Moving to Marburg: costs process & districts

From Berlin to Marburg
Moving to Marburg – a university town between the Lahn and the castle
Guide
A move to Marburg takes you to the eighth-largest city in Hesse: around 73,600 people live on both banks of the Lahn, many of them because of the Philipps University. The old town – called the “Oberstadt” (upper town) in Marburg – climbs the slope below the Landgrave's Castle, and several streets are closed at certain times. That is why we plan access, stopping area and carrying routes before moving day and quote the fixed price after the survey.
We come from Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and drive around 471 km via the A2, A39, A7 and A49; by lorry that takes about seven hours including breaks, and usually two days with loading and unloading. Whether it is an old building in the Oberstadt, a flat in Wehrda or a house in Cappel: we clarify floor and parking space in advance. The route is described under Moving Berlin – Marburg.

Your quote for Marburg – after a survey
See first, then calculate
What your move to Marburg costs depends on volume, floor, access and the roughly 471 km route. We look at your household goods – at your home in Berlin or by video – and then quote a written fixed price, whether the destination is in the Oberstadt or in Wehrda.
Offers available individually, depending on effort, scheduling and the scope of services required.

Our part in your move to Marburg
From Moabit to Marburg
We have no branch in Marburg; instead we come by lorry from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21). That is why we ask about access, floor and stairwell in advance – whether it is a flat in the Oberstadt or a house in Wehrda. In Marburg you first need the road traffic authority's permit for the stopping area; the signs are then lent out by the city's services department (Dienstleistungsbetrieb) – we plan the process with you. We quote the fixed price after the survey; we are liable for your belongings under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre, and additional insurance is available. Places with their own pages are listed under Locations.

Your
move, our craft
A move to Marburg has its own peculiarities: steep lanes in the Oberstadt with restricted access times, a permit for the stopping area and signs from the city's services department, plus the start of semester at the Philipps University. This guide presents the town – the Oberstadt, Weidenhausen, the Südviertel, the large districts of Marbach, Wehrda and Cappel incorporated in 1974, and the Lahnberge – and explains registration, costs and the route.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Marburg
The Oberstadt, the Lahn valley and the outer districts at a glance
The historic core lies below the Landgrave's Castle: the Oberstadt climbs the Marburger Rücken ridge, with St Elizabeth's Church and the Old University nearby. On the other side of the Lahn lies the bridge suburb of Weidenhausen, a former tanners' village. To the east rise the Lahnberge hills, on whose heights the university hospital and several institutes are located.
In 1974 the large districts of Marbach, Wehrda in the north and Cappel in the south were incorporated; the built-up area stretches around nine kilometres from north to south. The city lists 25 districts in total, including Richtsberg, Ockershausen and the Südviertel. For the move, the address is what counts – a steep lane needs different planning from a house in Cappel. Our home move service adapts to this.
University, castle and the Lahn: who moves to Marburg
Marburg is a university town and the district town of the Marburg-Biedenkopf district. The Philipps University shapes the town, and demand for small flats is high at the start of semester. The urban area extends on both sides of the Lahn, west into the Gladenbach Uplands and east over the Lahnberge. We do not quote specific rents – they depend heavily on location and condition.
If you are arriving for the semester, you should fix the moving date early so that the permit, signs and registration at the Stadtbüro fit into the first two weeks. According to the city, registration is free of charge. Everything on routes from Berlin is under Long-distance moves.
How we calculate your moving price
Every move is different, but the following prices serve as a guide: a 1-room flat costs from €359, a 2-room flat from €589, a 3-room flat from €915 and a 4-room flat from €1,344. Larger properties such as a house or villa receive an individual quote. For long-distance moves a rate from €3.80/km applies. The quickest way is a free survey.
These factors determine your moving price
- Distance: from €3.80/km
- Total volume of your belongings
- Floor without a lift
- Need for a parking restriction zone
Additional options: furniture assembly, part load.

Moving to Marburg: Oberstadt access, signs and permit
Marburg's Oberstadt has closed streets. The city of Marburg gives these times for the Oberstadt badge (Oberstadtplakette): Sunday to Friday 11:00 to 18:00 and 20:00 to 06:00, Saturdays 10:00 to 18:00 and 20:00 to 06:00. Closed streets include the Markt, Marktgasse, Barfüßerstraße (nos. 12 to 55) and Wendelgasse. According to the city, exemptions include taxis and scheduled buses. According to the city, the badge is issued to people with their main residence in Marburg who are the registered keepers of the vehicle; it costs 18.00 euros and is valid per calendar year. The page says nothing about moves as such, so clarify access for the removal van directly with the traffic authority.
For the stopping area on moving day:
- The city of Marburg's services department (DBM, Am Krekel 55) lends out signs; according to the city, this allows stopping areas to be kept free for transport vehicles.
- The road traffic authority's permit must be in place beforehand. The responsible office is Fachdienst 33, Schubertstraße 8b, phone 06421 201-3300.
- Ask the Fachdienst about the lead time and costs for the permit as early as possible.
For furniture on steep paths, an external lift can be useful, see Furniture lift: process, costs and tips. We plan access together with you; more under Parking restriction zone.
Marburg: registration at the Stadtbüro, bulky waste and the start of semester
According to the city, the university town of Marburg has 25 districts, including Wehrda, Cappel, Marbach, Richtsberg, Ockershausen and the Südviertel. The same registration obligation applies to all of them: you have two weeks after moving in. Registration takes place at the Stadtbüro, Frauenbergstraße 31. The city lists walk-in hours on Wednesdays 08:00 to 12:00 and Fridays 07:30 to 12:00; appointments can be booked online. Bring your ID and the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung); registration is free of charge. Online registration works with an activated online ID function and a BundID account. Since 2022 the neighbourhood management office has been based in the Cappel district, and Wehrda has the Hallenbad Wehrda indoor pool.
According to the city, you generally request bulky waste collection via the online form. Small quantities are accepted at the DBM service yard at Am Krekel 17 to 21, and larger quantities at the Marburg-Biedenkopf waste disposal centre, Siemensstr. 5, for a fee. Questions are answered by Fachdienst 69 (06421 201-6999, Mon to Thu 10 am to 12 noon) or the public utilities' waste service office (06421 205850, Mon to Fri 9 am to 5 pm). More on the topic: Disposing of bulky waste properly.
