Parking restriction

On request we apply in good time for the parking restriction zone outside your new address in Fulda, so that on moving day the lorry can stop right outside the front door.
FIRST STEPS

After Moving In to Fulda

The removal van is empty – now the arriving begins. Newcomers in Fulda should take care of these six points in the first few weeks; we handle transport, assembly and the parking restriction, while the trips to the authorities are up to you.

If needed, apply for the resident parking permit online or in the City Palace.

01

Registration within two weeks

Under § 17 BMG you register at the citizens' office in the City Palace within two weeks of moving in. It is best to book the appointment before moving day.
02

Landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung)

Without your landlord's confirmation (§ 19 BMG), registration in Fulda will not work. Get it at the latest at the key handover.
03

Use the rent index

Fulda has a qualified rent index, valid from 1 January 2026 to the end of 2027 – as a free PDF and online calculator. That is how you check a rental offer.
04

Town bus and ZOB

The town buses start at the „Stadtschloss“ bus station on Heertorplatz, and the central bus station (ZOB) at the railway station connects with the Rhön and Vogelsberg. The station is an ICE hub.
05

Get the waste calendar

The city no longer distributes the waste collection calendar automatically: you can find it online with a street list, as a calendar file or in print from the local mayor (Ortsvorsteher).
06

Re-register your car

If you bring a car, report the new address to the vehicle registration authority without delay (§ 15 FZV); you may keep your existing number plate.
FOR SMALL LOADS

Just One Room to Fulda?

Little furniture, shared trip

Anyone coming to study at Hochschule Fulda often moves with just a bed, a desk and boxes. With a shared load, your belongings use free load space on a trip heading towards Fulda. We agree collection in Berlin and delivery in advance; this trip, too, is covered under the HGB.

New
in Fulda: Everyday Life

What matters in the first few weeks

Anyone moving to Fulda has quite a bit to do in the first few weeks: the appointment at the citizens' office in the City Palace to register within two weeks, the resident parking permit if needed, the waste collection calendar and nursery or school places. Students who take up their main residence in Fulda for the first time in 2026 can apply for the Studenteneuro of 100 euros. Then there is the choice between the core town, new residential areas such as Fulda-Galerie and the village-like districts. This guide sums it all up compactly.

Paperwork and deadlines

Registration at the citizens' office in the City Palace has a deadline: two weeks after moving in. Keep your ID and the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung) to hand and book an appointment early. Your bank, insurers and employer also need your new address in Fulda.

Flat and neighbourhood

Take a look at your future neighbourhood – whether the core town, Aschenberg or Fulda-Galerie – once at rush hour, and clarify the floor, lift and access. We also need these details for the fixed price of your move to Fulda.

Organising everyday life

The town buses depart from the bus station at the City Palace, and regional buses from the ZOB at the railway station. Apply for the resident parking permit online or in the City Palace. Ask the City of Fulda early about nursery and school places.

The citizens' office of the City of Fulda is in the City Palace, Schlossstraße 1 (entrance A), 36037 Fulda. According to the city, matters at the citizens' office can only be dealt with by prior appointment; you book appointments via the city's online tool. You can also drop off and collect documents at the information desk at the entrance without an appointment. The city also lists electronic residence registration among the registration services.

Opening hours according to the city: Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays 8 am to 6 pm, Wednesdays 8 am to 12 noon, Fridays 8 am to 3 pm and Saturdays 9 am to 12 noon. It contains the name and address of the landlord, the moving-in date, the address of the flat and the names of the persons required to register. On moving day, also plan a parking restriction zone if the removal van is to stand close to the front door. Further information can be found on our page Moving in Fulda.

Living in Fulda: Rent Index, Resident Parking Permit and Studenteneuro

For rents, Fulda has a qualified rent index. According to the city, the current version comes into force on 1 January 2026 and applies until 31 December 2027. It covers non-price-controlled rented flats and rented houses with 25 to 150 m² of living space and states the monthly net rent excluding heating in euros per square metre, without service charges. The brochure is available free of charge as a PDF, and in print at the citizens' office for 3 euros; the city also offers an online rent index calculator. Send questions to [email protected].

The city issues resident parking permits on application, one per person for a vehicle registered to them or in their permanent use. The requirement is a main residence in the resident parking area. According to the city, one year costs 120, 90 or 60 euros depending on the tariff zone; you can apply online or in person at the City Palace (room B 207, [email protected]).

Students receive the Studenteneuro from the City of Fulda, a welcome payment of 100 euros. According to the city, those eligible are students who begin their studies in Fulda in 2026, take up their main residence in Fulda for the first time and are enrolled at, for example, Hochschule Fulda. Applications are made exclusively online and close on 31 December 2026. Suitable help for moving in can be found with our student move.
