Your questions about moving in Marburg
The costs depend on flat size, floor and accessibility. A 2-room flat usually costs from €589, a 3-room flat from €909. For an exact quote we recommend a free survey or video consultation.
Moving in Marburg: how it works between the Oberstadt and the Lahn valley
A move in Marburg depends heavily on the location of the university city on the Lahn. The city extends on both sides of the river: in the west, the old town, called the “Oberstadt” in Marburg, climbs the slope up to the Landgrave's Castle; in the east lie the Lahnberge with the university hospital. The Oberstadt around the market square and the castle is characterised by narrow, steep lanes and steps, and many routes are barely passable for large removal vans. There we plan smaller vehicles and short carrying distances and carry furniture safely over the steps.
In the Lahn valley and the residential neighbourhoods things look different: wider streets, more parking, better access. Because our team travels from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21), we ask about the differences between the neighbourhoods in advance and adapt the vehicle size, staffing and schedule accordingly.
A private move in Marburg begins with a free survey by video or by arrangement and a fixed-price quote. On moving day we take care of packing, furniture transport, dismantling and assembly and, on request, the final cleaning of the old flat.
On connections: Marburg is not directly on a motorway. The B3 runs as an urban expressway through the city and as a four-lane road to the Gießener Ring (A485) and on into the Rhine-Main area; there is also the B62. It is around 471 road kilometres to our base in Berlin.
Whether a private move, office move or student move – we plan every move in Marburg so that waiting times, parking problems and hurdles such as the Oberstadt's restricted hours are taken into account early.
Inner city and 18 outer districts: residential areas in Marburg
Marburg consists of the inner city and 18 outer districts that were independent until they were incorporated in the 1970s. Building structure and access differ considerably, so we clarify every address in advance.
- Oberstadt (old town): historic centre below the castle with narrow lanes, half-timbering and restricted hours for traffic – small vehicles and short carrying distances count here.
- Weidenhausen: former tanners' village on the other side of the Lahn, also with an old-town character.
- Richtsberg: new housing area approved in 1963 for around 9,000 residents on the western slope of the Lahnberge.
- Cappel: large district in the south, into which the built-up urban area merges seamlessly.
- Wehrda: large district in the north, incorporated in 1974.
- Marbach: district in the northern west, site of the former Behringwerke.
- Ockershausen: incorporated in 1931, today practically part of the inner city.
- Elnhausen, Michelbach, Ginseldorf, Moischt, Schröck and Bortshausen: village-like outer districts, for which we check manoeuvring space and vehicle size in advance.
Depending on the district, a parking restriction zone is more or less important: in the Oberstadt and the city centre, public parking is scarce. In the village-like outer districts there is more often space in front of the house, so loading can often take place right outside the door.
Because our team at Praktik Transport und Umzüge travels from Berlin, please give us the district and street when you enquire. We then plan the vehicle, staffing and time window accordingly – whether in the Oberstadt, on the Richtsberg or in an outer district on the edge of town.
Moving costs in Marburg: transparently calculated prices
The costs of a move in Marburg depend on several factors: flat size, floor, distance, accessibility and the additional services required, such as packing service or furniture assembly. So that you can plan early, we give you a realistic overview of the usual price ranges.
| Type of move | Price from |
|---|---|
| 1-room flat | from €344 |
| 2-room flat | from €589 |
| 3-room flat | from €909 |
| Long-distance move (per km) | from €3.85/km |
| Parking restriction zone (per day) | €30–100 |
These guide prices apply to moves within Marburg and to the nearby surrounding area such as Cölbe, Lahntal or towards Gießen. Additional cost factors can be narrow access in the Oberstadt, missing lifts in older buildings or a particularly large household.
For a binding and transparent calculation we recommend a free survey by video or by arrangement. On this basis we prepare a fixed-price quote with no hidden costs. For students we also offer special student move packages on particularly favourable terms, as many flats are unfurnished and have a modest amount of household goods.
Part loads are also a low-cost alternative for smaller moves or transporting single pieces of furniture, especially for students or commuters who only want to transport a few items from or to Marburg. Contact us for an individual, non-binding quote – we calculate fairly and without surprises.
Parking restriction zone in Marburg: permit, signs and parking
Anyone moving in Marburg knows the problem: in the Oberstadt around the market square, parking is scarce, the lanes are narrow and closed to traffic at certain times. In densely built neighbourhoods of the city centre or near Philipps University, free parking is also hard to find on moving day. To avoid delays, parking tickets and risky manoeuvring, an official parking restriction zone directly outside the flat is often the best solution.
The procedure is clearly regulated in Marburg: according to the city, the permit is issued by department 33 – road traffic (Fachdienst 33 – Straßenverkehr). The parking ban signs are lent by the Dienstleistungsbetrieb Marburg (DBM); you may only collect them once the permit has been granted. A reserved area shortens carrying distances considerably – a big advantage in the narrow streets of the Oberstadt.
Our price list states €30 to €100 per day for a parking restriction zone, depending on location, duration and effort; the municipal fees for the permit are added and should be checked with the department. Apply early so that the permit, signs and moving date fit together and residents can prepare in good time.
In addition to the parking ban, we take other special features into account: the restricted hours in the Oberstadt, the low-emission zone in large parts of the inner city and roadworks that can restrict access. We plan the route and loading space with you in advance so that moving day runs in a structured way. This saves you time, stress and unnecessary costs – and your move in Marburg is orderly from the start.
From Marburg to Gießen, Frankfurt – or Berlin
In addition to moves within the city, we also handle moves from Marburg to other cities and federal states. Via the four-lane B3 you reach the Gießener Ring (A485) and the A5, plus the B62, B252 and B255. It is around 471 road kilometres to our base on Stromstraße in Berlin-Moabit, mainly via the A49, A7, A39 and A2.
We also handle moves within Hesse, for example to:
- Gießen – down the Lahn via the B3
- Frankfurt am Main, Offenbach am Main and Hanau – into the Rhine-Main area
- Wiesbaden and Darmstadt – the state capital and South Hesse
- Kassel and Fulda – North and East Hesse
According to our price list, we calculate long-distance moves from €3.85 per kilometre, depending on volume and additional services; the fixed price after a survey is binding. For smaller volumes or single pieces of furniture we offer an affordable part load, where your goods travel with other jobs on the same route. We plan the route, loading times and breaks in advance so that your move arrives within the agreed time window – within Hesse or to another federal state.

This gives you a moving service that is plannable and reliable.
Office and company moves in Marburg: plannable between the Oberstadt and Marbach
Marburg is not only an important university city but also home to numerous companies, practices, law firms and research institutions – from the pharmaceutical firms that emerged from the former Behringwerke to small businesses around Philipps University. A company move in Marburg therefore requires particular care so that ongoing business is affected as little as possible.
Our business relocation service covers complete planning and execution: from dismantling and transporting office furniture and securely packing sensitive documents to the professional assembly and dismantling of IT infrastructure, server cabinets and workstations. Where possible we work outside core working hours or at the weekend to minimise lost working time.
Particular challenges arise in Marburg's city centre and Oberstadt, where many law firms, medical practices and smaller offices are housed in historic buildings with narrow access and limited lift access. Here we plan more compact vehicles and enough porters to keep transport times short. At sites with wider access, for example in Marbach or on the Lahnberge, a larger team can work quickly.
For companies with several sites in Hesse we also offer coordinated moves between Marburg and cities such as Gießen or Frankfurt am Main. In advance we draw up a detailed schedule, including labelling, inventory and reassembly at the new site, so that your team can get back to work as quickly as possible.
Student moves in Marburg: process and easy booking
More than 21,000 people study at Philipps University Marburg; it is the city's most important economic factor. At the change of semester in October and April, many students move within Marburg, for example from the Richtsberg to a shared flat in the Oberstadt or from Ockershausen to the Südviertel. Our student move service is tailored precisely to these needs: quick, straightforward and budget-conscious.
As students often plan over shorter periods and move on a limited budget, we offer compact moving packages with dates by arrangement, including at weekends. For smaller volumes our part load is also a good option, where boxes and single pieces of furniture are transported together with other jobs.
The process and booking are very simple:
- Send an enquiry: by phone, email or online form you tell us the moving date, flat size and floor.
- Receive a quote: we calculate transparently and give you a fixed price, with no hidden costs.
- Confirm the date: once you agree, we reserve the vehicle and team for your preferred date.
- Carry out the move: on the day itself our team travels from Berlin and takes care of transport, assembly and dismantling and, on request, packing and final cleaning.
This clear process also applies to larger households, senior citizens or companies – only the scope and additional services vary. This way every move in Marburg, whether a student flat share or a family home, is handled in a structured, reliable way and without unpleasant surprises.
Parking bans in Marburg: road traffic department and signs from the DBM
Anyone in Marburg who needs space at the roadside for the removal van needs a permit from the road traffic authority. According to the city of Marburg, department 33 – road traffic (Fachdienst 33 – Straßenverkehr) is responsible for restrictions on public traffic areas. It is located at Schubertstraße 8b, 35043 Marburg, telephone 06421 201-3300, email [email protected]. The city gives its office hours as Mondays and Wednesdays 8 am to 12 noon, Thursdays 3 pm to 5 pm and by appointment.
According to the city, you can borrow the signs from the Dienstleistungsbetrieb Marburg (DBM). The page on signage states that this allows stopping areas for transport vehicles to be kept free before moves. Collection is at Am Krekel 55, 35039 Marburg, in the administrative building of the municipal utilities (Stadtwerke). Important: the road traffic authority's permit must be in place before collecting the signs.
The city points out that fees are charged for the permit and, where applicable, for ordering traffic control measures. The page does not give amounts, so ask the department directly. If traffic is affected, a traffic sign plan is usually required. It is best to clarify by phone which documents are needed for your street.
You can read how we plan moves in Marburg overall in our Marburg guide. The parking restriction zone page also offers general information.
Marburg's Oberstadt, districts and registration when moving
An access regulation applies in Marburg's Oberstadt. According to the city, Markt, Marktgasse, Schuhmarkt, Wendelgasse, Steingasse, Rübenstein and Schneidersberg, among others, are closed to traffic from Sunday to Friday from 11 am to 6 pm and from 8 pm to 6 am, and on Saturdays from 10 am to 6 pm and from 8 pm to 6 am. According to the city, severely disabled people with a parking permit, taxis and scheduled buses are exempt. Removal vehicles are not mentioned in this list. Clarify access in advance with the road traffic authority (06421 201-3323). Residents can apply for an Oberstadt badge (Oberstadtplakette); a new one costs €18.00.
On its website the city lists 25 districts, including the Altstadt, Campusviertel, Südviertel, Ockershausen, Richtsberg, Wehrda and Cappel. Give us the exact district and street when you enquire so that we can plan the journey and carrying distances.
According to the city of Marburg, after moving in you must register within two weeks. The city office (Stadtbüro) at Frauenbergstraße 31 does this free of charge; book appointments online via termine-reservieren.de/termine/marburg/. You must bring your ID and the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung).
For bulky waste the city uses online registration, and the municipal utilities run the waste service office (telephone 06421 205850). Small quantities from a car boot are accepted by the DBM service yard at Am Krekel 17-21.
